Boone or Sims?

***Update*** Here's an indication of how popular young offensive tackles are: Denver waived Tyler Polumbus, an undrafted fee agent in 2008, on Wednesday. Three teams made claims for him, Detroit, Houston and Seattle. He landed with Detroit.

Polumbus did a decent job for Denver, and teams like his size and mobility. He moves better than Boone, and has been in the league a year longer. He's a fit for a zone-blocking scheme.

People are going too haywire over this. As if Boone would be the only OL among a multitude of other teams' final cuts... Teams would have to make space.

Sims certainly won't lose the battle to Boone. If Boone makes it -- and he has two games to show enough -- he'll have to heavily outplay Snyder.

OTC, I agree with you to some extent, but I think Boone is closer to making the roster then you give him credit for

Simms- played well on the left side last year but he played poorly on the right side the last time he was asked to do so. He has good experience, but he is not going to get any better.

Snyder- He’s a jack of all trades but master of none. He is going to make the team because of his versatility. In a perfect world he allows us to only carry one less interior linemen, and have another tackle that can play both sides that goes in the game first.

Boone- He is young, but not necessary “raw” anymore. He has played both sides in the preseason, and looked good at both. He has plenty of upside, but not as much as some on this board believe. He also comes at a cheaper price then Simms, which is another factor they will consider.

In the end I could easily see them deciding to move on with out Simms, but I wouldn’t be surprised either way

One thing in Boone's favor is that while he practiced at both tackle positions, I don't believe I've seen where Sims played both sides. Maybe that's a suggestion we'll keep 10 on the OL. Also, figuring who will be inactive on game day is difficult.
Guess:
1. N. Davis
2. Zeigler (or Williams if he's not healthy)
3. Boone
4. Heitmann (until he's healthy, then Snyder)
5. Brooks (until he's healthy, then Briggs or LaBoy)
6. RJF (at least against passing teams when we won't need 2 NTs)
7. Taylor
8. Adams (or James, depending on who makes the team)

I don't see how Snyder can be let go at least until Heitmann returns. Since Norris has limited ability on Special Teams I hope Sing goes with Miller or Caulcrick.

Sims has played on the right. He sucked!

But he's very good on the Left and you need a good reserve LT.
I'd prefer finding a way to keep Boone but I really don't care if he gets cut.

9/10 the guy never amounts to anything. Anyone remember when the board flipped out because we cut Marcus Maxwell.

There have been lots of injuries at the tackle position this preseason, plenty of teams would grab up either one, Boone would not last on the practice squad. Sims is not eligible for PS, so I say trade Sims, and keep Boone as a back-up. No choice really, Sims has more value and Boone can't be hidden of the roster this season, too many teams looking for tackles!

I do remember that . . . but I also remember how desperate for WR's we were at the time.
Boone, he is younger, plays both sides fairly well, and has more upside. This being said, I would rather keep both, but at the expence of whom?

The one key question is, if Staley were to go down, who would you rather want at LT? An unproven second-year player, or a proven veteran that was stellar filling in last year? I have to choose Sims in that scenario.

Both, keep 10 till Heitmann gets back

by that time they will have a better idea of who is expendible

If Baas plays well while Heitmann is out, Wragge may be the one cut

Exactly. And I'm hoping they all play good when that time comes so that it will be hard to decide which one gets cut. That would tell us that the depth is stronger than now. If we're lucky, we could get something in return...

Agree, but I dont want to see Snyder at any spot on the O line.
