1) Kap: Not much to say. Abbreviated performance. Nice little pass to Boldin, missed Torrey deep, threw third pass away with nobody open. On the QBs in general, it was nice to see Gabbert be competent....and we need another #3 QB. Thomspon was awful. 2) Torrey Smith: THIS JUST IN - He's Fast. Man it was really nice if even for one play to see a guy with Jets like that running through the other teams secondary. Still a work in progress to get their timing right...but that was REALLY nice to see. 3) Hyde: Only 2 carries, but I liked what I saw in Hyde. I was there for the SBL Holder event and he was the best player on the field. Spinning, hitting the hole quickly, cutting back on those new stretch run plays. If he stays healthy I think he could be in for a big year. 4) Hayne: OK peeps...lets slow down a bit. :) He looked good, but he had a HUGE hole to run through on that 53 yarder. He still runs WAY too upright. He did look good in the open field though and I liked the way he fielded the kicks and made defenders miss. I think he has a future as a kick returner, but he's still got a LONG way to go as a RB. 5) Mike Davis: Limited opportunities, but his similarities to Garrison Hearst don't end at his jersey number. GREAT body lean and quickness for a man his size. Looking forward to seeing more of him. 6) Jaquiski Tartt: Really liked what I saw. Still a young, raw player but he really flashed a few times. So did McCray for that matter. Safety is a position of strength and I think Dahls time may be done in SF. 7) Arik Armstead and rest of D-Line: Pretty much echo everything Tomsula said. Some real good (pancake of an O-Lineman), some good (recognized the screen but held the guy), and some bad (got pushed clear out of the play at times). I was reading some tweets of people talking to John Middlekoff and they were talking about how disappointed they were on how slow he looked and how he didn't get a big rush. Um...he's a 3-4 end. I think some people are looking for Derrick Thomas when they should be looking for Ray McDonald. He's a work in progress, but we always knew that. He'll never be a 15 sack guy but we already knew that. As for the rest of the line, Purcell really stood out but almost all of them played very well. Tank was a bit invisible, but Lawrence Okoye looks like an NFL player. That's a HUGE step up from the last few years. Tons of depth here. D-Line might be best unit on the team. 8) 400 yards: The D gave up 400 yards...but lets be real here for a sec. Manginis defense will be far different than Fangios. I'm not saying better...only saying different. They will NEVER play CLOSE to as vanilla as they did Saturday Night. No scheming, very few blitzes. THAT. WILL. CHANGE. Whether that's for the better or worse...we'll just have to see. 9) O-Line: Really hard to make any judgment, although the first string line held up better than expected. Then again, Watt and Wilfork didn't play. Still, Kap had all day on the deep pass to Torrey. The line seemed to move really well on those stretch runs. The line struggled late and Thomson didn't do them any favors, but I was pleasantly surprised by the "starting" line. 10) One game down: After watching one game, I'm intrigued by a few guys, but more than any season I can remember I still have really no idea what to expect this year. It does make the preseason more enjoyable than normal though. :)

The Good:

Geep Chryst!!! He confirmed what a lot of people on the outside looking in who were wondering. We were always wondering WTF is Harbaugh doing with the offense? Are the weapons weaker than we think? Why is the passing game so basic? Thank you, Geep!! Thank you for applying fundamental concepts of how to use talent on the team.
Mike Davis! This guy looks good. Haven't seen a lot from Hyde yet but Davis appears to have some nice running ability. Do agree with one poster that he does run like Hearst.
Torrey Smith! I am more impressed with his last 2 or 3 steps in that overthrow than the fact that he got behind the defense. That overthrow appeared as if it was going to be off by over 5 yards but Smith's last few steps to try to run underneath the ball raised my eyebrows. It's like he put another quick gear on.
OL: offensive line was much better than I thought. Kap was getting ample time back there and so was Gabbert. Still need to see a little more but I think the zone blocking scheme for the run plays is what's making it easier to call the plays. Essentially, the OL has the same assignments be it run or pass since all they do if find a guy to block in their zone. Will be interesting how they react to a D coach that will try to flood one blocker.
Hayne! Don't jump on me too much about this but there's only one other big NFL player who has the quick feet that Hayne showed for a 220 lb runner. Great change of direction. This other player also runs upright. Don't jump on me about this as I am not comparing the success. I'm only comparing the style, explosion and control. Adrian Peterson.
TightEnds: Has always been my belief that TE's don't need to be crazy talented in order to help move the chains. If WR's around them are taking attention along with the running game, it is a very simple task to get TE's involved to help move the chains. This goes back to #1 in this list.
Defensive Line: Fellas, I'm more worried about Mangini's complicated fronts because I don't think we need it. We are very strong up front. Eli Harold also showed some ability when rushing the passer. Our Tackles and Ends are extremely strong. However, this is still a work in progress on a couple of spots but definitely not a lack of talent.
LB's: Worried about the inside linebackers the most. There's some talent but we don't have that all-in-one guy next to Bowman. We need someone to separate themselves. If that doesn't happen, look for teams to pick on us at that spot.
DB's: Not worried about the DB's at all simply because of the talent we have stacked up here. Didn't shine Saturday but you can see the talent stand out on the screen.

Yeah I have the same worry about the ILB's too. And frankly it was a worry of mines during the draft, and why I was a little upset we didnt address this spot in the draft. Baalke is counting HEAVILY on Bowman returing to form. But if the other ILB's on the roster aren't up to the task teams will be able to attack our D at that position. Bowman cannot make all the tackles and cover all the TE's. I hope all the talk about Moody is true and Wilhoite is healthy (not a big fan of Wilhoite though).

I also think we might feature this formation this year:

I know we've used it in the past, but we also used this form with kap in the pistol last game as well. I like both versions especially the pistol version because it's gives kap a little more time, still allows down hill running and keeps to possibility open to use any read opt stuff. Personally I'm going to be on the lookout for this form and the ways we use it.

There were 13 total completions in the game. I like how the backup QB's completed 7 of those to the 3rd, 4th and 5th string TE's. Should prob put our coaches right into the HOF for calling those plays.

With the blocking scheme we are applying on running plays, defenses are forced to be ready to stretch out. We will see some very nice PA bootlegs out of our offense.

What's your point? Starters only played one series. You can still see schemes and concepts used even with backup personnel. Also, Who said anything about putting any one in the HOF?

That's what I'm hoping for. I think kap could be absolutely deadly on play passes off of the stretch And accompanying boots.

Harbaugh overrated as offensive coach, but not sure criticizing him for his use of the TE is the way to do it. It might actually be his strong suit.

I think people place far too much blame on just Harbaugh. It was a snow ball effect that didn't help the offense last year.
For three years the offense avg around 24 ppg. Right up until the blowout to Denver. After that they avg. about 17 ppg.

In the 8 losses the team turned the ball over 15 times. In the 8 wins only 7 turnovers. That's not a coaches fault. The musical OL didn't help. The injuries didn't help. Players not playing smart. Sure the coaches are somewhat to blame. Using the excuse that the HC is why we didn't have a good season last year is just silly.

Just tired of all the excuses. Just go out and play football.
