1) Kap: Not much to say. Abbreviated performance. Nice little pass to Boldin, missed Torrey deep, threw third pass away with nobody open. On the QBs in general, it was nice to see Gabbert be competent....and we need another #3 QB. Thomspon was awful. 2) Torrey Smith: THIS JUST IN - He's Fast. Man it was really nice if even for one play to see a guy with Jets like that running through the other teams secondary. Still a work in progress to get their timing right...but that was REALLY nice to see. 3) Hyde: Only 2 carries, but I liked what I saw in Hyde. I was there for the SBL Holder event and he was the best player on the field. Spinning, hitting the hole quickly, cutting back on those new stretch run plays. If he stays healthy I think he could be in for a big year. 4) Hayne: OK peeps...lets slow down a bit. :) He looked good, but he had a HUGE hole to run through on that 53 yarder. He still runs WAY too upright. He did look good in the open field though and I liked the way he fielded the kicks and made defenders miss. I think he has a future as a kick returner, but he's still got a LONG way to go as a RB. 5) Mike Davis: Limited opportunities, but his similarities to Garrison Hearst don't end at his jersey number. GREAT body lean and quickness for a man his size. Looking forward to seeing more of him. 6) Jaquiski Tartt: Really liked what I saw. Still a young, raw player but he really flashed a few times. So did McCray for that matter. Safety is a position of strength and I think Dahls time may be done in SF. 7) Arik Armstead and rest of D-Line: Pretty much echo everything Tomsula said. Some real good (pancake of an O-Lineman), some good (recognized the screen but held the guy), and some bad (got pushed clear out of the play at times). I was reading some tweets of people talking to John Middlekoff and they were talking about how disappointed they were on how slow he looked and how he didn't get a big rush. Um...he's a 3-4 end. I think some people are looking for Derrick Thomas when they should be looking for Ray McDonald. He's a work in progress, but we always knew that. He'll never be a 15 sack guy but we already knew that. As for the rest of the line, Purcell really stood out but almost all of them played very well. Tank was a bit invisible, but Lawrence Okoye looks like an NFL player. That's a HUGE step up from the last few years. Tons of depth here. D-Line might be best unit on the team. 8) 400 yards: The D gave up 400 yards...but lets be real here for a sec. Manginis defense will be far different than Fangios. I'm not saying better...only saying different. They will NEVER play CLOSE to as vanilla as they did Saturday Night. No scheming, very few blitzes. THAT. WILL. CHANGE. Whether that's for the better or worse...we'll just have to see. 9) O-Line: Really hard to make any judgment, although the first string line held up better than expected. Then again, Watt and Wilfork didn't play. Still, Kap had all day on the deep pass to Torrey. The line seemed to move really well on those stretch runs. The line struggled late and Thomson didn't do them any favors, but I was pleasantly surprised by the "starting" line. 10) One game down: After watching one game, I'm intrigued by a few guys, but more than any season I can remember I still have really no idea what to expect this year. It does make the preseason more enjoyable than normal though. :)

For three years the offense avg around 24 ppg. Right up until the blowout to Denver. After that they avg. about 17 ppg.

In the 8 losses the team turned the ball over 15 times. In the 8 wins only 7 turnovers. That's not a coaches fault. The musical OL didn't help. The injuries didn't help. Players not playing smart. Sure the coaches are somewhat to blame. Using the excuse that the HC is why we didn't have a good season last year is just silly.

Just tired of all the excuses. Just go out and play football.

Is this making excuses or analyzing performance? I'm not sure who's being excused here. All I can say is that I was deeply disappointed in the development of the offense under Harbaugh. It was excruciating to hear Niner players talk about how NFC West defenses were calling out the plays before the snap. It was frustrating for me to see young talent overlooked on game day over and over.

As far as Harbaugh is concerned, when I read that he started negotiating with Michigan a day after they fired their previous coach and was in talks with them for more than a month before the season was over, all the gloss I saw on him started to dissipate. I get that he felt he wasn't supported by the FO, but at the same time, he gave up on the team for the last 6 weeks that he was still collecting a hefty pay check. Now, he's got a private jet, a $48 mil contract, a special luxury bus wrapped with his signature khaki and blue and no questions asked. Considering all of that, it's surprising to me that fans are still treating him like he was the greatest thing that ever happened to the team.

Jed fired him after the hawks game. It was all called a mutual parting because if Jed fired Jim he would owe him his last year. If MI hired Jim away they would owe the 49ers money. They both agreed to not tell the entire story to the media, not worry about the money and part ways.

If Jim wanted to be that kind of guy he could have said f this team and walked out and said give me my last years pay.

Well, that's what I thought. But when it became clear that he already knew he was getting a special, tax-sheltered $48 million deal complete with his own private jet and luxury bus, it took a little of the gloss off of that as well. It's probably pretty easy to say 'keep your money' when you've got a guaranteed $48 mil over the next 6 years and you know you're going to be treated like the second coming.

Even if Joecool can already tell based on the TE's leading the team in catches after one preseason game that our new coaches are better than him.

SoCold, if you didn't notice the change in coaching overall, timely plays, passing to release valves , new OL ZBS, no wacky, stupid, ridiculous and embarrassing sideline antics...not to mention the playcalling...then you aren't looking at the same game the rest of us saw. True the DBs and LBs had trouble in coverage, but basically, virtually all other questions were answered, incl DL with goal line stand. To have but one question mark when there were 8 prior to gametime, is a major league leap for us. Oh, and somehow, JT et al got Blaine coached up where he is now a bona fide #2...which was a huge question mark. Playcalling helped, no doubt. The former guy here...well HaRo just didn't know O....except for the Bo schembechler 3 yds and a cloud of astroturf.

If the defense is completely inept with players making the same mistakes over and over, a complete lack of discipline and an inability to get lined up in time that never gets fixed; Absolutely.

who said that? I saw some good things in that game. I'm not ready to say how good we are yet.

Nothing has been "confirmed" after one pre season game. Bringing up the old coaches in comparison after one pre season game? People say our Defense looked bad but want to use the excuse we didn't game plan to stop them. Then want to say our offense looked great because we ran vanilla plays? I just find it kind of silly to put so much depth into one pre season game.

You might bring up what a guy said who doesn't post often, but i doubt the main guys are saying exactly what you are saying.

Getting the plays in super fast, the plays used to get Gabbert going..stuff that coach previously couldn't get better at.

This times two! Everyone is bemoaning the loss of Aldon, but what has he really done for this team the past couple of seasons except be one big fail? He hasn't been an asset for 2 years now, so other than the potential of returning to his old form, as formidable as he was, the operative word is "WAS"! Our D did fantastic without any meaningful contribution from him, so again, was this loss really that devastating? Not to mention he wouldn't have Justin working alongside and taking some heat off him, and if I recall, those few games when he didn't, he wasn't so scintillating. So really? A big blow? Only if he reached the level of the former Aldon. He obviously continues to have major issues, and would likely been more of a liability, or at least distraction, so I, for one, can't bring myself to miss him all that much. Now, if he cleans up his act and returns to terrorize the league, and worse, the 9'ers, that would be a whole different story. Frankly, I think he should enter a program, graduate with flying colors and return to the team with an incentive-laden contract to prove himself. He owes this team and should act accordingly.
