i think both d.evans and c.taylor have a better chance of making the 53 than vann,
but i agree on everything else pretty much.

I'll take a wild guess and say Curtis Taylor doesn't make it, and Vann and Briggs do.
Can he still be on the PS?

i think he can, BUT, i have a hard time thinking we should keep m.lewis AND t.mays on the roster... do you really want 2 in-the-box safeties who cant cover on your roster?
we definitely keep goldson, r.smith and t.mays (3 very young players) you need a guy in that unit to mentor them on the practice field and in the film room. the coaches value m.roman's knowledge a great deal so it could be him. m.lewis sustained 3 concussions in 4 weeks last year so that's a BIG knock on him... what if he sustains another one in TC? he has to be DANGER close to retirement with that. what is his salary? if he goes one concussion and retirement before the season even starts, how many million will that cost us? all things that need to be considered.

I was too lazy to type it all up, but this was exactly what I was thinking.
I don't know why everyone is humping Vann's leg. Yes he is a record holder, but that doesn't mean much in the NFL. He is undersized, too slow, and one-dimensional player. There was a reason he went undrafted.
Then hopefully Ginn and Williams can handle the punt returns better than Vann can.
I Expect Ginn to handle the punt returns. He avg 9.6yrds his rookie year when he handled the punts. Then Bess came in and avg 11 yrds. For perspective, last year only 12 players were above 9.6 average returns that had 20 or more returns. And of those 12, only the following are used purely as return man on the roster:
Quan Cosby, Cin
Darius Reynaud, Min
Eric Weems, Atl, PRIMARY KICK RETURNER
Clifton Smith, TB, PRIMARY KICK RETURNER
So people are expecting Vann to fill the role ONLY TWO PLAYERS IN THE LEAGUE do, just fill the role a Punt Returner with no other value to the team and be better then Ginn.
So my point is, Vann doesn't need to be better then Ginn/Williams,
he needs to be significantly better. Because only Cosby and Reynaud have roster spots for just PR.

Like the fact that you have Williams making the team. Boone could also surprise people (according to Barrows he is one to watch)

If he can be placed on the PS, why bother having him on the active roster when you can call him up at any time? That's the simplicity of it all. Taylor is not so valuable that he needs to make the final cut, especially with Reggie Smith being a DB tweener.
If Taylor gets picked up, there are many others just as good to fill his ST's role he had in the limited action he saw.

Ok, as of April 27th 2010 we have 79 players on the team, that even includes Bruce, who has yet to be cut or retired. So in a sense we have 2 spots open for TC, I wont list all players, just check out my thread at the top.
Now onto my 53 man team I wanna see, might not happen, but this is my ideal roster.
QB: Alex Smith, David Carr, Nate Davis
RB: Frank Gore, Glen Coffee, Anthony Dixon
FB: Moran Norris, Michael Robinson
WR: Michael Crabtree, Brandon Jones, LeRoy Vann
WR: Josh Morgan, Ted Ginn Jr. , Kyle Williams
TE: Vernon Davis, Delanie Walker, Nate Byham
C: Eric Heitmann, David Baas
OG: Mike Iupati, Chilo Rachal, Adam Snyder
OT: Anthony Davis, Joe Staley, Barry Sims
Im torn between the extra OL, whether it be a G like Wragge or a T like Boone, Wragge has more versatlitiy, being a G and C, and we would have Snyder who can play Guard, And Im not 100% on Boone.
DE: Justin Smith, Isaac Sopoaga, Ray McDonald, Demetric Evans
NT: Aubrayo Franklin, Kenwtan Balmer, Ricky Jean-Francois
OLB: Ahmad Brooks, Manny Lawson, Parys Haralson, Travis LaBoy
ILB: Patrick Willis, Takeo Spikes, Navorro Bowman, Scott McKillop, Matt Wilhelm
CB: Nate Clements, Shawntae Spencer, Tarell Brown, Karl Paymah
S: Dashon Goldson, Michael Lewis, Taylor Mays, Reggie Smith
K: Joe Nedney
P: Andy Lee
LS: Brian Jennings
Thats 52, with being unsure of who to be the 9th OL.

um yah... thanks for that. i really dont see m.lewis making the team. that is close to what the price is to franchise a safety (6.2, i think) is it possible that one more concussion he retires and we'd end up owing him all 5 mill after only say
one or two games? that just doesnt sound like a good business decision.
maybe he will be a june 1st casualty? dont really know too much about that stuff.

