Quarterback depth chart to start the season:
Alex Smith, David Carr, Troy Smith, Nate Davis

Yet the actual talent of these player's could feasibly be exactly backwards:
Nate Davis, Troy Smith, David Carr, Alex Smith

The toughest leap would be Carr over Alex Smith of course.

Also, notice how the more risk taking players were at the bottom of our depth chart, while the most conservative players were at the top?

Singletary's view of football is painful to even listen to.

"I like all the 'heroics' only when it works."
"Troy Smith has played OK."
"Every position is equally important to winning games."
"Ya, a kid might have a great arm, and great talent, but if he doesn't take the time to learn the play book (the all-important 'play book'), let's just say you've got to have a certain work ethic to be a successful pro in this league."

Singletary's world is getting turned upside down. Reality is showing that TALENT is what matters most, not play book knowledge, not practice reps, not training camp, not hard work; just TALENT.

He even uses the word "leadership", as a replacement for the word "talent", because he can't accept that "talent" and "will power" are two separate and unrelated things. You see, because Troy Smith "leads" the ball down the field and "wills" the team to victory, he doesn't actually throw it, or make clutch plays; those things are just a result of leadership and will power.

David Baas isn't a great leader, nor did he have many practice reps at center. Crabtree has barely seen a training camp in a 49er uniform. Troy Smith had very little practice time with the offense and almost zero reps with the first team, before stepping in as starter.

we need to keep Alex as our number 2 for the remainder of the season.

Why?

Redrathman and Valrod are right. The trading deadline has passed. But if it hadn't -- we'd be foolish for not shopping Smith. The time is right to get something for him. His value right now -- in light of the injuries that took place yesterday -- is probably higher than it's ever going to be.

But I still don't understand Boast -- why you would keep him as the #2. If you're thinking about how horrible Carr is -- yes -- I would have to agree with you. But Nate Davis would make a far better backup than Alex. We all know what we're getting with Alex. It's as plain as the writing in this thread.

In a perfect world? With no trade deadlines? -- I say we shop Alex and get what we can for him -- elevate Davis off the practice squad and push Carr down to "in case of emergency, break glass" option.

Nate Davis isn't ready to play, if he were, someone would have snapped him up when he was free. He is overhyped here.

Nate Davis has shown more in preseason play than ANY other 3rd string QB on anyone's roster. The crap that falls out of Singletary's mouth played a huge role in nobody claiming him. You're being foolish if you don't think someone would have snatched him up, if for nothing more than to ride the pine, based on talent alone if Singletary hadn't bashed him in the media and made him look like a lazy assh*le that is unwilling, not incapable, of learning. Of course, we now know that everything that comes out of Singletary's mouth is a load of horse sh*t so I don't believe a word he says about Nate or anyone else.

Nate isn't ready? Well, nobody's 3rd stringers are ready to play, either. That's why they're 3rd stringers. Unless, of course, you have a bunch of incompetent coaches that can't judge QB talent to save their lives (see: SF). We are the only team in the league to have more success with our 3rd string QBs than our starters (first Shaun Hill, now Troy Smith). Everyone else gets it right and their 3rd stringers are 3rd stringers for a reason: they're not ready. Think about that, then think about the upside and tremendous physical ability Nate Davis possesses and it's quite obvious Singletary is the reason Nate Davis is still on our practice squad. I don't know about you, but if my 3rd stringer isn't ready and another guy is available and had more upside and ability than the guy I have, I'm claiming the other guy - unless, of course, somebody gets in my ear and says something to persuade me not to do it.

To put it simple enough for anyone to understand: Nate Davis is no less ready than your average 3rd string QB in the league, but his abilities are higher than any of them. Anyone with half a brain that is willing to see the truth knows why Nate Davis hasn't been claimed. (For those that haven't figured it out, the answer is above)

You missed the point, he is not ready to be the backup like Bill was saying. All that long post for nothing...also I do not buy the conspiracy theory that all those teams passed on him because of what Singletary said. They passed on him because he is not what he was hyped to be. He just isn't what some on this board think he is whether it is because of a man crush or just thinking that his college performances mean anything at all now that he is in the pros. Bottom line, if he was as good as some think, he would never have cleared waivers.

It's easy to not see something you don't want to see, and not buy something you don't want to buy.

Sing may have no clue how to evaluate qb talent, but could all the other teams out there be so bad at judging talent too? There may be a reason he hasn't been claimed . . .

Yep, he's been made out to be a lazy, dumb QB that lacks work ethic. There's your reason.

As I said in my other post, take a look around the league and tell me how many 3rd stringers showed what Nate Davis did (against the same level of competition) in preseason. None. That being said, when a guy does better than your 3rd guy, you get him - unless you're persuaded otherwise - especially since you don't actually have to play them. There's no chance in hell at least one team wouldn't take Nate Davis and at least let him ride their bench after witnessing his physical abilities - preseason or not - without the bad-mouthing Singletary gave him in the media.

Absolutly 100% correct, I have been saying this ever since he was put on the practice squad. No team going into the season would go after a QB like Nate right before the start. When teams see the season is over he will be plucked off the PS. The other team will have patience and it will pay huge dividends. Remember this is the same staf who thought Carr was better than Hill.
The Nate Davis fanboyism never ceases to amaze me. Here we are 9 games into a 16 game season, with this slouch on the practice squad, and some people still think he has a legitimate shot to see the field this year.

Get over it. If he was any good, some team would have claimed him, either when he was waived or while he's been on the PS the whole season. But he hasn't, which speaks volumes to a guy of such "talent".
