I think that's 52 but I'm not sure about carrying 4 backs or whether Vann makes it. I initially thought we drafted Williams for his punt return skills, we'll see during preseason whether Vann proves he's worthy.

And some guys may be listed in a spot where they don't play, for instance, I have no clue wtf Balmer does.

vann is a bedtter pr... check the records

I see Dixon replacing Norris as the starting FB. Norris is cut in favor of Caulcrick or Miller. Jones should beat out Hill. I don't see Byham making the cut. I think they'll bring in Boone on short yardage. Wragge will be cut (unless Baas is traded which I prefer).

RJF doesn't make the cut. And I don't see why a 5th safety survives. C. Taylor doesn't make the 53. I think the Niners will have Clements, Spencer, Paymah, Brown, Vann and P. Adams at CB (Vann may be their best punt returner but not sure they can afford another one-trick pony like Brian Jennings).

Sorry Frankie G but I'd like to see Miller or Caulcrick beat out Norris. I'd also like to see Briggs take a front 7 spot away from Evans so that Balmer gets more PT, but Briggs probably has practice squad eligibility so that's unlikely to happen.

The last two DB spots are probably the most wide open on the entire roster, depending on whether we re-sign Bly and/or Harris. If not, then I count 6 guys competing for those last two spots: Paymah, Taylor, Keith Smith, Philip Adams, Maragos, Vann.

Also I think Boone is in play to beat out Snyder (whose versatility is devalued since Baas/Wragge can each cover all 3 interior positions) if he really has gotten his head on straight and improves dramatically.

QB-Smith/Carr/Davis (3)
HB-Gore/Coffee/Dixon/Robinson (4)
FB-Norris (hopefully they replace him) (1)
WR-Crabtree/Morgan/Hill/Ginn/Jones/Williams (6)
TE-Davis/Walker/Byham (3)
C-Heitmann/Wallace (2)
OT-Staley/Davis/Sims (3)
OG-Iutapi/Rachal/Baas (3)
DT-Franklin/**Yet to be signed player** (2)
DE-J.Smith/Soapaga/Balmer/McDonald/RJF (maybe backup NT) (5)
ILB-Willis/Spikes/Bowman/Wilhelm (4)
OLB-Lawson/Haralson/Brooks/Laboy/Briggs (5)
CB-Clements/Spencer/Brown/Vann/**Bly (re-signed shortly)/**Yet to be signed player** (6)
S-Goldston/Lewis/Mays/R.Smith (4)
Specialis-K-Nedney/P-Lee/LS-Jennings (3)

Practice Squad (not sure how many players so i'm stopping at 10?)
S-C.Taylor
ILB-S.McKillop
DT/OT-K.Mitchell
CB-P.Adams
OT-A.Boone
QB-J.Brown
CB-T.Brock
WR-D.Zeigler (when is he out of PS eligability?)
S-C.Maragos
LB-M.Baladon

I listed 54 on the roster because I can't decide who is going to stay and who will go at WR. I look at Crabtree/Morgan/Ginn as locks Jones may be a lock due to his contract just can't decide right now.

If you consider who is going to be active on game day, your ideas about who makes the 53 might change. For instance, Snyder's ability to play both OG and OT puts him in a good spot while another player, probably Boone or Wragge. would be inactive anyway on game day.

I was too lazy to type it all up, but this was exactly what I was thinking.

I don't know why everyone is humping Vann's leg. Yes he is a record holder, but that doesn't mean much in the NFL. He is undersized, too slow, and one-dimensional player. There was a reason he went undrafted.

Then hopefully Ginn and Williams can handle the punt returns better than Vann can.

Well seeing that teams are now releasing older vets and unmotivated players (so to speak). I wonder what handful of players will be released from the 9ers???

I think that we will should keep 4 safeties, not 5, but Lewis concussions are a big question mark, so you could be right. The niners will try Mays as soon as possible, Lewis is almost done.

The roster is good, but the secondary is very weak; at least a FA CB will be signed in June. The OL has great upside, but a lot of open questions, too.

This season has a lot of promise, but I'm a little worried by CB/S and OL. We'll see.
