Will $70 to $80 mill be enough to keep him if he has say 16 sacks this year??? I know Suh plays a different position but that could work in his favor too. Especially if Suh has a down year in Miami. Does anyone really think a team out there wouldn't be willing to give Aldon $100 mill plus if they have the cap room? This is all assuming they don't extend him sometime before FA starts and he has a great year. There is no way Aldon doesn't produce this year if he's on the field, I just don't see it. The difference between $70 or $80 mill and $100 isn't a few million your talking about, it's 20-30 more. I agree with a lot of the posters and think you HAVE to get a deal done before Week 1 of the regular season. I guess it also depends on Aldon and how he values the loyalty the team has shown him and what his agent and his close circle is whispering in his ear as well as the guaranteed money amount. 49ers most important player decision since the Kaep extension.

You can't look at Suh's contract they don't play the same position...Clay Matthews deal is more appropriate which was 5 yrs $66 million $20.5 guaranteed or Robert Quinn who got more guaranteed cash, but less years and looking at the end of that contract it would be a no-brainer to cut him based on cap hit vs dead money left....http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/st.-louis-rams/robert-quinn/

Here's a list of the 2015 cap-hit on the top OLBs http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/cap-hit/outside-linebacker/

Also there will be a couple other top end OLBs heading into FA (unless they get resigned as well, which would help in figuring out Smith's deal). Houston,Miller, and Kerrigan come to mind.

Also your throwing stuff out like $100 million dollar deal, but it all comes down to guaranteed cash (ex look at Kap's #s). All I've read is that Smith and his agent's goal is to resign with SF and agreeing to this restructured option this year only proves that...I see a mid-season extension happening SF wants to make sure he keeps his noise clean and they have every right to do that, and Aldon and his agent know that

Oh and they currently have $34 million in cap space (for 2016) and that's without taking Brooks off the payroll (save around $7 million)

I only throw out $100 mill because somebody at that position is going to want that deal. Or maybe somebody's agent. Maybe it's Houston who has been the most consistent over the last few years. Of course the first guy to sign will be the structure for the other guys. Whatever happens the most likely to collect or get reworked would be Aldon just because he's so young. I know guaranteed is all that matters if your cut but if he stays on the team it will all hit the cap at some point right? Suh's contract IMO is relevant just because he's a defender making QB money. I would like to see Aldon signed first because if Miller or Kerrigan who had a good year but is no where near as talented as Miller, Houston or Aldon signs first and gets way over paid it could potentially make it harder to sign Smith. I know Houston got franchised this year and I know Snyder is an idiot and will pay anything to a decent player (hopefully Mcluelesshan installs a salary structure) but I'm not sure of each teams salary cap structure. Definitely matters and it's interesting that the Broncos and Chiefs have waited so long to work extensions. Maybe Houston is asking to much and the Broncos are wary of Miller's recent run of injuries. Definitely will be interesting to see who signs first and for how much.

Yup, I threw out the other OLB FA names because they might hit FA and that would be more competition for Smith in the open market. I don't think he will get anything close to what Houston will get and he shouldn't.

I see something similar to Matthews, with incentives and off-field clauses....no way Baalke let's him leave if he's able to be on the field. I think there's mutual interest to get something done, they just don't want to get burned again.

Yeah I agree. I do like Aldon more and think he could be the better all around player..........if he was actually on the field. However 3 straight years of double digit sacks, including an amazing 22 last year with zero issues off the field so far, he is the premier OLB in the NFL right now. I think if Aldon stays clean and is on the field this year he takes that title. I guess Houston won't get his deal done until after the year. I mean if has signed his franchise tag can you still work an extension? Do you know? It seems like they wait until the end of the year. Von's had no issues either and bounced back from the knee surgery with 16 games and 14 sacks last year. If he gets extended do you think Aldon gets as much or more than Miller? I like Aldon better than Houston and a little more than Miller but because of Aldon's off field issues do you think Aldon will get a lesser offer than the other two? Granted there will be clauses but do you think he ultimately gets a deal between the two or just better than Matthews but not as good as Houston or Miller? I think these questions are why I agree that Aldon has to be extended before the season is over. To much money to throw around to three premium players if they all or only one hits FA.

We will see how ALdon does this season without Justin Smith infront of him (assuming he retires). Because in games where Justin did not play, Aldon was not as big a factor. If Aldon can get 10 sacks or more this year without legal troubles he will get paid.

I'm pretty sure you can talk to them about extensions while they are franchised until July 15th...I could be wrong, but after that date they must take that one-year deal and can't be extended until after the season.

Houston should make more money they all 3 based on being on the field and production. I think Miller and Smith both have gray areas and their teams know more than anyone else. In reality, I think Aldon will get less because he's basically missed a year of football due to off-field stuff.

I agree if they are gonna resign Smith it has to be before the 2015 season is over, I wouldn't be surprised if it happen around the bye week, by then they should know if he's grown up and ready to be a All-Pro.

I think it's silly that people keep bringing that up, Justin helped everyone, but if it was all him then why weren't Brooks or Skuta rocking out 15 + sacks a year??

Aldon was constantly bringing pressure...it's not always about sacks.

Always the voice of logic.

Throw on the tape, Aldon is a manimal. No doubt justin helps everyone, but to say justin can allow a guy to get 14+ sacks two years in a row is insane. Even when Aldon isnt getting the sack he is getting pressure and forcing qbs to move or throw the ball quicker then theyd like.

LOL well I mean it makes sense right

Aldon is monster and he MUST be resigned.
Maybe they can use some of Justin's money to extend Aldon. Get it done sooner rather than later Trent!!!