just one scenario, and i can see it happening IF they see him as someone with some upside. we've lost guys off the PS several times in recent years. they may
see him as the ideal backup to t.mays if not in 2010, then maybe 2011 and beyond.
they may see our 2011 safeties as:
FS:: goldson/r.smith
SS:: t.mays/c.taylor
by 2011 there will be no need for a 'vet' cuz goldson will be the vet by then.
maybe that's looking too far into the future, but guaranteed somebody in the
organization is looking that far and beyond.
teams like to have safeties (more so than CBs) that are experienced in their system cuz they
kind of QB the secondary. if you got a guy you think will project well to that role,
even if it is just a backup you want to hang on to him if you can.

Offense: 25
QB: Alex Smith, David Carr, Nate Davis
RB: Frank Gore, Anthony Dixon, Glen Coffee
FB: Brit Miller, Michael Robinson
WR: Michael Crabtree, Brandon Jones
WR: Josh Morgan, Ted Ginn Jr. (ST), Kyle Williams (ST)
TE: Vernon Davis, Nate Byham, Delanie Walker
C: Eric Heitmann, David Baas
OG: Mike Iupati, Chilo Rachal, Adam Snyder
OT: Anthony Davis, Joe Staley, Barry Sims, Alex Boone
Note: Brit Miller is the surprise starter here. The two surprise cuts are Moran Norris (age 31) and Jason Hill (coach hates him) as well as Tony Wragge (age 30), Brian De La Puente (no upgrade) and Dominique Zeigler (no PR skills).
Some may choose Tony Wragge (age 30) over Kyle Williams (PR/KR); tough call between these two
Defense: 25
DE: Justin Smith, Isaac Sopoaga, Ray McDonald, Kentwan Balmer
NT: Aubrayo Franklin, Khalif Mitchell
OLB: Ahmad Brooks (SAM), Parys Haralson (WILL), Manny Lawson, Travis LaBoy
ILB: Patrick Willis, Takeo Spikes, Navorro Bowman, Scott McKillop, Matt Wilhelm
CB: Shawntae Spencer, Nate Clements, Dre Bly, Tarell Brown, Walt Harris, LeRoy Vann (ST)
S: Dashon Goldson (FS), Michael Lewis (SS), Reggie Smith, Taylor Mays
Note: The surprise here is that Brooks starts for Lawson at SAM d/t a contract dispute. Team contends he's only a 1st and 2nd down SAM only now esp. with the signing of Brooks (2 years) and LaBoy (experience at both SAM & WILL).
We resign Dre Bly and Walt Harris (proves healthy or a surprise such as Phillip Adams makes the team) and cut Demetric Evans (age 30) or we maintain only one of these aforementioned CB's and retain Demetric Evans. Also, Diyral Briggs (d/t LaBoy) is cut as is Curtis Taylor (d/t Mays) and Ricky Jean Francois (3 players can play NT).
Walt Harris is the wild card here b/c of his age and injury and the team may want to go younger. But if he is not signed, it opens up a roster spot for Jason Hill, Tony Wragge, Demetric Evan, Curtis Taylor or a FA corner.

Nice to see some ppl really put some time into this. Interesting you cut LaBoy (Singletary noted he's almost 100% recently which is interesting b/c before he signed, it sounded like he'd been 100% for months); maybe the foot causes him to get cut. I agree with most of these as being very possible.

This doesn't look too bad. A couple of variables..........
Byham > Finley
McKillop/Bowman > Wilhelm
I could see M. Lewis being cut in favor of Curtis Taylor/Reggie Smith
Brandon Jones or Jason Hill will likely be cut in favor of Williams. I doubt we keep 6 WR's.
Not sure of how the staff see's the Wragge/Cody Wallace competition playing out. They can both swing to C and either G position.
FB should be an open competition. Miller and Caulcrick could be wild cards to supplant Moran Norris. Michael Robinson is a solid contributor, but all of our round 2 - 7 guys can play special teams. We may not have the luxury of keeping a man on the roster for just special teams this year, which is a good thing. Bowman & Byham should be ST Studs immediately.
I also have a feeling that we will be seeking more CB depth prior to and during training camp.
