Hey thl or jonny I was reading cosell's analysis of Kap this week and he quoted one play where Kap got sacked but said the play design was perfect against the defense called. I was wondering if you could find this play and show it, it must be one of his 6 sacks. Thanks again for this thread, even when we lose I enjoy looking at the film. Here's the quote.
"Believe me, they're designing things that should work. One of his sacks came on a play where the ball had to be thrown. It was the perfect route call against the coverage, and the ball had to be thrown. Only he can tell you why he didn't throw it."
I think this is the play he is referring to. I was chronologically going through the game, but I wasn't planning on going into the 49ers' 4Q possessions anyway because the Moody personal foul call was horse poop and it was then I knew the game was over. But here it is.
4Q 2nd & 9
49ers: To Kap's right is the Sail concept (Ellington + Patton + VD). Ellingon's route is a clearing route to push the deep 1/3 defender (blue) back and out of the area they want to attack. The curl/flat defender (orange) is who the 49ers want to attack.
SEA: cover3
After completing the playaction, Kap starts to slide right, but has to halt because of pressure off the edge. Millerwill shove the pass rusher out of harms way. VD flat route draws the attention of the curl/flat defender.
As Kap steps up in the pocket to buy time, orange is shaded towards VD and there is a vacant area behind him due to Ellington and VD's route. Kap stepping up also causes the hook/curl defender to step forward because he thinks Kap might scramble. This is more than enough time for Patton to work his away across the field which allows this route combination to completely develop. Kap starts looking towards Alonzo Smith's direction.
Kap continues to look to ASmith which I think causes some of the separation for Patton.
Scramble for +8
Kap bought time for himself and for the route combination with his step up into the pocket. Then he didn't give the concept a chance by looking backside too soon.
