Is Ted Lelie another Ashley Ginn?

Ok, I admit when we had Lelie, I thought he had the potential to be a starter and even our #1 at the time. There was a split on the board. Alot of people liked him and wanted him to get his shot, or others hated him and thought he sucked and was a waste of roster space.

Lets look at both of them. Both 1st round picks. Both had alot of hype. Both are burners. Why we never tried Lelie out on kick and punt returns was a mystery to me.

Lelie had that 1 good year in Denver, but Ginn never had that year. Will he have it wearing the red and gold? Some may venture to say that even if he gets on the field we can have him blaze down the field as a decoy. If they leave him open, let Alex hit him for a large gain or even a TD to keep other defenses honest.

So do you guys think Ginn will work out better than the Lelie project or is his fate similar?
Na, Ginn is considered a DYNAMIC kick returner with wr ability. I believe he has more potential than Lelie.

Is your Dyslexia acting up? You're title is all over the map.

But seriously, Lelie was a product of our stupid WR coach. Until he's sh@tcanned, nobody can answer this. How can any one man ride the coattails of one Receiving Corps as long as this chump. Can someone get me the make and model of his ride? I need to go do some mechanical work on his brake lines.

Sullivan has to go IMHO.

Lelie was a one trick pony. A super poor mans Randy Moss. Just throw it deep. Ginn however can play all over the field and is a better route runner than Lelie. Ginn`s more compact frame allows him to get in and out of his breaks much faster than the long lanky frame of Lelie. Ginn is much more versatile and should be a great compliment to our WR corps.
I think he will be better because even if Ginn cant pan out as a WR he is still a pro bowl caliber KR/PR

Stay on topic, we have beaten the Sully topic to death and not one person on this board could make a concise argument why he should go. If you want to turn this into a Sully discussion then use the search function if not keep things on topic.

I don't think Lelie was a top 10 pick.
Well, I think they will be different because we will have different expectations out of them. When we signed Lelie, we needed a legitimate receiver badly because we did not truly have one NFL-caliber starting receiver and we (desperately) hoped that Lelie could be that guy.

With Ted Ginn, our starting receivers are actually settled and he was specifically brought in to be a returner. Yes, Crabtree and Morgan are young and somewhat unproven, but I think most agree that they can be legitimate receiving threats (and in Crabtrees case, maybe even a lot more) and it is pretty clear that those two will be our starting receivers going into the season.

That means if Ted Ginn shows any skills as a receiver with us, thats great and an added bonus, but all he needs to be for us is a complimentary role, not the main receiving threat. All he needs to do for us is being a good returner and he has shown that he can be at least a solid NFL return guy and possibly even more.

So the similarities between Ginn and Lelie are that they are both former first-round picks, who have disappointed so far in their careers regarding their draft status. But the big difference is that we have very different expectations from both guys:

We hoped for some big things from Lelie as a receiver because we had nobody at WR and he could not deliver.

From Ginn, we only need to get a solid return game from him to reach expectations; anything he shows as a receiver is a bonus.

In the end I guess Ted Ginn will not be another Ashley Lelie: We brought them in for different reasons and had different expectations for them, so the situation with Ginn will not pan out the way it did with Lelie.
Lelie - I was upset the coaches couldn't get him on the field. But then he hasn't done jack since he left the 49ers, so maybe it wasn't the coaches fault. He isn't even in the league right?

The idea of a burner going long all the time is totally bogus -- if the guy can't catch the darn ball consistently, the defense doesn't honor the route much anyway. Besides, after 5-6 long routes, the receivers aren't as fast as they were at the begining of the game - threat minimized. In other words, a productive 11th player (even a slower threat) is so much more useful to the game plan than a burner who can't catch consistently.

Oh - and have to agree, Sullivan is over-rated. I just hope he pulls off a miracle with Crabtree and Morgan this year to prove me wrong.

19th pick isn't to shabby.
Lelie was a good WR he was just not used correctly because we didn't have a good OC.

Now that we have a Raye one of the best OC's in the NFL Im sure we can use Ginn correctly.

I have to agree with this. And also I don't think Lelie was given as much of a chance on the field to make a true judgment on him. Shoot, Lelie runs one bad route (against Pittsburgh) and the Zone was ready to crucify him. We had Jim Hostler when Lelie was here, I think he would've benefited more with Norv Turner or Mike Martz and even Jimmy Raye as the OC.

On top of that McCloughan signs Brandon freaking Jones.

But back on topic, I don't think Ginn Jr. will be as one dimensional as Lelie was thought to be. Ginn Jr. can run as much or more routes than most receivers on our team, he just has to learn to catch.

Title of this thread=FAIL!!

It's Ted ginn and Ashley lelie.

And no ginn will actually contribute more than warming the bench.

Joke went over your head lol

lelie was expected to be a starter
ginn is expected to be #4 at most behind Crabtree, Morgan and Hill.

As long as he does a good job returning I'm happy
