The folks at Football Outsiders conduct various charting exercises to help develop more detailed information about what we see on the football field. Their latest release of information is a rundown of quarterback sacks for each team. Thanks to Ougadas for pointing it out in the Fanshots. They went through and determined how many sacks took place in the first 2.5 seconds or less of a play and how many sacks took 3 or more seconds to develop.http://www.ninersnation.com/2011/10/7/2475864/49ers-alex-smith-sacks-football-outsiders
49ers QB Alex Smith has been sacked 14 times through four games, which is third among NFL quarterbacks. Based on FO's game-charting, two os his sacks were long sacks and eight were short sacks. That would leave four sacks in between 2.5 and 3 seconds. His eight short sacks were the most among any QB and came on 6.61% of his pass attempts plus sacks (pass attempts do not normally include pass plays ending in a sack). His two long sacks came on 1.65% of pass attempts plus sacks.
While Alex Smith has had issues in the past of holding on to the ball too long, that would not appear to be the case this season, at least with regards to sacks. It's not a perfect stat because QB pressures and QB hits that don't result in a sack are not included. However, I'd say it's still useful information. Alex Smith's short sack rate is three times the NFL average. It may not tell us everything we need to know, but I think that says something about the performance of his blockers, whether it be the line, the running backs or whatever. It's not a perfect stat, but it helps add a little context to the always popular Alex Smith discussion.
Like I said, I'm just throwing it out there, Oldman.
You also have to factor in pocket awareness, release time, elusivness and ability to make quick decisions. Elite QBs are very good at all the above. Remember when Az had that Superbowl run with Warner? He was unsackable (not a word, I know) and it had nothing to do with the Oline. With that said, I 'm not saying Alex is or isn't doing well, just that Elite QBs can skew the stats and make guys look better than they are. Contrary to your belief, I am not anti-Alex, but to act like he is the next coming of Drew Brees at this point is laughable.
Here's to Alex having a career game today....

Just saying the bolded there does not bode well for your true allegiances. Who is saying that Alex is the second coming of Brees? Saying such a thing makes you seem just as bad as the worst of the detractors... like you're not even pleased that Alex is doing well.

I have tempered enthusiasm, but that's not good enough for you. It's like you wont be happy until every Niner fan stands in line to go down on Smith.

And once again, just saying such a thing lets us all know how you really feel. I'd rather you just be honest about it. Works better for credibility and gives a sense of intellectual honesty.

Second year, with no offseason, learning a new blocking scheme.
The fact that it's his second season his is only defense. Getting beat one-on-one by outside speed rushers has got nothing to do with a learning blocking scheme or not having an offseason. It's just poor fundamentals.

Where did you learn how to argue, studying the Salem witch hunt records or the McCarthy trials?

Good post. Yes, at 1.25 years at the position, ADavis hasn't been as advertised he would be.
A). Way too early to abandon ship. And way too early to move him to anoher position.
B). Staley was an Excellent RTackle and I'd move him back there. Then Boone to LT and have Davis become the swing back-up for both positions. He'll get lots of reps on the practice squad and have a full season to develop.
C). During that time it could be determined if he is RGuard material.
D). When the season ends, there will be plenty of information to make a decision going forward.

I'm really glad I read this back and forth between you and Oldman. If there is anyone on this board that presents facts and statistics to back up his argument, it's Oldman. Class act as well. The fact that you're "debating" the way you are makes me understand where you're coming from.
I was starting to think I was losing my touch in the Occupy Wall Street thread. Now I just see that your arguments are weak everywhere.

Sure, pile on. The fact that your jumping on me just because I dont agree with you regarding an unrelated topic only makes me that much more certain I am right and you are wrong....LOL. I dont break just because I'm not in the "in crowd."

AD looked just fine today...made some big blocks in the running game, didn't allow a sack. Give the kid a break...he's just 21 years old, he'll be fine.

He looked fine because he wasn't playing next to Chilo.
