First, Smith found a familiar target, locating tight end Vernon Davis 30 yards down the field on a deep wheel route against the coverage of linebacker Michael Wilhoite. On the very next play, Smith attacked the left sideline again, this time on a 30-yard deep throw to veteran wideout Randy Moss. Undrafted wideout Anthony Mosley gave up the big passing play.

Smith completed his third deep sideline pass of the period to running back Kendall Hunter, who slipped behind undrafted linebacker Joe Holland's man coverage to catch a 25-yard pass. Smith stood out throughout the session, but so did some of the team's defensive backs.

In the final red zone team period, Carlos Rogers broke up Smith's slant pass intended for Michael Crabtree. Smith later pitched a short shovel pass to Frank Gore for a touchdown."

I wanna hear Smith completing passes to Moss vs. people like Rogers, Brown.... Not these unknown scrubs

This I don't care how many passes are completed to some guy who's going to be working at a Safeway by Week 1. Throw it to Crabs, Moss, Mario, Ginn, Fumbles, etc...

Oh ok. Four passes. To Vernon Davis, to Randy Moss, to Kendall Hunter and incomplete to Michael Crabtree. So these people are going to be working in Safeway by week 1?
I thought Smith made a 30 yarder completion to Crabtree recently....

I can't believe you guys are counting completion, incomplete, INTs, etc. in Camp. You know they are allowed mistakes to some degree so they can learn and adjust for game time situation...

Hahaha....must convert 4th and 26 in practice!!!
Starters vs starters dont happen that often in practice... Typically one side will start dominating the other and coaches egos get involved and some, not all, starters will be sent in to make things more difficult to the dominating side. Coaches want to build confidence with their starters without making things to easy. It also makes it easier to identify 2nd and 3rd stringers who can play in this league. Tolz, Cox, etc are making plays against the 1's without the support of starting caliber talent.

And I doubt any of the receivers (Palmer, tyms, owusu) will be prepping their bagboy skills... The entire league is watching our roster for players that slip through the cracks... Mainly on defense, but also the offense after adding Moss, and MM. When you return most of your roster on a young 13-3 team, it's more likely a good player doesn't make the roster than say with the dolphins or rams. It's a nice problem to have for once.

I just think we keep 3 TE's. Nate Byham is nowhere to be seen, and Rueland made some nice grabs vs Minn

I would give it to Kaep for a big run. Why try to throw it and risk an INT...

Demarcus Dobbs will be our 3rd TE and he plays Defense. Extra roster spot for somebody else

Dobbs will be needed more on defense with the injury to Ian Williams also

RJF would be the first guy in to relieve any DL starters.

I agree, I also think that Nate Byham's chances are done. Even though he is a good blocker, dobbs can do that. They should just cut him now

Very likely, yes. I'd hang on to some scrubs for a little longer though... (injuries and camp fodder/preseason depth in mind)
Smith has clearly distinguished himself as the 49ers' No. 1 QB and, arguably, their most irreplaceable player. That's because the gap between Smith and the next QB (whomever that might be) is significant -- in every way. Kaepernick has the lead for the No. 2 job, but his spot is not entirely secure. The competition for the second and third jobs should lead to some interesting competition over the next three exhibition games.

Tolzien made a strong impression on me when I attended the NFL scouting combine in 2011. I thought he was terrific. The knock on him then was that he did not have great arm strength. His arm has gotten stronger since then. I think it's pretty noticeable.
