I agree Sitton may have been an upgrade, but I can't make the assertion he absolutely would have been based on what KS thought because I wasn't privy to that analysis. This is where things are tough to know/understand about decision-making with FAs. All I'm saying it's fair to have concerns, but that's different than questioning a process where admittedly we're somewhat blind to. Personnel is crazy tricky and I'm just saying I'm not sure what the plan was but also things don't always work out according to even the best-laid plans. And I've said this throughout free-agency; players also have to want to come to us. It's not a given that just because we pursue a player, that the player is interested in coming to the 49ers. This team still has much to prove. Remember that both McKinnon and Juice were offered more money by the Jets but still came to SF.

As far as the drills, well I think it's really early to say that be worried about players getting beat in those drills. And yes they may simulate game-like situations but, those drills are designed to benefit the defense. Those drills don't have protection calls, double-teams, RB pick-ups, the advantage of a called play, and I agree with you that not every pass-protect needs to be held for 5 seconds. You're right, Joe is our best pass-blocker and he often "wins" his battle at the 4-second mark. Again concern is noted, but I wouldn't only focus on one indicator to paint an entire picture. What I think is more important is the improvement - are the guys arrow up over time.

Now this is gonna shock; I'm a faithful pessimist - - I'm not expecting Cooper to come around and I don't expect this OL to gel until Week 6. I think we're going to run a lot more and the short passing game is going to need to save Jimmy from getting destroyed. If we can just reduce the number of hits, we'll be okay. The good news is we will further be able to fix the OL and other parts of team season-over-season.

When I think about our last great line, we were able to take Iupati as high as we did because the other areas of the OL were settled. I do agree with your point that the NFL has a whole tends to undervalue guards, but with a caveat; I've noticed starting guards that can play other positions are more valued than guys who can only play guard.

I'm sure we'll continue this discussion as we how long the return on their line changes will take.

Outstanding take. You actually hit on the piece that frustrates me the most. They went after Sherman and didn't let him leave the building. Then used top picks on CB's. We went after Richburg with fervor and paid big. We did the same with both RB and FB paying 3rd and 1st most expensive contracts. Same for T.

Anyway, you're right, until the FO attacks the ER and G positions with the same drive and intent, we'll continue to debate whether this was the right approach. And it still could be too.

We'll get there!

I'm expecting Phillips to use wide split(ie double 3tech) formations with Suh and Donald to isolate Laken Tomlinson and Mike Person/Erik Magnuson/Jonathan Cooper, and threaten double A-gap blitz from his LBs on every play to neutralize Weston Richburg. Of course, Kyle could always counter with his "base personnel" to force them to stay in theirs and help his guards. Again, this is going to be riveting football to watch.

I forgot to mention that the 49ers will face this style of attack in week 1 against Mike Zimmer's defense. He puts Barr and Kendricks over both A gaps on nearly ever passing down and forces the opposing OL to match up one-on-one with their purple people eater DL.

Yikes.

Like many, I was wondering why Kentavious was chosen, especially as we are pretty deep in DL talent. It occurred to me that this guy might make a mini Larry Allen. His strength etc would aid his chances a lot. I suspect the niners were not the only ones thinking that and that is why he was picked where he was. He could add 30 lbs of muscle and move his opposing side by himself.

Their defense is terrifying. It's the main reason why I won't be disappointed if the 49ers start 0-1.

Double A-gap threat on every single snap. One may come or both may come or neither may come, etc. But the threat is there on nearly every play. Mike Zimmer is one of the most underrated defensive minds in the game. He is excellent.

I see the qb holding the ball too long, those wide outside rusher shouldn't have a chance if the ball comes out on time. They blocked the middle front four decently. Is that Cam Newton and Bortles, not one of the better qb at getting the ball out.

I guess we'll just have to trust Shanahan to find a way to scheme against that. Even if the guards don't hold up against Minnesota, it's not like it's the first time Jimmy will have been under constant pressure.

Yep, that happens when you've got studs like Rhodes, Waynes, and Newman in man coverage on the back end.

They drafted Mike Hughes.
Couple of good screens with McKinnon, the Vikes will rethink that defense on passing downs

2nd string pass rushers are abusing McGlinchy who looks like a turnstile ... but he's a "real cool guy" so the 49ers fell in love with him ...meanwhile in NE ...

Is Trent Brown trade the latest coup for the Patriots?
The best news to come out of Patriots training camp is the emergence of Trent Brown as a very good solution at left tackle.... Brown, the trade using minimal draft capital .... Brown has been "awesome" and looks like a "franchise left tackle." Mike Giardi said he's "dominating" in camp..... and Brown is only 25 years old. Moving down a round and a half in the late third to get this guy could go down as a coup and a half.

Covering all of your bases I see. How many more threads ae you going to post this in? I guess you could put it in the training camp thread and the Kyle Shanahan thread since he probably had a say in the decision. You could put in the Dallas gameday thread and the 53 man projection thread as a sort of wistful reminder of what might have been. You could put it in the Arik Armstead thread so that all of the members of the Doom Squad could find another reason to rip on him, "Oh, well if Trent Brown were still here, Armstead would look even more lame in practice then he does now". You could put it in the George Kittle thread. "man, if Trent Brown were still our left tackle he would never have to stay back and help McGlinchey and could be out in the pattern all of the time and might have 1200 yards receiving". I must say the possibilities are endless

Preseason starts in a couple of days and then the real games follow after. Hang in there, don't judge yet until you watched him play some real games.
