This team is a QB/RT/FS away from being a playoff team, and possibly even a contender.

Considering that 3rd down is a big blitzing down and our OL is awful...well, you do the math.

1 sack is not that hard to count

We're an 8-8 team talentwise. Realistically, we need to upgrade several positions to be contenders. And we can't fight the draft and/or FA to do so. We can't afford to trade up for a QB, but we can't pass on a QB if one falls into our laps Crabtree style, either.

Alex has earned the right the come back as our uncontested starter, provided our roster remains unchanged at QB. But lets not pretend that makes him a great QB or even the clear longterm answer to our QB problems. He may develop into that guy, but he's isn't that guy right now.

Pretending all we need is a new QB makes about as much sense as pretending QB isn't a need in the first place. Both of those arguments are full of fail.

Thank you, you understand the big picture.

All I really have to add, is that I believe -- or know, rather -- that they're still trying to decipher if Alex can be the long term answer, and I don't think they've been able to do that with just 7 starts this year, nor will they be able to do that with a total of 9 starts this year..

Alex is going to have to really impress in his contract year -- and that's where they're giving him that opportunity to prove he is the long term answer. He may not be, but he's done enough to be given the opportunity. It's the most sensible thing to do at this point. If he can't... well, he walks and Nate takes over and we aren't sitting here waiting for several more years to find a QB.

I was ok with what you said until you made that last dumb statement. You have no idea what Nate can or can not do. In fact, he has shown more of an ability to perform than not. Yet you come to some dumb conclusion. And that old crap about him only performing against 3rd stringers ignores the fact that he was also playing with 3rd stringers without having first team reps. You appear more intelligent than that which is the reason why I highlight the stupidity of your unsupported conclusion. Real 49er fans are tired of these back handed insults from those of you who support Smith to the point where you make excuses for every thing he does not do.

Nate Davis looked by far our best QB in pre-season. I don't care how many plays he ran as far as innate ability, decision making and poise he was on point. If the team does not address the position and stop starting a QB by default this will continue to be in the same spot it is right now, Irrelevent.

A QB change will help this team but I am not foolish to say that is the only need. There are plenty but the main to me on offense would be QB than O-line close second. An Offensive line doesn't win football games. A QB does.

I wonder why any team drafts an oline man in the first round. Just doesn't make sense. Should just draft a bunch of QBs.

Nate Davis isn't the answer to this offense.

OK smarty lets take a look at the last ten number one picks shall we:

2009- Mathew Stafford - QB
2008- Jake Long OT
2007- JaMarcus Russell - QB
2006- Mario Williams- DB
2005- Alex Smith QB
2004- Eli Manning QB
2003- Carson Palmer QB
2002 David Carr- QB
2001- Michael Vick QB
2000- Courtney Brown DE
1999- Tim Couch QB
1998- Peyton Manning QB

Ok now you tell me the most valuable position on the team. An Offensive line DOES NOT win football games, period. Sure some of those were gambles...but you don't gamble if a QB is not INCREDIBLY valuable and instrumental to the teams success.

What does those teams taking QB's have to do with anything? They had to have or build lines around their QB's to enable them to have any significant success.. Carr was absolutely destroyed be a record-settingly bad OL. Where is he now?

Okay for one I said in the first round yet you pointed number one draft picks. Let's have some fun with that MR. LOLSMARTY pants. So, over the last 10yrs the number one pick tends to be a QB with a 70% probability. Yet, out of those 7 only 2 SB wins between the bunch, in 10yrs. If that doesn't tell you it's a team game and a lot of things have to be right to make it all the way I don't know what will. Yea, we should draft a QB it's not like we have other glaring needs.

It means that a QB wins football games and this is a QB driven league. Why do teams invest so heavily in a Qb because a good QB can make a team much better. Cannot bnlame Smith's woes on the O-line. It is more of his lack of pocket presence, knowledge and ablility to make plays when the play breaks down.
Now, come on, OTC, let's just draft a college QB, and everything will be fixed in one game. Don't you realize that Dan LeFevour, I mean Bill Stull, no....Mario Puchinelli can lead this team to the promise land. Draft anyone and just make the switch. He doesn't need to know how to play QB, just insert anyone. You are the one being irrational.

