Realistically though, why would you keep an expensive QB if there is a much cheaper option who you think could possibly beat out the expensive QB?


Translation: Kap = cut, draft a QB with our 1st pick and let the backup hold the fort.

I think managment wants to give Kap a chance to see if he can rebuild his career. They are likely on the hook for the doe anyway. Like Shady McCoy said yesterday, it doesn't matter who you are to CHIP. Everyone will get a chance to succeed or fail. There is no favoritism and it doesn't matter if your whole career has been a flop (aka Blaine Gabbert).

I think he should also get a chance but if you feel the backup can compete for the starting job, then why waste the money...especially if they are thinking about drafting a QB.

Well, if you really do have two good QBs, they are worth their weight in gold. So even if you dont keep them, you trade one for a small ransom. If it is as you say, and there is no material difference between Kap and Gabbert, obviously you cut/trade Kap. However, I doubt Gabbert will out perform Kap this season, but thats just my opinion. Prepare to witness the second coming of Lazarus.

That is my read of this situation, too, for now.

I don't know how much more "outwardly complimentary" Kelly could be than when he said Kap was an excellent QB. What else is he supposed to say? He can't talk specifics in a presser.

People who don't want Kap back will create falsehoods and misinterpretations with any quote that doesn't say "Kap is 100% our starting QB in 2016."

He's coming back.

I don't want Kap back, but the reality is that he's coming back. I can either get onboard with it or stop watching 49ers football and I'll tell you what I won't stop watching 49ers football.

If Kap is kept and starts, watch the 49ers games next season to see if Kap can prove people wrong and win games for the team. If he can't, he's done with the 49ers as he hasn't win much of anything the last 2 seasons.

Like I said, kap's chances to succeed with the 49ers is low and his days are numbered regardless.

Not surprised at all. Chip Kelly has shown in Philly he likes to get his hands on as many QB as possible, Chip even gave Tim Tebow a try in 2015 and traded Matt Barkley to AZ before 2015 season.

If Kap stays 2016, Chip will switch between kap and BG and trade kap in 2017, this is the last chance and last year for kap with 49ers.

I don't think his chances to succeed are low if Kelly can enhance Kap's strength while forcing Kap to work on Fundamentals in the offseason. I just think Gabbert brings more to the table as a polished QB than Kap does.

IMO Kap is gone. They will bring in a second Vet QB to compete with Gabbert (Bradford, RG3, Foles, etc) on a cheap veteran deal, and they will Draft a QB somewhere in rounds 2-5.

That Money Kap will eat could go towards signing a guy that could dramatically improve our roster through FA.

If Chip and Baalke decide to keep Kap, it will be one of the Biggest mistakes they have ever made IMO, and thats kind of saying something.

Yeah but what if Kelly can hone in AND improve on Kap's playoff type of performances he's had. I must admit, his playoff performances have been damn good. But then again, it was still a small sample size on him. Either way, out coaching goes in the gutter along with our OL personnel and all of a sudden our QB play does also.

My position is this- What we saw from Kap under Harbaugh was his peak, and his peak was mostly achievable because his weaknesses were concealed very well by Harbaugh. Why should i believe that if Kap began to be exposed and regress under harbaugh, that it wouldn't be the same under Chip?

Here is the difference between Chip and Harbaugh when it comes to Kap, its really this simple- Harbaugh demanded less of Kap, Chip will demand more.

#49ers are in a good position in regards to the salary cap. I'm told the decision on Kaepernick come April 1 will not be a financial one.

I respectfully disagree. What you saw was his peak with Harbaugh. This means, plausibly, that he could go no further with him and thus regressed--we will really never know. It is possible that Chip could take him further.

They cannot cut Kap before April 1st if he is still injured. His contract is guaranteed if he is on the roster after 1st April.

I think Kap is back and will duel it out in camp, that's fine.

^this. Any value he still holds would be gone. Im not sure what value is still there, but another year of failure from Kap and he will be standing in the same line as Tim Tebow for roster tryouts.

If we are going to trade Kap it's got to be a draft day trade.
