Continuation of drive from post #68
1st & 10 - Designed QB Sweep right for +2.

2nd & 8
49ers will use playaction to try to hit some Curls behind the LBs.
SEA: cover3

Kap completes his dropback and sees this. It's an inside out read of the Curls. Boldin is first, Crabs is second, based on the depth they run their routes with Boldin breaking first. The hook/curl defender (orange) and the curl/flat defender(blue) do a nice job dropping back and shading properly towards Boldin and Crabs, defeating both the routes. Boone gives up pressure and you can see the pass rusher about to break through.

Kap evades pressure in the pocket and rolls right. This causes red to leave his zone and Miller will sneak by.

Kap targets Miller. (this is so you can tell when Kap is releasing the ball when seeing the gif)

Miller just caught the ball.

+22 yards.

After getting to the SEA 32 (this drive started on the 49ers 6 yard line), the 49ers would go -2, -1, -10, punt.

1st & 10
49ers: 4 Verticals in base 21 personnel to keep SEA in base 4-3
SEA: cover3

After playaction, Kap looks to his right. There's a chance with VD having outside leverage on Sherman and EThomas (FS) shading towards Boldin. Kap decides not to take that chance.

Good pocket, but the routes are covered. Thinking he has a running lane, Kap takes off.

Sacked for -2. Some will say dump to Hyde, it's 1st down. In Kap's defense, if he can get by the Dline, he has Hyde as a blocker and it's 1v1 with another LB in open space which can net 8-10 yards. Easy to say in hindsight, he should have dumped to Hyde.

I'm fairly certain I know what play he's referring to. It's the one where Patton is running wide open behind the LBs, in front of the safeties. They showed a replay of Patton waving his arm during the telecast. I'll show it later - it's in the 4th quarter. It was a good playcall versus cover3 and I want to say it's the type of play an offense saves and waits for a good time to use it. Sail concept vs cover3

There's also another play coming up on this drive that's a possibility.

2Q

2nd & 12
Read option. Notice VD.

Kap reads the orange defender who crashes down on the HB dive (inside zone). Kap keeps the ball.

wtf VD. -1 yard

that's a huge gain.
kap breaks that outside automatically and gets to the 20 probably easily
wow there are no words

Yeah...VD does a great job of blocking the 32 1/2 yard line. WTF, He is either still really hurt or has cashed out this entire season.

3rd & 13

SEA: cover1 (5 man pressure)

SEA fakes sending 6 rushers, only send 5 with 1 backed up to spy. Kap completes his 5 step drop and is looking at Boldin.

Boldin's inside breaking route wins versus Sherman's outside leverage. The spy is too shallow to play the passing lane to Boldin. It's a blitz, gotta get rid of the ball.

Kap pump fakes, but it's to Crabs who hasn't completed his pivot route.

Sacked for -10

After a nice drive that started from their own 6 yard line, the 49ers end it like that. A FG would have been fine to go up 10-3. Punt.

I think this is the play he is referring to. I was chronologically going through the game, but I wasn't planning on going into the 49ers' 4Q possessions anyway because the Moody personal foul call was horse poop and it was then I knew the game was over. But here it is.

4Q 2nd & 9
49ers: To Kap's right is the Sail concept (Ellington + Patton + VD). Ellingon's route is a clearing route to push the deep 1/3 defender (blue) back and out of the area they want to attack. The curl/flat defender (orange) is who the 49ers want to attack.
SEA: cover3

After completing the playaction, Kap starts to slide right, but has to halt because of pressure off the edge. Millerwill shove the pass rusher out of harms way. VD flat route draws the attention of the curl/flat defender.

As Kap steps up in the pocket to buy time, orange is shaded towards VD and there is a vacant area behind him due to Ellington and VD's route. Kap stepping up also causes the hook/curl defender to step forward because he thinks Kap might scramble. This is more than enough time for Patton to work his away across the field which allows this route combination to completely develop. Kap starts looking towards Alonzo Smith's direction.

Kap continues to look to ASmith which I think causes some of the separation for Patton.

Scramble for +8

Kap bought time for himself and for the route combination with his step up into the pocket. Then he didn't give the concept a chance by looking backside too soon.

Not giving the concept a chance & looking Backside too soon, How often have we seen this? If Kap would just concentrate on staying Concept side a little longer it would have great benefits. However here I can see with the scramble, maybe he thinks the back will break free.

I just read what Cossell wrote again and it said the play was a sack. Oops. I'll take another look tomorrow.
