Back to O'Neil..really looking forward to seeing what he does with the D. Hoping he's one of those younger, up-and-coming bright D minds who can really scheme vs. particular opponents, utilize the personnel well, etc.
I think the team is going to use a cover 1, press, man under base. It's agressive and a lot rides on the guy who calls the plays to have a good idea of what the other team is trying to do.
Who is the team's cover 1deep safety? Reid is a solid player, but does he have the range to cover that much ground?
The bold is a very good question - if they do play Ward more at S as Baalke alluded recently then I would definitely say Ward. When Ward's covering the slot or if they play him some outside at CB, in this case maybe it has to be Reid.
If you have Ward and Reid in the game as safeties, and one guy is moving to man coverage against the slot or tight end, that guy would probably be ward, putting Reid as the 1 deep safety.
Having Tartt in the game gives the 49ers a little more unpredictability, as he can move into the box and play man coverage adequately. Reid is better playing deep in a zone. Im not sure if Tartt has the range to play cover 1 deep safety. Ward probably does, and all three can play two deep safety well.
If Ward can play man cover corner well, he could bring a lot of flexibility to the back end of the defense. Assuming he plays cover 1,2, and 3 in zone well at deep safety.
