Sure hope so. Sometimes you need to have that rock-bottom moment before you turn the corner. It worked for Alex, maybe the light bulb clicked for Kap after the Raider loss. His demeanor changed after that. Seemed more relaxed and at ease, and even in defeat against Seattle, he looked more comfortable. Hopefully he carries over this new attitude into the off-season and really ignores all the outside crap said about him. Just concentrate on being a smart QB.

I think he will. Everybody has to fight through to the other side. It's coming for other players as well. Sometimes people get bailed out and other times it doesn't happen for them. It didn't happen for Kap he couldn't go 14-24 140 yards and an int and his team win 30-0 (Dalton sunday)
but by far imo he's the only one besides luck who is making actual strides in becoming a complete quarterback. he can always run, that's in his hip pocket

but he's getting better at what the great qb's do.
he just needs adequate consistent protection.
any qb in the nfl from brady to manning to rogers to brees gets skiddish when the protection isn't holding up, in fact its the key to beating them.
Kap went through an entire season of inconsistent protection, he couldn't trust his line this year. the running backs could not trust the line this year and it showed in the play.
that's why at times he's sacked immediately takes a sack when he shouldn't or leaves the pocket when it's decent.. because he can't depend on the line doing what they need to every single down. we've seen what he can do with just average protection...
he's gotten smarter
he's putting in the time in the film room.
brees, rogers, manning, brady... they make their pre snap reads and most of the time go off that read, if they're wrong then they go through the progressions.
kap is better at his pre snap reads than he was he will improve on that and he is improving on moving on from those pre snap reads. he is growing
the crazy part is, if the line could block consistently and he could trust it to block consistently he might have had a breakout season..
hopefully the line gets solidified and can be on par with the best again and then we can count on the run game being consistent again.
i believe in him and his ability to lead.
i believe in being healthy a line that can do the job.
i believe that this team will fight these last 2 games just like it was the playoffs.
im proud of the effort in the last game. it would have been easy to mail it in and they didn't as crazy as it seems i believe we earned the respect of the seahawks players performing like we did under the circumstances.

the only reason we're 7-7 right now leaving all coaching out of it is because we could call on 8db's practice squad players, backup linebackers udfa's and all 8 offensive linemen to play all throughout the year.

After SEA finishes a FG drive using two Reid personal fouls. The 49ers would have their best offensive drive versus SEA this season.

First play of drive
1Q 1st & 10
49ers try to get a quick triangle stretch over middle. It's a 3 step drop and a decision has to be made. This is a ball control passing play. Nothing big to be had here, just a quick 4-6 yard gain.
SEA: cover3 with man coverage on the backside.


Kap completes his 3 step dropback and sees Boldin for a short gain. The LB has a good jump on Boldin's snag and would smack Boldin immediately after a catch.


Kap doesn't pull the trigger and rolls right. By rolling right, it causes orange to leave VD and help on the possible Kap scramble. Gore to the flat draws the attention of the strongside flat/curl defender (blue). Celek turns his route to the Flat into a wheel route and heads upfield.


Kap's roll right causes orange to take action. This left VD open which draws the attention of the deep 1/3 defender (Sherman), who left his assignment to shade towards VD.


Nice throw on the run. +31 yards

Gore run for +2

2nd & 8 (it says 9 on the telecast)

Now time for our weekly 'wtf Boone' moment.


Iupati pulls right. Everyone else fires out to run block. Boone steps back to pass pro. He gets a sad face.


Iupati pulls right into Boone's rear.

49er's look to attack the two hook/curl defenders by creating a 3v2 situation. VD's and Lloyd's route look to open up Boldin over the middle.
SEA: cover3


VD draws the attention of blue (weakside hook/curl defender). Lloyd draws the attention of orange (strongside hook/curl).


Boldin is to find the quiet area with the passing lane between the two horizontally stretched hook/curl defenders. Kap is mid windup.


Kap throwing to space that Boldin will occupy.


Good zone defenses have smaller windows. Kap has to rocket the throw in there.

After the Boldin catch to move the chains.

QB keeper left. Kap for +4

VD helps combo block with Staley then moves to the second level. Cleveland (#45) drives his defender back. Miller targets his block.


Miller and Cleveland provide the hole for Boone to lead.

SEA would end up punting on their next offensive possession, but not before getting their biggest pass play of the game to help swing field position.

2Q 1st & 10

SEA: 3 vertical routes.
49ers: Looks like cover1, but Reid isn't playing in the middle of the field. More like cover6 with 5 man pressure. Bethea and Cox is playing Quarters. Reid's side is playing cover2 zone.


DJohnson gives the outside release and passes off coverage to Reid who quickly back peddles to his deep 1/2 zone. Bethea and Box match the verticals on their side of the field. SEA does a good job picking up the blitz.


Dial does a good job pushing the RG into RW's face, but RW still gets off the throw to Cox 1v1 with Kearse. Cox is step for step.


Cox gets his hand in there, but Kearse comes down with the very nice throw.

Seattle better enjoy this sweep. With this roster, and a competent offensive game plan, it will be a very different story next year.

SEA would eventually punt after not being able to recover from an offensive holding call, but this happened on the drive.

After a DJohnson holding call during the punt, the 49ers are pushed back to the 6 yard line.

2nd & 8 - Counter left
Gore for no gain

Gore initially lines up wide, a LB follows him. This alerts Kap that it is man coverage. Kap tells Gore to come back to get inline (green dashes) - blue LB follows (KJ Wright).


49ers: Lloyd and Boldin run the Drive concept. Lloyd and Crabs run the Mesh concept (man coverage buster).
SEA: cover 1 (with a QB spy, the LB lined up across from Kap). Blue LB is highlighted just to show that he followed Gore.


Kap completes his dropback and will wait for the Mesh concept to develop. Good job by the Oline with Gore providing 6 man protection.


Crabs gets into the line of sight of the orange defender (Sherman) - Lloyd's man defender. This hopes to earn separation for Lloyd by having Sherman think a pick is coming. Any break of stride will help to earn separation.


Kap is mid windup targeting Lloyd.

^^^^that mesh play to Lloyd worked very nice, especially on dick sherm. I also noticed we really started using that stacked empty set with a Back on the line to help in blocking. That sort of formation lends itself to a block and release type play. Could be an easy way to get VD going a bit in the final two games if we decided to put him in that on the line postion.

I'll be honest, these were the types of plays I thought we would see all season long with the new WR core.

Toooooootally! And the Hawks weakness is lateral speed, quickness (chasing players across the field) and misdirections (b/c they overpursue) heavily. Scheme alone could have done them in IMHO esp. with the personnel we have b/c, like you said, it plays to our strengths.

Sad. It seems so simple. You have ZERO burners on the offense, but all of the receivers are great route runners. Most people would think of crossing patterns and a lot of pre-snap motion.

That is exactly how the Chiefs beat them. We have very similar personnel.
