What does your 53 man roster+practice squad look like?

I think that's why they drafted Dixon even though we have Coffee. Rob can't get it done as a RB. Once Gore was out, our run game tanked because Coffee wasn't doin good, and Rob just isnt an RB.

So, if you have read my previous posts, you know that I love speculating on the roster. As we continue forward in this crucial offseason, I thought I would try to narrow the field down again. Here is my take on what the 53 man roster will look like for week one:

Offense: (Normally 25 players)

QB (3):
Alex Smith, David Carr, Nate Davis - Jarrett Brown will most likely earn a spot on the practice squad.

WR (5):
Michael Crabtree, Josh Morgan, Ted Ginn, Jason Hill, Kyle Williams - I predict that the team will cut ties with Brandon Jones. They can absorb his contract this year and save money for the next CBA. Williams will be a candidate for punt returner which gives him the edge over Jones, especially if Ginn keeps showing that he is more than just a returner.

RB (5):
Frank Gore, Glen Coffee, Anthony Dixon, Michael Robinson, Moran Norris - Robinson will face some competition from Jehuu Caulcrick, but in the end I believe Caulcrick will be put on the practice squad as insurance for Norris. Many are calling for Norris' head, but the improved OL will make his job much easier. Brit Miller is definitely a wildcard in this race.

TE (3):
Vernon Davis, Delanie Walker, Nate Byham - Byham is the only real question mark. He could be the next Bear Pascoe, but it sounds like they like his ability to line up in the backfield as well as blocking TE.

OL (9):
Joe Staley, Mike Iupati, Eric Heitmann, Chilo Rachal, Anthony Davis, Barry Sims, David Baas, Cody Wallace, Alex Boone - The two big cuts here are Tony Wragge and Adam Snyder. I like both players, but it's time to say goodbye. Snyder's versatility is nice to have, but Boone's upside and renewed commitment are hard to ignore. Wallace takes over for Wragge as the back-up center. It's time for this kid to show up. Wragge is no longer needed with Baas on the bench to back up both guard spots.

Defense: (Normally 25)

DL (6):
Justin Smith, Aubrayo Franklin, Isaac Sopoaga, Ray McDonald, Ricky Jean-Francois, Kentwan Balmer - I only kept six players here because of the need in the other two units. This could change drastically if Balmer isn't healthy enough at the beginning of training camp. Demetric Evans is the last man out, but he was unspectacular in limited duty last year. The big question mark is who will be Franklin's back-up? They are giving RJF a shot, but Balmer will certainly have his chance when his shoulder heals. Sopoaga has the size, but has stated his preference for LDE. Khalif Mitchell seems to be on the rise a bit, but the team may try to stash him on the practice squad for one more year of development.

LB (9):
Parys Haralson, Takeo Spikes, Patrick Willis, Manny Lawson, Ahmed Brooks, Scott McKillop, Navorro Bowman, Travis Laboy, Diyral Briggs - Matt Wilhelm knows Manusky's system well, but he would probably be available as a mid-season pick-up so cutting him makes sense. Briggs has really impressed the coaches and plays well on special teams, so I think he gets a shot. Plus, our OLB rotation has some holes in it, so it doesn't hurt to have some insurance.

DB (10):
Nate Clements, Shawntae Spencer, Dashon Goldson, Michael Lewis, Reggie Smith, Taylor Mays, Tarell Brown, Karl Paymah, LeRoy Vann, Free Agent - Since this is our weakest area, it makes sense to carry the most bodies. I believe Clements will have a strong bounce back year and Spencer will continue to be a steady force. Brown is an effective nickel-back, but Paymah will have his chance as well. The team will need to add another veteran for insurance. Many, including myself, want the team to go after Bly, but he may still be holding out hope for a multi-year deal, so the team is sniffing around serviceable veterans like Will James. Walt Harris might be an option, but he is still recovering from the knee injury and might not be able to bounce back at his age. Still, Harris was a solid starter for the last few years and might be able to help part-time. Rookies Phillip Adams and Patrick Stoudamire will likely battle for a practice squad spot. Keeping Vann was the tough decision. It looks like the team will use either him or Williams as the punt returner, and Vann is certainly the more exploosive of the two. I think he will earn a spot in this group as a specialist, especially if vets like Clements and Brown have strong camps.

ST: (3)

Kicker: Joe Nedney

Long Snapper: Brian Jennings

Punter: Andy Lee

- This group is one of the strongest trios in the business. The team should be ready to find Nedney's replacement soon, but he is still plenty accurate.

So, tell me what you think, and where you feel I have erred. I will do several more of these as the summer wears on.

looks pretty good, bang on with 6 d-lineman, they dont need anymore, when they go to a 4 man front on 3rd downs guys like haralson lawson and brooks become d-lineman

Yeah, I hesitated there for a moment. I would be more confident if they had a true back-up for Franklin. My hope is that either RJF or Balmer can assert himself in the rotation (preferably both!)

Well, it looks like Will James will have the first crack at the final DB spot on the roster. I wouldn't be suprised if the team kept Curtis Taylor instead. Reggie Smith has the ability to play CB, plus the team usually goes with a third safety on the field in dime situations. I really hope I'm right about Clements having a big bounce back year!

I agree with most of your depth chart however, I would rather have Wragge or Snyder over Wallace. I think now is the time to cut our losses with him. I also am not a fan of Vann. I think Rossum was a better RS to keep on the team because he could play defensive ST as well as he had some NFL starts at corner under his belt. Vann would be a total luxury roster spot and as soon as 1 person goes down with an injury he would be cut. I am still hoping that some other veteran corners get cut especially with the amount of corners drafted in this years draft or Bly or Harris sign for the vet minimum because we really need depth there. Other than that I agree with the rest of your roster unless an UDFA balls in the preseason.

Wragge and Wallace will have to fight for a roster spot, as they are the only guys on the bench that have played the center position in practice. (Baas was a center in college, but he hasn't lined up there in the pros.) Either Wragge or Wallace will make it, and I said Wallace just as a guess. We haven't seen him to judge his play, so it is a total guess.

Snyder would be booted by Boone (Alliteration anyone?) Boone is coming on strong this year and I think it is time to dump Snyder. I like the guy, but he has proven to be inneffective when called upon for long stretches. Boone might not be able to play OG yet, but he might have surpassed Snyder at OT and that is what is important.

I get your point about Vann, but the team might not consider PR such a luxury. That position cost the team at least one game and they don't want that to happen again. If Vann changess the field position battle in a few games, it is worth it. Besides, he might be small, but he still might be able to play on the coverage team. He was a college CB and has some nice hits in his highlight package. Even if he is a luxury, it would be nice to have a player with his electric abilities.
