Last season we had the worst right tackle in the NFL. This is bad because Smith likes to roll to his right. This was not a good combination. Now that we have, I hope, improved our RT situation we may see Smith do lots better!

How much more does the offense need to be opened up? , last season was the most I've ever seen a 49er QB in the shotgun formation, I know we did it out of desperation to get the offense moving.

Next year I'm hoping to see Alex under center a lot more and the shotgun used sparringly, we need to establish the run and develop our passing attack out of the base packages of I-Formations and Split backfields, we need to get back to 49er football and utilize all of our weapons in the short passing game and earn YAC, the shotgun limits what we can do in the running game and makes our passing attack predictable, just because we plan on being a power running team doesnt mean we cant bring back elements of the walsh offense, it's who we are and we cant forget our roots, so with that said I would like to see a combination of three/four WR Sets and a good amount of WCO plays to keep our offense fresh and deadly

I agree with your overall view. But the Niners' roots isn't the West Coast Offense. You might as well say the roots is the Alley-Oop.

I HOPE that this is not true in the future. I hope that Sing allows Raye to operate an offense that’s more creative than last year’s three yards and a cloud of dust. It’s true that with our new front five, Davis, and Walker we may be able to kick some serious butt and “Impose our will,” but wouldn’t it be incredible if we would switch in and out, during a game, from the run down their throat mode to an offense that uses Crabtree, Morgan, Ginn, and Davis in a form of the spread offense? As the coaches have said “Ginn can take the lid off the defense.” IF Raye can be creative in the play calling and formations we run, we have the talent, I think, to play smash mouth football AND have a high caliber passing attack. Although Walsh was/is thought of as a “passing” offensive genius, many don’t realize that except for the 1981 season, all the successful Walsh teams had great running attacks. I hope Sing realizes this and doesn’t try to run an offense that is twenty years in the past. Last year Sing and Raye said they wanted to run the ball 60 percent of the time. If they still have that as a goal for next season, we will be lucky to be 8-8 again.
If Sing tries to run his stated dream offense, this next year could be his last.

I just don't get why people are so hung up on this.

Did I miss something or did the 49ers on the fly during the season go from primarily a run based offense to primarily a shotgun-spread to something of a mix all while changing QBs, having their rookie #1 receiver miss all of TC and the first 5 games of the season while throwing the ball 528 times versus running it 371 times?

For all of the angst over the conservative offense, Singletary and Raye have shown they will do what works best. Yes, Singletary wants balance and that's what this year's draft was aimed at, not to mention giving Smith better protection. If everything goes as planned, they will run the ball more since they won't be behind and the OL will be providing a better push. That will also put them in more manageable 2nd and 3rd downs, which will help Smith and the passing game. You should want them to be more balanced. I doubt they will get to a 60/40 run/pass ratio but something in the neighborhood of 52/48 would probably mean the offense is being much more efficient and effective.

Who's going to trow the ball though? I hope Alex improves and it's hard to believe that he wont; but, when your starting QB has more turnovers than TDs, I'm not sure you give him a whole lot of rope that he could use to hang the team. I know he had his best season ever last year and has done enough to be our off-season starter. I'm just not ready to give him more control with the O yet.

Maybe once he increases the TD to Turnover ratio I would be more comfortable with this...

He did have an 18:12 TD to INT ratio last year in 10.5 games. That's a start at least...

I'm really not trying to bash the guy. I'm just keeping it real.

If you look at the pass attempts vs the # of Int's, it shows that Alex isn't ready for us to open it up. I did a small calculation of how many attempts a qb made per each interception. Here's Alex's numbers and other QB's around the same 12 int range (12-15 is where I drew the line).

# of attempts divided by # of ints = X (The higher the number "X" the better)

31 Alex Smith 372/12 = 31
34 Jason Campbell 507/15 = 34
36 Carson Palmer 466/13 = 36
45 Kyle Orton 541/12 = 45
21 Chad Henne 241/12 = 21
42 Joe Flacco 499/12 = 42
36 Eli Manning 509/14 = 36

Please note that I left out some of the NFL's better QB's like:
Ben Rothlesraper 42
Tom Bradey 43
Drew Brees 47
etc...

As you can see, the only guy that was in that 12 int range that did worse was Chad Henne. Now, I've always said that I hope the kid improves; but, lets not put the cart before the horse here. Lets let Alex show us that he's capable of more before we throw the season away by forcing him to do something that could hurt the team...

This draft was a statement, it said, we will run between the tackles when ever we want! And we want that a lot!

Sing and Raye came out running last season, and when that failed they "opened up" the offense to salvage the season and there jobs. This draft shows how little they liked opening things up!

I don't like this draft, I don't like this coaching staff, I don't like this offensive style, but I HOPE LIKE HELL IT WORKS!

we are not going to be a run only team. hes just trying to boost the run game itself.
we are going to run when we need to, and throw it when we need to. he wants balance.
got it dude!!!
Dude,
When last season started Sing AND Raye said they wanted to tun the ball 60 percent of the time. Does this sound like balance to you Dude?

Did they actually run it 60% of the time.

we just didnt draft these 2 giant o linemen to run but also to pass protect alex smith will be a different qb with actual time to throw to crabtree morgan ginn davis gore a big difference when its 2nd and five,or four instead of 2nd and 9 or 10 we have the recievers to open up this offense add hill williams and jones to the mix we are going to have a good recieving core spread em out and run with gore and dixon we are going to be an explosive offense, but when we need to run the ball to run out the game clock we are going to run it out not like last year in seattle, indy or minn

I don't get why this is so hard to understand. This 'run first' or 'power-running' crap are words put in Sing's mouth by the media and most everyone is buying into it.

Sing/Raye were touting the whole smashmouth thing right from the start.

Sing hired the only OC who would believed in that system and would run it.

Right from the start the team ran the smashmouth and stayed with it for several games.

Sing talked smashmouth, played smashmouth and he stayed with smashmouth for quite some time. I don't think even his most ardent supporters would deny this and I don't understand why anyone would say it was made up, that none of this happened.

Nobody, not even the evil media that sometimes needs to be killed for delivering news you don't like, made this up or put words into anyone's mouth.
