I have a ton of pics to post from today's practice, but a few observations first:

- ALDON SMITH IS A BEAST. He's not only huge, but he's consistently unstoppable regardless of who's blocking him. He's usually the first to the QB, and does so with a number of different moves (inside jab step, outside speed rush). He also does a pretty good job of holding the point in the run game, which is surprising since he's still getting used to standing up.

- Ian Williams at NT really made some nice plays. Whether it was plugging up the middle on the run game or even getting pressure up the middle on a few occasions, he really looked like a classic 3-4 nose tackle. I'd be surprised if he didn't shine in pre-season games and make a strong case to make the final roster.

- Kendall Hunter will make an impact for us this year! Though not nearly as stout/stocky as Maurice Jones-Drew, he has a very similar running style.

- Ted Ginn made a ton of plays today. He dropped a few easy ones during warm ups, but when it came to 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills, he consistently caught the ball and turned it upfield, each time running it out to the end zone in the tradition of the great Jerry Rice.

- Alex Smith was solid, especially on the underneath/check-down routes (and no, that's not a backhanded compliment). He had a beautiful throw to Ted Ginn towards the end of practice that was awesome to watch. But he made his living today throwing to the TEs and RBs.

- Kapernick has a HUGE upside and ALL the tools necessary to be a great one, but is so raw that I can't see him contributing anytime soon. When he lets it rip, the ball gets there in a hurry and seems to stick to the receivers hands. But more often than not (especially during 11-on-11 drills), he's tenative with his reads and misfires. Still, the talent is undeniable (the TD pass to Vernon over the middle was a thing of beauty, the pickoff by Joseph was not)...we just have to be VERY patient as fans.

- Jeremiah Masoli can play QB at the next level. He may never be a starter, and he may not even make this team, but the guy can play. He had the play of the day with a roll-out bomb to WR Justin Beiler (ball thrown 40+ yards downfield while moving to his right), and consistently hit his WRs in stride with 1 exception late in the practice. I didn't know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised by his play, and wouldn't be shocked if he stayed around on the P.S.

- Braylon Edwards is huge! Yes, he dropped about 3 passes today and overall looked rusty, but there's no denying that this guy will eventually be a playmaker for us.

- Tramaine Brock made a number of plays and really stood out among all the CBs today (IMO).

- P-Willy is king beast! After LB drills and 3 hours of practice (inlcuding RB/LB drills where he CLOCKED a RB so hard stopped and took notice, and a pick of Alex Smith), he went straight to the weight room area and worked out for about 45 minutes or so. That's what a Hall of Fame LB is all about.

- Don't be surprised if Larry Grant starts over Bowman next to Willis. He looks the part of a TED ILB, and made a number of plays as well. I also liked the way newcomer Blake Castonzo looked as an ILB replacement, and that was after tweaking his ankle in earlier kickoff coverage drills.

- Harbaugh has this team practicing up tempo, and everyone is in to it. I've been to practices before where guys were mentally checked out and just going through the paces. But not today. Everyone was moving, hustling, talking to each other and generally seemed excited to be out there. There's definitely a different energy and buzz on that field, and that was the MOST exciting thing I saw today (other than Willis killing fools, of course).

so everyone is a super star?

How is this everyone being superstars? As for 9er talk goes that's one of the most level-headed summaries I've ever seen.

1. Aldon Smith looks good.

2). Willams might make the final roster.

3). Hunter can make an impact.

4) Ginn had a good day, despite some drops.

5) Smith was solid.

6) We're going to have to be patient with Colin K.

7) Masoli might make the practice squad.

8) Edwards is big, but rusty and dropping passes.

9) Willis was playing well.

10) Larry Grant looks better than Bowman at ILB.

11) Harbaugh runs an uptempo practice.

I saw Aldon Smith scratch his a** for an extended period of time. To me, this is an indicator that he has a hemmoroid. At the very least a rectal bleed. He needs to get with the program now or he'll never be football ready, let alone toilet ready.
Can't believe Miss Aldon BUST Smith has his hands on his hips.

Only if they do it while trying to block
Well it's pretty clear at this point that Baalke was justified in selecting Aldon Smith. By no means am I implying that it is a guarantee for Aldon to have success at the pro level. But if reports from camp are accurate than Aldon Smith does indeed show the signs of a pass rush machine in the making. Our team desperately needed help in the pass rush. Nobody in their right mind can blame Baalke for making the selection that he did with our 1st round pick. Clearly his evaluation of Aldon was spot on.

So, no athlete will ever put his hands on his hips unless they are out of shape? Is that kinda what I'm reading here?

This is new levels of insanity even for the zone.

ALL athletes put their hands on their hips. ALL athletes get tired. What makes them in shape is not that they don't get tired, its how long it takes to get tired, that they are able to continue even when they ARE tired and they bounce back quickly.

Looking at a photo of a guy with his hands on his hips and concluding that he is out of shape is something that could only happen on the internet with a bunch of couch potatoes who have no clue what they are talking about.

obviously you dont actually read posts you just scan them. look at all of the tc vids and everytime i see aldon he has his hands on his hips. lol, at the notion i looked at one picture and made some obscure claim. it was a simple observation of mine, that usually indicates a player is tired, nothing more.

he is playing harder now then ever before in his football career. everyone is bigger, stronger and faster at the pro level. couple that with the fact that he has only been able to practice for a week, and it stands to reason that he isnt in top football shape yet. he is a rookie and everything is harder for a rookie.

i dont see why you had to jump down my throat for making a observation that may or may not be correct. it was just something i took note of because it stood out to me. geezz!!!!

Hands on the hips is a way to see if someone is tired. it's not going to determine if they are dead dog tired or if the just need to catch their breath real quick. So yes fine observation. Some people have to try and defend someone to the death sometimes. This is a non argument and a sure sign that people are tired and ready for some football action.
FYI tho that pic, he did not look tired but more waiting for the next play to start.

People put their hands on their hips when they're bored. When they're waiting. When they're angry. Tired. Puzzled. Happy. Superman. Etc.
