These stats are from different source so they differ a bit from the original post. Also, they don't include the latest Seattle game.

Crabtree - 42 targets, 4 drops, catches 61.9% of passes targeted to him (44th / 104 WRs)
Davis - 81 targets, 7 drops, catches 70.4% of passes targeted to him (30th / 59 TEs)

And just for fun:

Heyward-Bey - 38 targets, 5 drops, catches 23.7% of passes targeted to him (104th / 104 WRs)

Crabtree 42 targets 26 catches-4 drops 86.67% of catchable balls
Davis 81 targets 57 catches 7 drops 89.06% of catchable balls

Are the other 12 targeted throws for Crabtree and the 18 for Vernon just throws in their basic area?

I'm assuming those throws would be either judged as not catchable or the defender made a good play.

Okay, I have some real numbers now! The data isnt complete for all as not all of these "most dropped passes" candidates were also in the "most thrown to" category. That means that didnt make the list have an even worst tendency to drop the ball! But we wont go there for now. Here is what I found:

.......................................[Passes ].......
.......................................[dropped]....[Thrown to]...... [% dropped]
1t Vernon Davis SF 9.............9.................101................. 8.91%

(Sorry about the formating, I tried to line them up to make it clear)

The data above shows that Vernon is amongs some pretty important names as far as reliable targets who get thrown to often. Amongst that group though, he is also more prone to drop passes when thrown to. The only 2 guys with data that drop more passes than him are T. Owens and Brent Celek.

Make of it what you want.... My opinion is that his number have improved from last year when we looked at a similar analysis. I think it was something like 12% if my memory serves me well.... That's why I always referred to him as brick hands this offseason!

Why didnt you do crabtree?

The site he is working from only shows the top 20 in each category. ?Crabtree doesn't have enough times being thrown to to show up in that category.

Its all viewed by how you want the stats to read. 9 is not bad compared with how many times hes been thrown to.

9 out of 100 = 9%
9 out of 10 = 90%

Both droped the same number.

With the exception of Tim Hightower (and Colston who gets thrown to a lot) look at the top 2/3 of this list and notice the correlation between the receiver and .500 or less teams.

I didnt find data at first, but now I have it! His numbers are pathetic!!

He has been thrown to 56 times and has dropped 7, which means he has dropped 12.5% of the passes he's been thrown! He has the new brick hands crown!

Stats are stats... Look at his near 9% drop percentage and compare it to the other guys on the list. Those are elite players and you'll notice their drop tendencies are much less! V. Davis still needs to work on his hands to become an elite player, although he's made great strides this year.
I don't remember Crabtree dropping that many passes. I would have guessed 4. Vernon Davis on the other hand has friggin butterfingers!! Whenever passes go to him, I am never sure if he'll catch it.

He does catch slower passes much better than fast ones! That's for sure! Alex has to throw darts sometimes depending on the route and the defense.
Stop making Alexcuses

A good quarterback will find a way to win. No matter how many average-to-spectacular throws he makes.

I expect Alex, after delivering a perfect laser to Vernon Davis, to make a mad sprint towards Davis to catch the ball in case Davis tips the pass or bobbles it.

No excuses. You guys are nothing but Forty Whiners.

You must have made this list up. There is no way Braylon Edwards doesn't have more than 9 drops

Oh man what was that one 49er rookie WR's name that had a lot of trouble with drops...J.J. Stokes no, Rashaun Wood naaa, Gene Washington nope...

Jerry Rice. That guy turned out servicable.

"Dropped" passes is a virtually worthless stat. Subjective at best and open to interpretation. There is very very little difference between "top" (1-3 drops) and bottom (10 or so drops).

I will take Davis' production, including blocking, defense stretching and defensive game plan attention, if it comes with 12 or so "drops" this season.

Crabtree will only improve as he gets used to NFL game speed, playcalling and coverage.