Cheers, my friend.

I agree that we won't know about Alex being the LT answer at QB at the end of this season, and I'm fine going into next year with Alex as our starter - even if we add a 1st round QB in the draft.

What I'm saying is that if a QB falls to us this year, than having Alex on the roster means we don't have to rush him out there. He can sit for a year and watch Alex.

If Alex finally steps up, than we are in a great position. We may have a difficult choice to make when it comes time to resign Alex, but having two QB's on the roster is preferrable to having none imo. We can resign Alex and shop the rookie. Or we can let Alex walk and keep the rookie. Either way, we are most likely better off than we are today.

But if we add nobody this year and Alex doesn't work out, than we're pinning our hopes to Nate Davis and (most probably) starting our search for a QB back at square one. I'm okay if we end up in that situation naturally, but I would hate to get there by actively avoiding adding new QB's to the mix until we know if the gamble on Alex will pay off.

I understand the argument about fixing the OL, etc, before adding a QB. That makes sense. All I'm saying is that we have the opportunity to get a new QB on the roster now and still fix the OL before he has to play.

I don't think we can afford to wait until we know we can give a rookie QB the perfect situation before drafting one.

I never thought the QB rating could be such a misleading statistic.

Right. Funny how some don't get the fact that poor line play and drops and tips by the receivers can give a QB a rating that doesn't always give an accurate account either.

ROFL. Funny how they don't say that when he has a bad game.

better qb play wouldn't solve all the problems but your wrong it will & would've help. with all the close games they had this season you mean to tell me better qb play wouldn't have helped. in some of the games we lost, we were winning most of the game or going back & forth(colts, titians vikings). while a smith did bring us back, he wasn't clutch enough to get us the win(packers & texans). a better qb most likely wouldn't have let us loose to the seachickens WITH the PLAYOFFS on the line. h3!! like i said before even in the philly game, they weren't playin their best & the D was playing pretty good. better qb play could have snuck it out. look at colts(before they lost), saints(before they lost too) & good teams they play the way we have this year BUT THEIR qbs' got it done when it matters most. so i disagree with you, i think it will help. HOPEFULLY time & experience will help with a. smith next year in the clutch & being a leader when the offense needs him most. GO NINERS!!!! in 2010.

Last year the Packers lost seven of their games by four points or less. What did that say about Aaron Rodgers?

Just read a little more closely. We're talking about changing starting QB's for 2010. That will not help us get into the playoffs in 2010.

Oh of course not, but I'm sick of seeing this moron under center every week, we mind as well throw Davis in there and see a little of what he has. The only way Smith should come back next year is as a back up. So if he doesn't why not see if Davis could end up being worth something, maybe be Colt McCoy's or whoevers back up for the next how many years.

Simply switching our QB (especially considering there are no viable options out there) will neither improve next year's playoff hopes, nor help our most glaring offensive issues along the line, our defensive issue in pass defense/rush, and our return game.

97.5 QB Rating today..........

You'd think that Smith had a good day but let's compare his performance to other QB's that played against the Lions this year

Brees 137.0
Farve 115.3
Campbell 97.6
Cutler 100.4
Big Ben 123.9
Rodgers 113.7
Bulger 51.6
Hasselbeck 91.1
Farve 120.5
Quinn 133.1
Rodgers 124.7
Palmer 65.3
Flacco 120.8
Warner 77.1
Alex 97.5

Of the 14 previous QB performances, Alex did better than only 4. The previous 14 QB ratings had an average of 105.15 so Alex did worse than the average QB rating against the Lions.

He did nothing today to signify that he's "turning the corner"

Face it...while the OL is a big problem on this team, the QB play has been as well.

Davis has little to nothing at this point. He doesn't even run plays in practice. He also self-professed that he has bad mechanics. A player's opportunity to show what they have is in preseason and nothing else.

If your "sick" of watching Alex play, don't watch this year and next year.
