Who was the 9ers' biggest loss this offseason?

Cowboy, not so much, but Willis, Borland and AD. What in the world...?

Very odd off-season to say the least. I've never seen a mass exodus like this. Usually when you lose this much talent its preceded by salary cap problems. Our guys just flat out walked away from the game in the prime of their careers. Weirdest off-season ever, but it might be a growing trend in the league to see guys retire before they completely ruin their bodies.

Fine with me, but lets just hope the retirement bug starts hitting every team in the league and not just the Niners. It sure would be nice if Marshawn and Russell decided to retire in the next month or two... On second thought, Marshawn wanted to, but Seattles GM is ruthless.

As much as I love Gore and Willis, I trust Baalke to replace them. Baalke has drafted Bowman and Borland in the last several years and it seems Wilhoite is underrated by our fans. Frank is my favorite niner ever, but he's old and I like Hyde. Bush catching passes will be a nice wrinkle.

Anthony Davis was a young, good tackle. He struggled with speed rushers but when he was at full force he was awesome. His head wasn't in it so I can't say he's our biggest loss. I thought about picking him.

Justin Smith retiring wasn't a huge shock. He was the oldest of our departures, so it kills me to say this but I think he's our biggest loss. I love what I've seen from Dial and Tank but cowboy made our defense tick- I just pray one of our younger guys can develop similar traits to him. Okoye maybe? The way Justin would dominate running lanes and seal defenders for Aldon probably made other players look better than they are.

Hopefully the hiring of Tomsula helps us post cowboy. He will be loved if we can still dominate up front.

You guys don't even know why you would bring him back
Davis doesn't want to play this year or maybe any year. Patrick was a shock but he's been missing games the last few years and the team will adapt. Cowboy played as long as he could. Borland, now here's a young guy who played with abandon, his youth and skill set makes him the choice.
AD because we got noooooooooobody behind him that plays near his level.

The rest of the list are players that I'm happy to see let go, or players that have a quality backups waiting for their chance, or both in Crabtree' case.

I do know why I would bring him back. And if I did, I know who the players to get rid off. The ones that under performed and pointed fingers.

AD would be mine too. AD's game only had one inconsistency (speed rushers from time to time - Borland would be #2 b/c of his youth and upside in this defense while also recognizing he had a long ways to go in pass coverage). Now granted, there was no way in hell Davis was going to come into camp, hit the cardio, start a diet program and work his ass off to become a top-notch ZBS RT but the the fact that he was young, already paid for, and that the FO didn't know he was going to quit, this is really the only potential drop-off in actual talent and production on the field. From Davis to either Boone (hopefully) or Pears? That has potential to be an actual drop off in talent. Now, perhaps Boone and Pears are best suited for a ZBS and excel there (extra motivation for Boone at T to earn T money). If so, it may not be as huge of a loss in talent/production compared to Davis 2 years ago at his peak in a power run scheme where teams hadn't figured us out yet. But the potential for a drop off in talent is real...something to watch closely.

i am glad we got rid of a coach who undercoached last year and HAD to live by creating, generating or prolonging drama. i know he was just a innocent victim but just my opinion

This x 1000....
AD would be the player because his game really wasn't slipping like most of the guys on the list.

Gore, Patrick, Justin's best days are behind them.

Iupati's performance was slipping.

Craptree was never better than just above average.

Although both Cox and Culliver are good players - I think we'll see almost the same story as our other Dbacks who left after last season.

Borland could have been VERY special but the team wasn't impacted in a terrible way.

S Johnson - I thought he could have been a real difference maker. I was wrong!

I thought Skuta was the most under-estimated guy on the D. He flat out played and showed up time & time again.

I disagree with AD, he missed so many games that he didn't have much of an impact as a full time starter would. I think the biggest loss was either Patrick or Chris Borland. NO ONE saw those two coming. And don't underestimate Justin Smith's impact.
