That's because the gap between Smith and the next QB (whomever that might be) is significant -- in every way. Kaepernick has the lead for the No. 2 job, but his spot is not entirely secure. The competition for the second and third jobs should lead to some interesting competition over the next three exhibition games.

Tolzien made a strong impression on me when I attended the NFL scouting combine in 2011. I thought he was terrific. The knock on him then was that he did not have great arm strength. His arm has gotten stronger since then. I think it's pretty noticeable.

While this is good news that we know AS is our guy and no controversy..but as a Whole the QB position is not so much

it will be Smith, Kaepernick, Tolzien...even though Tolzien is clearly better than Kap at this point

Probably.. and probably the way it should be for another season. If Ck7 deserves a demotion? then fine. But if it's pretty even? I don't want Ck7's confidence shattered by being bumped down to # 3.
Espn first take says they have reports that 49ers plan to limit him to 20-25 snaps a game?

skip said that will frustrate randy and he will become a problem....
For Moss, I think it simply becomes a "see-how-it-goes" plan. If Moss comes in, makes plays, and feels physically good and mentally locked in? He will see more snaps. If the physical and mental issues show up whatsoever? He becomes more of a situational player for us.

The problem is Skip in a major idiot. Moss should be fine, he knew what he was signing up for. Moss, if he plays like he should, will get the catches and plays he should get. No worries. No guaranteed money, so can be cut and only pay what he earned per week.
I think Moss' limited snaps makes sense because the 49ers offense is run heavy and Moss' major weakness is probably his blocking...so I'm assuming he's only going to see the field in obvious pass situations, and in the red zone.

I think it's a good idea limiting him around 20-25 snaps considering his reputation of taking plays off.

Plus, if his speed truly has tailed off, he will really only be a threat in the Red Zone, and there aren't that many RZ plays during a game anyway.

I, for one, don't think he's lost a major step. I think when the bright lights are on, he's going to show up big time again.
