some of you guys get too caught up on how he isnt a hugely productive pass rusher..when he isn't even used as such that often...
he is arguably the best coverage 3-4 OLB in the league, amazing considering he was a converted DE, and if you ever actually watch games, he is an absolute terror in run defense, and is one of the reasons we are so good against the run...he is constantly forcing backs back inside.
go watch some "tape" as some of you guys like to pretend you do.
The best covergae OLB in the league gets taken out on passing downs...
rotfl]
rotfl]
rotfl]
getting replaced by a defensive back..not another linebacker....you've got to be kidding me..
how many of you just showed your football ignorance..

NOTE: how i also mentioned 3-4 OLB..there are better 4-3 coverage OLB's in the league, however these guys would more than likely play inside in the 3-4
he gets taken out for Brooks who is NOT a defensive back. Takeo Spikes is the one gets taken out for a DB. We are not the one who showed our football ignorance
Firstly, was it necessary to post the ROFL faces twice? Were you just fluffing yoru post count?
Secondly why are u laughing on the floor? You just stated he gets taken out by Brooks who plays with his hand on the ground on 3rd down. So brooks isn't dropping into coverage either. He gets replaced for pass rushing on 3rd downs not pass coverage.
If he was the best pass coverage OLB in the league im sure they would find a way to keep in on 3rd downs
I don't personally believe that he's the best or even average coverage LB, but I did have a problem with how it was being misrepresented. He gets taken out on passing downs because he lacks pass rushing not because of his coverage skills. On top of that the rotation keeps both him and brooks fresh which gives a better result.

You are right - if LaBoy plays well and becomes an every-down SAM or WILL, then it will really be interesting to see what happens.
Good luck on the move!
One quick thing before I take off. According to them our pass rush and total defense are top ten.

In the famous words of Nolan, "Collectively speaking...blah blah blah."
Hahaha.

I certainly don't use their site for their "grading system" b/c nobody can really figure it out but I do trust their player stat lines where they review every single player on every single down. They tend to be way more accurate then NFL.com's "official stats" which are usually way off (see past, Derek Smith+ total tackles).

All this trade talk is retarded, he is a starter and should be paid accordingly. He is getting paid backup money right now, just pay him the same as a middle of the pack LB and be done with it.
According to Maiocco the Niners tried to trade Lawson on draft day for a 2nd rd pick but no teams were interested.

Per MM
LB Manny Lawson. Lawson is underrated. He had a very good year last year, and he's better at setting edge in the run game than you'd think a lanky linebacker who has struggled to reach 250 pounds would be. The 49ers' defense is predicated on taking away the big, back-breaking play and making sure linebackers clean up anything underneath. Lawson is fast and excels at chasing down ball carriers. But he's not an elite pass rusher, and more than that, he gets replaced by Ahmad Brooks on third downs. As I've been writing for a while now, Lawson wants a contract extension and that's why he's been missing from voluntary OTAs. He's certainly valuable to the 49ers, but with the team's resources headed elsewhere, he likely will find more money on the open market.

Yes, while he is good in coverage, that hardly warrants a pay raise. How many OLB's that are below average pass rushers (which is their primary responsibility btw), but good in coverage are making top dollar? I'll answer that for you:
You don't know that he is "holding out" for money or anything else. He hasn't said a word about it nor has he missed a mandatory team anything.
No one said anything about "top dollar" either. But if you want to talk about it we had one of our own, Julien Peterson who we FRANCHISED, paying him top dollar to retain, two years after his best year for sacks, which was just 7 total. Of his other 6 years with the 9ers he never had more than 4 sacks but Seattle sure as hell paid him top dollar to get him from us.

And why? Because finding an OLB with good coverage abilities isn't exactly hard.
Uh, what? Yes it is. That is the most uncommon skill for OLBs like that.

I meant post draft trade talk, as in a future draft pick.

I could see a 4-3 team giving us a fifth but not a 2nd. No way. Good for the Niners for trying to trade his ass. Get ready for Brooks starting and LaBoy taking more snaps! Let's call it a hunch...

If Manny Lawson doesn't show up for mandatory functions what happens to him financially?
Matt Maiocco
He would be subject to fine ... and he would get much deeper into the head coach's doghouse.
Is this assuming he is already in the dog house? Like I said before, this strategy may end up working against him b/c Singletary is already pulling for Brooks and we also have a former starter in LaBoy. Long and Briggs may add something as well.

i dont think he is in the doghouse, he just isnt being given the starting job and will have to battle 2 players who make more than him this year.....we havent had this scenario for a while but as this team gets deeper and better we are gonna have some guys go, its kinda the only bad side to this whole competition at every position thing
