Correction: 49ers informed Gase that they don't want to compete in the playoffs, that they'd rather hire an assistant coach for less $$$$.

Good job with the interviews, York, Baalke, and Marathe. You guys definitely found the "best" HC for the job.
He does have a 100% winning percentage and has averaged 38 ppg

Everyone who is mad about this hire They are the same uninformed nobodies who think Jed York is a bad owner.

Please explain why this makes more sense than Fangio, who is also an in-house hire and was actually running the defense?

Because Tomsula has the "it" factor as a leader, teacher, and coach. Fangio is a great X's and O's guy, but doesn't have the intangibles Tomsula possesses.

Better than Adam Gase... Who becomes new Offensive Coordinator?

No, he really isn't better than Adam Gase. They have reported that Fangio will leave because of this. We are already worse than we were last year because of Fangio's departure. Add to that the fact that Tomsula is a defensive minded coach who isn't going to be able to help the offense and you will realize that Gase was a better choice. We would have lost Fangio either way, but now our defense is going to be worse and our offense will not improve unless Tomsula hires a great OC, which there is no evidence to believe he will.

I can't believe this. This is worse than the Singletary hire.

not at all.

after Tomsula took over for Sing....

He came across as a blue-collar everyman, a man of the people who probably wasn't the man to lead an NFL team on full-time basis. His players, however, blew his cover, noting he was doing plenty of teaching to a 5-10 team that beat Arizona, 38-7, with him in charge.

"(The season) was defined by mental mistakes," Jean Francois said after the 2010 finale. "Not being prepared for certain situations. When situations happened, I felt like we weren't prepared for that moment and it slipped out of our hands.

"This week of practice, with Tomsula, it was like we were preparing for every situation: four minutes, two minutes. What happens when it's 3rd-and-1? What happens when we're backed up in the end zone? He worked on every different situation so that when we got in the game it didn't feel brand new."
Love Tomsula as a DC, but HC...and they guy responsible for developing Kap and reviving the offense???

I love Tomusula. I think he could be the perfect guy to fill Jim's shoes here. He practically acted like the HC several times. Plus, he's undefeated as a HC

Happy for JT. He IS an excellent "teacher" and very "classy" and maybe he becomes the next JOHN Harbaugh. Maybe he has great connections inside the NFL and can bring in fantastic coordinators? Assistants. I don't want this SHOCKING NEWS to take away from him but...yeah...

Thank you! The only sane comment in this entire thread.

I especially like how our casual fans don't understand how important he has been to our team the last 3 years

I hope you are joking
I dont like it. We better hire a brilliant OC or we're f**ked.

We won't be able to retain an OC good or bad.
Hoping this hire turns into a mike Tomlin type story. What really hurts is fangio is now going to leave.
Definitely not a "sexy" hire. I just hope Fangio stays. And, I too, am worried about next season. I sure hope the front office knows what they're doing.
What happens to Fangio? This is my concern.

Still, I am glad they didn't bring in a Gase/McDaniels/overrated coordinator who looks good because of calling plays for Peyton Manning (who changes the play at the line half the time anyways) or Brady.
