The only part of this that I'd follow through on is releasing David Carr and elevating Nate Davis.
Leave Alex as the #2 the rest of the year. He's a FA next year anyway.
I personally like Nate Davis and wouldn't want to see a team activate him to their roster.
David Carr at this point serves absolutely no purpose.

Why?
Redrathman and Valrod are right. The trading deadline has passed. But if it hadn't -- we'd be foolish for not shopping Smith. The time is right to get something for him. His value right now -- in light of the injuries that took place yesterday -- is probably higher than it's ever going to be.
But I still don't understand Boast -- why you would keep him as the #2. If you're thinking about how horrible Carr is -- yes -- I would have to agree with you. But Nate Davis would make a far better backup than Alex. We all know what we're getting with Alex. It's as plain as the writing in this thread.
In a perfect world? With no trade deadlines? -- I say we shop Alex and get what we can for him -- elevate Davis off the practice squad and push Carr down to "in case of emergency, break glass" option.
You make absolutely no sense. We've all read your many posts stating how you think Alex sucks so who would want him then and why? You make him out to be a total loser and should be 3rd string on our team but yet he has trade value at the same time.
Nobody in the NFL agress with you that Nate Davis is a solid #2 cause if they did he would not have passed waivers. Too many teams need backups and guys who can step in but nobody picked him up but I'm sure you know much more that the rest of the league.

Nate Davis isn't ready to play, if he were, someone would have snapped him up when he was free. He is overhyped here.
Nate Davis has shown more in preseason play than ANY other 3rd string QB on anyone's roster. The crap that falls out of Singletary's mouth played a huge role in nobody claiming him. You're being foolish if you don't think someone would have snatched him up, if for nothing more than to ride the pine, based on talent alone if Singletary hadn't bashed him in the media and made him look like a lazy assh*le that is unwilling, not incapable, of learning. Of course, we now know that everything that comes out of Singletary's mouth is a load of horse sh*t so I don't believe a word he says about Nate or anyone else.
Nate isn't ready? Well, nobody's 3rd stringers are ready to play, either. That's why they're 3rd stringers. Unless, of course, you have a bunch of incompetent coaches that can't judge QB talent to save their lives (see: SF). We are the only team in the league to have more success with our 3rd string QBs than our starters (first Shaun Hill, now Troy Smith). Everyone else gets it right and their 3rd stringers are 3rd stringers for a reason: they're not ready. Think about that, then think about the upside and tremendous physical ability Nate Davis possesses and it's quite obvious Singletary is the reason Nate Davis is still on our practice squad. I don't know about you, but if my 3rd stringer isn't ready and another guy is available and had more upside and ability than the guy I have, I'm claiming the other guy - unless, of course, somebody gets in my ear and says something to persuade me not to do it.
To put it simple enough for anyone to understand: Nate Davis is no less ready than your average 3rd string QB in the league, but his abilities are higher than any of them. Anyone with half a brain that is willing to see the truth knows why Nate Davis hasn't been claimed. (For those that haven't figured it out, the answer is above)

Trade value? Carr is worthless, Alex Smith has a minor value as a back up.

You missed the point, he is not ready to be the backup like Bill was saying. All that long post for nothing...also I do not buy the conspiracy theory that all those teams passed on him because of what Singletary said. They passed on him because he is not what he was hyped to be. He just isn't what some on this board think he is whether it is because of a man crush or just thinking that his college performances mean anything at all now that he is in the pros. Bottom line, if he was as good as some think, he would never have cleared waivers.

Nate Davis is on the 49ers practice squad. Any team could claim him for their active roster if they wanted to. Nobody has claimed him. Say anything?
Sing may have no clue how to evaluate qb talent, but could all the other teams out there be so bad at judging talent too? There may be a reason he hasn't been claimed . . .

nobody snatched up troy smith either and hes a beast. nobody gave Vick a second chance and, well, just ask the redskins. nobody drafted tom brady til the 6th round, kurt warner was found bagging groceries... nobody can prove themselves until given a shot. Nate might be better than troy under the current circumstances. he was a dyslexic kid dealing with a mumbling, bumbling OC, im not surprised he didnt looks awesome, he didnt look bad either tho.
