From Matt Maiocco's reporting:
Notable: Quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson is getting his first taste of relaying the plays, via radio, to the quarterbacks. Last season, offensive assistant Jason Michael handled those duties because he and offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye worked together previously for three seasons with the New York Jets and Raiders. Raye said he is trying to figure out which system works best. Raye said he will likely decide which assistant will be on the radio hookup with himself and the quarterbacks after the second exhibition game.
Hope Johnson uses the opportunity to call his own plays instead, especially when the team has a slim lead in the 4th quarter and Raye is getting ready to call 3 run plays in a row.

Hoping he takes advantage, even if Raye is the one calling the plays at least Mike Johnson knows Alex the best so he may be able to offer some better suggestions than RB dive 3 times.
And if he excels, we have our replacement coordinator :)

I expect to see the same offense as last season, but one that executes with a much higher success rate. If that happens, I'll be satisfied. At the same time, if we open it up more, I'll also be thrilled.

I saw Matt Barrows interview on warriors world tv and it was the first time I really heard the comments that the offense may have suffered from the inept play calling and coaching decisions. In other words the blocking etc may have suffered by lousy plays where teams were knowing what was going to happen. Whether that was due to incompetence or sheer stubborness to stick to Singletary's view of the offense is debateable but it starts to illuminate why the coach Johnson thing and Alex Smith calling plays and Ginn. I suspect they may try more of the surprise em with the jock straps down approach. The apparant lack of discussion by the niners to those questions may have fooled many like myself but now it seems they are working to address those areas.

ya sure, going above the OCs head to call your own plays is the best way to show how much of a professional you are
