The Patriots took a long snapper right after the 49ers made their pick. Lee himself was an early 6th round pick. Shane Lechler was a 5th round pick by Oakland, he was a dominant punter for them for over a decade. You're talking about a late 5th round pick where most of the guys drafted will be out of the league in a couple years anyways. I think people are making a really big fuss over something that just isn't a big deal.

Not my ideal pick, but not something to get super upset over either. If Pinion turns out to be a top notch punter, the pick was worth it, simple as that, people acting like this is comparable to the Jags taking a punter in the 3rd round and s**t.

Absolutely not! I get all that. I know we need a punter sooner or later (Andy has been nicked up often), but then why let that punter go last year (he was good)?

You're gonna sit here and tell me that Baalke isn't good at evaluating late talent (Dial/Lynch)? Of course not. That's why I'm uneasy with this pick. Don't you believe there was someone out there that can make an impact right away (someone that's going to be on the field more often than a punter)?

I feel that he would've been there in the 7th or even undrafted. Even if he wasn't, don't you think Baalke could've found a good one later? Idk, maybe one of the coaches has a man crush on this guy.

This has nothing to do with Pinion personally. He's ours now and I wish the best for the kid. I just don't get Baalke right now, that is all.
Trend 50% hate Baalke and the Yorks and 50% love them. really nothing has changed in the zone.

Neither did Brian Jennings, he still got cut because his salary was too high. Lee is a punter earning $3 million a year and escalating that I'm sure could be used in extending guys like Aldon....etc. If they think Pinion could be just as good, a late 5th rounder isn't a big price to pay in order to get more cap space.

But we aren't going to get a great feel for this guy after a few preseason games. We won't know anything until the bullets fly, and we can't go into the season with 2 guys on the roster dueling it out. Any other position and it's a full season battle...but to dump Lee for this guy

Well if he unseats Lee we save money and no one will ever return a kickoff on us again. Thats a good thing.

I think this draft is about getting future leaders and tone setters in place with the loss of Gore, Willis, and possibly Justin Smith. We don't have many leaders and high character guys left outside of Staley, Kap, Bowman. Vernon is probably gone in a year. Reid is one but his health is a concern. I like the idea, get a leadership group in place and then later on you can take risks.

I feel like the draft strategy this year is "let's draft to have the best special teams units next year!"

Haven't you heard? You win by having a good defense and special teams.

If Pinion beats out Lee, no I don't think there would be. I think you'd get a guy that was for depth purposes, that doesn't see the field as a rookie or ends up redshirted for a year.

Supposedly Pinion worked out for the special teams coach who really liked him, so maybe, this guy just might be a very good punter. If he isn't, its still a late 5th rounder, which is why I'm kind of like "meh." At that point in the draft you just hope they find a guy that can last more than a couple of seasons.

I think that by signing Dres Anderson as a UDFA, a guy who was expected to be a 4th or 5th rounder, they've certainly made up a bit for the pick. They added another vertical threat that might be able to stick on the roster or get red-shirted.

Well special teams kept us out of the SB in 11 and may have cost us a SB in 12 so yea.

Truth... and the kid does have a very strong leg!
Pinion said he hit a 65 yard filed goal just he other day, which would make him Jim Harbaugh's favorite player is he was still here. We could go for even more FG's

Well, I may be uneasy for a day, but I am not disappointed with the overall draft. I'm not exactly thrilled, but then again, we won't know who will surprise this year so, I'm looking forward (again) to watching guys develop...

Why not, teams do it all the time, with kickers, punters, long snappers.

Like if that kickoff hadn't gone to Jacoby Jones and instead had gone out of bounds for a touchback.....

LOL!!

This guy can compete with Dawson as well. I'm not certain, but didn't we have a guy like that last year (can punt and kick FGs)?

With the first pick in the 2016 NFL draft, the San Francisco 49ers select....

And before you call me a hater, I have been going to games since 1978.

We don't have the extra roster spot. After this, Lee might demand a trade and we could be stuck with crap. If we needed a punter I would be fine with this but it's been a position of strength for like 10 years. The field position game has always been set by Lee.
