I agree Sitton may have been an upgrade, but I can't make the assertion he absolutely would have been based on what KS thought because I wasn't privy to that analysis. This is where things are tough to know/understand about decision-making with FAs. All I'm saying it's fair to have concerns, but that's different than questioning a process where admittedly we're somewhat blind to. Personnel is crazy tricky and I'm just saying I'm not sure what the plan was but also things don't always work out according to even the best-laid plans. And I've said this throughout free-agency; players also have to want to come to us. It's not a given that just because we pursue a player, that the player is interested in coming to the 49ers. This team still has much to prove. Remember that both McKinnon and Juice were offered more money by the Jets but still came to SF.
As far as the drills, well I think it's really early to say that be worried about players getting beat in those drills. And yes they may simulate game-like situations but, those drills are designed to benefit the defense. Those drills don't have protection calls, double-teams, RB pick-ups, the advantage of a called play, and I agree with you that not every pass-protect needs to be held for 5 seconds. You're right, Joe is our best pass-blocker and he often "wins" his battle at the 4-second mark. Again concern is noted, but I wouldn't only focus on one indicator to paint an entire picture. What I think is more important is the improvement - are the guys arrow up over time.
Now this is gonna shock; I'm a faithful pessimist -- I'm not expecting Cooper to come around and I don't expect this OL to gel until Week 6. I think we're going to run a lot more and the short passing game is going to need to save Jimmy from getting destroyed. If we can just reduce the number of hits, we'll be okay. The good news is we will further be able to fix the OL and other parts of team season-over-season.
When I think about our last great line, we were able to take Iupati as high as we did because the other areas of the OL were settled. I do agree with your point that the NFL has a whole tends to undervalue guards, but with a caveat; I've noticed starting guards that can play other positions are more valued than guys who can only play guard.
I'm sure we'll continue this discussion as we how long the return on their line changes will take.
Outstanding take. You actually hit on the piece that frustrates me the most. They went after Sherman and didn't let him leave the building. Then used top picks on CB's. We went after Richburg with fervor and paid big. We did the same with both RB and FB paying 3rd and 1st most expensive contracts. Same for T.
Anyway, you're right, until the FO attacks the ER and G positions with the same drive and intent, we'll continue to debate whether this was the right approach. And it still could be too.
We'll get there!

Mike Zimmer is one of the most underrated defensive minds in the game. He is excellent.
