There are plenty of ways to describe San Francisco 49ers LB Fred Warner. All-Pro. Team captain. Defensive leader. Difference-maker.
Warner entered the 2026 season already sitting second behind Patrick Willis on San Francisco's all-time tackles list. Then, in the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams, he recorded 11 tackles, surpassing the Hall of Fame linebacker for the most tackles in franchise history.
And while that accomplishment says plenty about Warner's production, Kyle Shanahan believes it's the way he approaches the job every day that makes him so special. "He amazes me every day," Shanahan told Matt Maiocco on Friday. "Fred, he's one of the most amazing people I've been around, and he's such a freak in terms of a player. I mean his height, his length, his speed, his physicality, all that stuff."
Then Shanahan got to what he believes separates Warner from almost everyone else. "But I've never been around a guy who just every single day seems like it's the most important day of his life, just in terms of how he attacks everything."
Shanahan has watched that consistency for years. Warner came into the NFL as a third-round pick in 2018 and immediately established himself as a game-changer. He started all 16 games as a rookie and finished with 124 tackles. He has been the leader of the San Francisco defense since.
Shanahan remembers seeing that player early. What has impressed him most, though, is that Warner hasn't stopped improving. "I mean it's every day in the season for 17 straight weeks," Shanahan added. "But come up here in February and just look how he is out on the field every day once the offseason starts. I think he takes three weeks off. You gotta ask him; I'm not sure."
That's the part of Warner's career that can sometimes get overlooked. The production is obvious; we all see it. The preparation is harder to measure.
Shanahan doesn't have any trouble measuring it, though. "But he is the most consistent human I've been around, or athlete, both," he said. "Which is why he gets better and better each year."
Warner was recently ranked number one among off-ball linebackers in ESPN's 2026 survey of more than 70 NFL executives, coaches, and scouts. One NFL coordinator summed up Warner's biggest strength simply: "He diagnoses faster than anyone. That's really his secret sauce. Processes the game at an incredibly fast level."
And Warner doesn't seem interested in simply maintaining what he's already accomplished. He keeps attacking the next day as if he still has something to prove. And after eight-plus seasons, that's apparently still enough to amaze his head coach.
