I don't think he needs monster numbers in sacks. What is the difference between a 7 sac guy and a 12 sack guy when it comes to a team's wins and losses? I say not much. While it's possible one of those extra 5 sacks could have an effect on the outcome of one game (especially if it created a turnover) it's not probable. Especially if the guy that gets those extra 5 sacks is not as good as Manny at everything else, which is more than probable. I wouldn't give up all that Manny brings to the team for an extra few sacks on a season.

I wouldn't mind having Lawson back..but we need to focus on re-signing Vernon Davis.
he's not holding out, he just doesnt want to get hurt at non mandatory non padded practice

Not to start another argument about this but would people be happy if Alex Smith was doing this?

Interesting point, I doubt anyone says he is doing what's best for him. People would say get in there and earn it!!!

Why even ask that? No one is saying they are happy about it. Just that it's not as big of a deal at this point that people are making it out to be and that Manny has not said a thing about being unhappy or that he is holding out.
It's ALL hearsay.

But people are making excuses for him and acting like it's not a big deal. Granted it's not the end of the world but my question is still valid. If Smith decided he was going to miss because he doesn't have a long term contract and is scared of injuring himself people would bash the hell out of him.

Odd strategy,
since he cant really demand a big contract from what he's done on the field
He should be focused on having a great season, and then getting big bucks as a free agent, weather it be with us or another team
Manny probably just wants to remain a Niner and get an extention
but I think Vern and Franklin are up next

could almost be seen as a lack in confidence. Brooks already sat him on third down last year, now Laboys on board. competition's gonna be good at the outside Lb spot this summer. probably wants to stay in Frisco, so why not try to get the extention just in case he gets beat out of his spot. He's a good player, solid. not bad, not great but he is a repleceable piece and i don't see the FO paying more than he's worth

he is arguably the best coverage 3-4 OLB in the league, amazing considering he was a converted DE, and if you ever actually watch games, he is an absolute terror in run defense, and is one of the reasons we are so good against the run...he is constantly forcing backs back inside.
go watch some "tape" as some of you guys like to pretend you do.
read my post a couple up, i think we just said the same thing.
to actually knowing how defense works
The problem is, people like yourselves act as if nobody else can come in and force runners to the inside. As if Manny Lawson is irreplaceable. He can't rush the damn QB, and guess where the pass rush is supposed to come from in a 3-4 defense? That's right, OLB. PASS RUSH IS THE MAIN ASSIGNMENT OF A 3-4 OUTSIDE LINEBACKER! Saying they don't use him that often to do so is not an excuse for him because of the REASON they don't use him to do so: HE CAN'T DO IT. His speed doesn't help him get around the tackles and RBs that continuously pick up his blitzes and once he gets engaged in a block, he's OUT OF THE PLAY COMPLETELY. His pass coverage skills are commendable, but pass coverage is not what an OLB is expected to be good at. If he was actually good at doing what his job entails, we might not need a coverage OLB!
That's not true in the 49ers scheme. The Steelers may operate under this thinking with Woodley and Harrison, but they rely heavily on their middle backers in pass coverage. It's clear that Manny fills a specific role and he does it well within the scheme. The strong side OLB is supposed to engage (read: chuck) the TE to slow up the timing route. He will then stick with him in a man coverage, or cover curl-to-flat in a zone. The weakside OLB is a primary pass rusher. I don't see why everyone is so up in arms about this guy.
