Could smith be developed?

I really think Smith could be developed. Harbaugh is what he always needed from the beginning. Do you really want to line up with some rookie and go 2 - 14. Obviously Alex is better than any rookie at this point.

Obvious to who? All the buffoons out there?

Smith is like DeBerg was to the Niners (if you were even around those days) . . . except worse . . . much, MUCH worse. Like Walsh said about DeBerg: He does just enough to lose you the game. Smith is a loser; he'd be a cancer on this team.

I'd be hugely surprised if they sign him. Certainly, I'd be off the Baalke bandwagon if they did. The team needs to bury the rotten eggs of the past and let in some fresh air.

You guys who keep advocating him, just don't get it. It's pathetic. Just let it go.

If he is the best out there then we should consider it. What is pathetic is guys that have no clue trying to act like they are experts. The main problem with this team was coaching that didn't understand how to use talent, whereas that is supposedly one of Harbaughs strengths. If he wants Smith, and if Smith would still want to play here, I wouldn't have a problem with it. He is a better option than McNabb, Young and Orton.

I agree. And under Harbaugh he could do pretty well.

Wow... Yall are crazy to think Alex Smith can even be put in the same sentence as McNabb. Really, get over it, he is the biggest bust the niners have ever had.

How did McNabb do this season? The guy is a mess and I wouldn't touch him with a 10ft pole.

We were close to being a 10 win team with Alex even with the biggest dipchits of a coaching staff ever assembled.

Now with a creative offensive mind, who knows...

Please stop with the Alex Smith talk. It is not in his best interest to resign here and not in the 49ers best interest to resign him. He has been here to long and needs a fresh start with a new team and we need to bring in new QBs. If the CBA gets fixed i would like to trade for Josh Johnson. You could get him for a low draft pick, he has experience starting in the NFL and he has a history with Jim Harbaugh. I don't think he would be our QB of the future but could be a starter while our draft pick learns.

You don't need to be an expert to see that Alex Smith is a below average NFL QB. Kyle Orton, who was drafted in the 4th round of the Alex Smith draft, has thrown 71 TD's and 48 Int's while Smith has thrown 51 TD's and 53 Int's. McNabb is one year removed from a 3,500 yard 22 TD season, which Smith has never done. Vince Young has a 30-17 career record as a starter. I don't know Smith's record, but I know it isn't a winning one.

If your fine with settling for mediocrity and wasting another year in the careers of Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, and Patrick Willis, then by all means bring back Alex Smith.
I have no faith in Kolb, first of all. But if he were a FA, I'd say sure, give him a shot.

However, if the Eagles still ask for 2 firsts, or even just one first round pick, my answer is a hearty, "Hell No!"

As hard as it may be to believe, I would actually prefer Alex Smith to most of the "vet" names being tossed around. He's as serviceable as most of the names being discussed and actually does have some upside being 26 and (we all know his story) etc. Of course, he'd never agree to come back even if we wanted him after how much he's been openly disparaged by the fans.

My First Choice Would Be To Try Getting Kolb By Trading A Draft Pick.

2nd Option Would Be To Sign A FA...Example: Orton Or Mcnabb, Draft Cam Newton If He's Available At 7th And Let Him Grow Under Mcnabb...I Would Not Take Any Other QB With Our 7th Pick. I Think All Other Qb's In The Draft Are 2nd Rounders, Mallet Is Good But Did Not Like How He Moved In The Pocket. If We Cant Get Newton @ 7 I Say We Go For a CB Or DE And Draft A QB Like Kellen Moore Or Blaine Gabbert In The 2nd Round...........

Let Me Hear Your Opinions

You do not need to be an expert to see that the coaching on this team for the past 8 years had no f**king clue how to develop a QB. You put too much on one player and do not take into account the teams they were playing for, the coaches they had, etc...

McNabb is washed up, I have always liked him, but we are a few years too late on that one.

Would you not be fitting that category?

Take a break and reflect on it. Because I have sat here for years on end now and read the same old stuff from you on this subject. And you have been proved wrong over and over and over and over again. But still you go on.

People who ostensibly know something about the game (they write about it for a living) seem unanimous in their assessment that he Niners need a QB. Ever watch the NFL network? Even Baalke and Harbaugh say that the #1 priority if finding a QB.Or in your language is that the same as saying: "We have a QB". But some of you guys . . . well you know so much better. And those who don't agree . . . well, they're clueless. And the beat goes on. The excuses accumulate. With some of you guys, I guess, they wouldn't find a "clue" if it crept up and bit them in the ar$e.

One telling thing you did say: If Harbaugh "wants Smith". So if he is not a Niner are you going to say it was Smith's choice not to be? Because that would be so typical of the type of excuses you guys come up with.

What I'm saying is: Give it a rest. Seesh!
Troy smith and Nate davis shouldn't even be an option
Alex Smith is a great temporary solution.

Alex Smith has played six years and thrown 1,500 passes. If he was going to get it he would have done so by now. See Matt Leinart.

And don't assume that Harbaugh can magically take any QB and turn him into something. See Ken Whisenhunt and Matt Leinart.

Very, very interesting... hmm... I say I hope that Trent, Jim and Andrew are aware of this 'loophole'...

Thanks for posting this link, my son and I were wondering if it would be possible for him to skip the draft and then go pro with the understanding that he would get PAID by the Niners.
