I sure as heck didn't know who Skuta was when he was signed. Turned out to be a fantastic value signing. Apparently, if there's one thing Bellore can do, it's tackle (based on what DeUh posted above). So that's a nice fundamental ILB skill. Baalke has shown to give his STs coach a lot of love. Guys like Dahl are no doubt on the team for what they contribute on STs. Ventrone and Osgood were purely ST players and they made the 53.

Exactly.

Its not the flashy move that peeps want to see, but it makes the team better on ST.

There has been aback and forth over the past 4 years. In 2011 they drafted Colin Jones, picked up Costanzo and David Akers and traded for Ted Ginn and they have themselves a good year on ST.

The next year they trade Jones and let Costanzo go and they struggle on ST.

The next year the make a point to go and get ST players again in Kassem Osgood, Bubba Ventrone and Phil Dawson and draft Nick Moody and they have a good year.

Last year they let Osgood and Ventrone go along with Spillman and guess what happens?

Just seems every year they go out and make a point to sign guys specifically for ST it works out well for them. What I'm wondering is who will return kicks. Reggie? Kendall? Bruce? A draft pick?

its about competition, this is about special teams and its also about a coach going to bat for one of his former players and making the case to the front office and head coach. its always been about getting the right player and not the best player. only the people running the show know what the right player is and what that means.

maybe they had alot of good special teams guys and they felt they could cut him loose, maybe they do not place value on special teams thus making him expendable? all i know is that he is young, he has got a good nfl resume in regards to special teams which is an area we needed to retool,,, and we know how to develop and fit our linebackers into situations where they and our team will profit

Who knows, maybe the Jets and the Bills tried to sign him but he chose to reunite with his Special Team's coach which is currently with us.

but that would destroy the narrative that our coaches suck and we can not get players to come play for us

Good points...part of the Baalke-formula. Yeah, you'd have a mean competition with Ellington, Hunter, Hayne, Holiday, Bush, etc.

Marv is spot on. Good STs we do good. Poor STs we don't. If you ever listen to a new HC give his spiel it always comes around to the 3 phases of football. The O, the D, and....the STs. There is a good reason for that, in that it is oh so true...but never sexy, like a Carlos Hyde or Aldon. Still, STs are 1/3 of the game, or thereabouts, and if you don't invest in it, or you cheat some to improve your ILBs, then you get burned.

good price for a solid player that will help our special teams....it will be a bargain if he is capable of starting in a pinch if needed
