Alex Smith will play poorly and yet his supporters will claim that "he's only 26 years old with only 50+ career starts, after two years of continuity he'll finally get it"
Too predictable.
As a charter member of the Alexcuse apologist club . . . next year will be do or die regardless of the circumstances for #11. If it doesn't click in 2010 it just was never meant to be.
I think I've heard that before.
That's odd. Before coming in at half-time in Houston he hadn't played in a regular season NFL game for 2 years.
So he hasn't played this year?
This year was supposed to be his do or die or year and how has that played out. I don't know let's wait to next year and find out.
So you expected him to be perfect after not playing in a while?? you people are f**king pathetic. IDK if the guy is the answer or not and niether do you....let it play out can you blame an organization for wanting to give a guy a full offseason to see if he improves especially since there's no other option.

We should have won 10+ games with our current squad, all we have to do is reduce the stupid mistakes and learn not to lose it. It can be done with just a few changes in our current roster.
"should" is a weak ass word

I suppose if NOTHING changes and McCloughan falls to sleep during free agency and we use our two 1st rounders on longsnappers then yes, nothing will change. But, the QB's, WR's and RB's currently on the roster will benefit if nothing changes and we address the talent deficient o-line in free agency and the draft.

I think alot of you are taking what he said too literally. I also think what he was saying was in regards more to our coaching staff and QB than any other positions. There isn't a HOF QB available this offseason,so like it ot not Smith is the guy. Free Agency is gonna be a question mark because of the CBA. I don't believe for a moment they are gonna sit on their hands in the offseason.

you do realize thats not what insanity means but just coloquial "definition" put out by einstein.
the only continuity this team has had over the least 7 hears is change. time to stop that.
I do realize that yet I personally see that the current situation at hand merits the quote.
They change OCs every year expecting the new one to work out well yet the new one finds new ways to fail. and again does not learn from the past.
They keep on going into a QB battles with QBs that are at best bench warmers ie Trent Dilfer, Alex Smith, Shaun hill, Ken Dorsey, TIm Rattay do I need to go on.
They Promise us year oafter year that we will be a playoff team, which has not yet been fulfilled.
Do I need to give you more reasons?

I just dont see the the difference in change when all the team does is band aid the situation.

On the insanity quote, good. I know of many people that think it's the actual definition
promise of playoffs year after year is fine, its marketing. but you also need to know if the team really has a shot to be a playoff team. In 05, no shot. In 06, we were close becaue of the weak nfc west. Really, thats where everything went wrong. everyone thought because a 7-9 team was close to getting in that they were good. They werent and have steadily gotten more and more talent on this team. It just needs to come togther.
And to be honest, Nolan and McCloughan proposed a 5 year rebuild. Next year would be that year that everything needs to come together. Of course, they also expected that they'd have the same OC.

Bunch of Whiners...
How the hell r some of u people so damn blind? Eliminate the mistakes and the 2009 49ers were a playoff team.
Without some of those dumb mistakes we could have easily beaten some of the top teams in the league...
Pls pull ur head out of ur ass and wake the hell up, Support ur team cause were very close to being a playoff team, Once we get there anything can happen.
2010 will be the first time we know who we are in the offseason, Were gonna hit the ground running for the first time since 2002.
Heres to a good offseason/draft
We are only a few pieces away from being a very talented team.
Go Niners,

Staying the course is the right strategy because returning the 49ers to competitiveness is a multi-year proposition. Here’s the unpleasent truth:
We are still probably 2 to 5 years away from respectability. The 49ers will go with Singletary, Raye, and Alex Smith next year. They will hopefully pick up a couple good players in the draft and be marginally improved in 2010. Depending on injuries and intangibles, they’ll finish somewhere between 7-9 and 9-7. If everything goes right, they’ll actually make the playoffs, only to be eliminated in the first round.
By far, the most important issue facing the team this off-season will be the Santa Clara stadium vote. If that goes through, the 49ers will be on their way back to respectability based upon their ability to compete financially with the rest of the league. In 2011, serious rebuilding can begin based upon the foundation of talent we already have, and we can hope to be a top notch franchise by 2012.
If the stadium measure gets voted down, we are in for many, many years of irrelevance as the franchise flounders, trying to get a stadium deal in San Francisco, LA, or worse, Oakland. If this happens, the 49ers will be the lowest valued franchise in the league, incapable of competing on the same level with any of the top teams.
Almost every team that’s changed their fortunes over the last 20 years has started with a new stadium. For some reason football fans just don’t, or won’t, understand this simple truth: it’s all about money. This has nothing to do with being “cheap.” It’s about running your business on the same scale and with the same type of revenue stream as your competitors. If the 49ers get the stadium deal done, I believe we can find the leadership and the talent to be a top notch team again. The will to succeed is there; all we need is the financial wherewithal. If the stadium deal gets voted down, we all get to find out how Lions fans feel.

More than anything else, continuity won't be a question. The OC might not have the vision that this team been historically known for, but considering the last 5 seasons it's a welcome non-change. The O-line has underperformed for the last 5 seasons (I'm sure Gore's 2006 year will be cited, but how was the pass blocking?), and the O-line coach has been the constant, I'd hope we look to alternatives. The WR coach has been mentioned a few times, but our young receiving core have made strides (in spite of the mistakes) that can be attributed to the QB and receivers needing more reps together. Singletary has shown the willingness to adapt, but I sincerely hope our head coach starts learning the offense so that any transition that occurs amongst the coordinator position doesn't leave the team shellshocked.
