A QB who is supposed to be accurate shouldn't be throwing high and behind his tight end on a crossing route. I think Smith leaves 100 or more yards on the field each game because he either misses his receivers entirely, or throws it to a place where they have to adjust and can't continue running fluidly.

I was really hoping that Smith would take the next step here to end the season and give us something to look forward to for next year. As it is, I don't see how the kid is going to be much better in '10, which means we're probably going to have to suffer through another year of mediocre offense, and in all likelihood, inconsistent defense.

I agree. It is time to turn the page. Can't hold out any more hope..."Maybe in year six he'll get it". He has wasted enough time. Davis needs practice time now, most will disagree. I don't really think Davis could do much worse with a little practice. He made better decisions in pre-season and looked better than Smith did.
Well on the bright side, Smith has 9 TDs, 0 ints and a 104 QB rating in the Red zone.

Its too bad he doesnt get there more often.

I think you only play Davis if he's ready, and it seems as though he isn't based on things I've read and heard. I think we're stuck with Smith for a while. I was a Smith supporter, and still want to be, I just now am really beginning to doubt he will turn the corner and become something more than a mediocre QB.

Unless they draft a QB in the first round, Smith will be the starter next year, and we can maybe look forward to a Nate Davis lead offense in '11.

What's worse now is that these next two games have no meaning on the Alex Smith evaluation because the teams we play are so pathetic. This is why Nate should get a chance to taste live games. Not to compete for next years starting job but just to get a taste of regular season speed.

I've also said this, as have others. This doesn't mean we throw Davis to the wolves as Alex was, btu he should get at least a few series to see just what he's learned over the course of the season. He's had a year to learn the offense. Let's see what the kid can do in real life situations against relatively weak teams. As for Smith's accuracy........what accuracy? He was touted as being an accurate passer coming out of college, but has not translated that to the pros even when he's had the time to throw and he has proven to be only a slightly improved version this year. I'm sorry to say this because I was really hoping for his and all our sakes that he would come through this year.....Unfortunately, he's done too little to suggest that he will ever do so.

those are GREAT numbers..... Alex is really hard to figure out....he does do things that are wrong for a QB to do...like stare down WRs.....and other stuff that makes you understand why he turns the ball over....but then there are other times, usually against weaker opponents he makes perfect throws...

its ALL in his head......his problems are mental...

I don't know if that could get fixed.......hell my head hurts trying to figure him out... doesn't he know it was his time to shine today.... like SanDiego9er said earlier today...all Smith has to do is NOT turn the ball over....yet he does more than once..... it was the first time Sing got on Alex on the field...and it was unfortunately 4 games too late....if Sing got on his case those other times, instead of making excuses for him and throwing other players under the bus....then we don't know how Alex would have responded... Vernon responded well from last years barking....Alex could have as well.....Sing should have got on Alex's case a while ago and let him know turnovers are UNACCEPTABLE!

but he got on Alex on the very last one of the game....and it was too late.

  • Info N/A
McNabb--21/36, 2 INTs, 306 yards
Smith--20/37, 3 INTs, 177 yards

Their stats are nearly identical other than the yards. The reason McNabb's yards are so much better are because of D. Jackson and his line which gave him enough time to let the deep route develop.

Smith had to constantly throw to the underneath route because he was running for his life.

Sorry, but I have watched a few games with Manning and Brady. Imagining them playing behind our OL, with Davis, Walker and Morgan dropping passes, etc, I am certain they would look much, much less accomplished.

They have played behind crappy lines at one point or another and have excelled. Rodgers has a crap line and still leads his teams to some wins. Minnesota had the worst OL in the league beginning this year but Favre changed that. A QB who knows where to go with the ball can make an OL look much better.

The Eagles blitzed 2 or 3 guys at times and there were quick throws open. Alex must make these reads and hit the hot route quicker and stop running back and around looking deep.

I agree that a Brady or a Manning or a Favre would make our o-line suddenly look at lot better! They all have pocket presence--the ability to move in the pocket to buy some time, or the ability to find someone quickly when there's no time to be bought.

Also, those QBs would put their passes in a better position to be caught. They commented on the "great" Alex to VD pas on (I think) a 4th down late in the game, but the replay showed the pass was behind him. Davis got belted pretty well, but still held on to it. Credit to Davis! But had the pass led him, Davis probably would have gained another ten yards, maybe more! And those kinds of passes made by a Brady or a Manning or a Favre not only immediately makes your receiver better (fewer drops), but it also makes them try harder, because they know their QB isn't going to hang them out to dry with a poor throw that is going to get them nearly killed!

Brady, Manning, and Favre have great o-lines are you kidding me? Sit down with a stop watch and time Alex in the pocket vs Manning and others you mentioned in the pocket. They have TWICE the time.

If you think Brady makes his o-line look good you are crazy. Brady cant throw on the run. They HAVE to have an o-line that can block or else they wont be successful.

And Smith, statistically, is decent against the blitz this season.

I said at one point in their careers they have had crap lines and still had success. At certain points in their career.

This is a good point. Most of his problems are mental and he is a very tough guy to figure out. See even though you think it's unaccepable and have reasons that he sucks or isn't the guy, atleast you have reasons a person can have a logical discussion with, as opposed to the other guys going "OMGZ SMIT SUX WTF BBQ HAR!"

I don't think he's that hard to figure out. He's a presnap QB as he was in college. He finds the mismatch presnap and that's where he's going. That is why he can't make a simple cover two read post snap and stares his receiver. This shotgun spread is so he can see who's on who and the defensive personnel better. Philly disguised a lot if their defenses presnap. This is why he has difficulty under Center becaue he doesn't process what's happening in the Defense while he's dropping back.

Good point. That's how I play madden. Can he get better at this? Do QBs get better at this in the NFL?
Quote:
Smith was equally resolute. Asked whether he believes he is the 49ers' quarterback of the future, he said, "Absolutely. No question. Coming back this year, I'm more confident in myself and my abilities than I've ever been."

As a case in point, Smith said he knew exactly what went wrong on his three passes that turned into interceptions Sunday night. That's not something he could have said earlier in his career when everything was a blur to him. The game has slowed down. He's more comfortable and he sees things clearly.

Confidence and a take-charge mentality have been elusive for Smith early in his career, and it's refreshing to hear him speak forcefully after a game.

Well for what its worth...a silver lining I guess...
