Roman isn't some fresh-out-of-water fish, he has all the skills to be a stable OC/offensive assistant (was a QB coach, offensive quality control guy, and an offensive coordinator all at the pro level).

I'm curious though as to who will be our next ST coach, that might be the last slot filled (as we could be holding out for somebody on John's staff at Baltimore).

From what I understand, our next ST coach looks to be Brian Polian.

Brian Polian enters his first season at Stanford as the Cardinal's special teams after spending the previous five campaigns serving on the coaching staff at Notre Dame.

During his five seasons with the Irish, Polian headed up Notre Dame's special teams units while also assisting with coaching duties with the defensive backs and linebackers.

While in South Bend, he was a nominee for the AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2008, while also being named one of Rivals.com's Top-20 recruiters and the Big-10/Midwest Recruiter of the Year. He was also named the Tom Lemming Top-3 Recruiter nationally that season. He coached in back-to-back BCS Bowl Games in 2005 and 2006.

Throughout his tenure as special teams coordinator, the Irish special teams were some of the best in the nation and recorded some of the top marks in recent school history. Notre Dame blocked or deflected 10 punts, 10 field goals and three PATs during his stay at South Bend. In addition, the Irish returned four punts and a kickoff for a touchdown.

Under his guidance, the Irish boasted the best kickoff coverage unit in the country in 2008, allowing just 16.5 yards per return. It was the best yards per return average by an Irish team since 1975. The Irish punt coverage unit shined as well, allowing just 6.0 yards per return.

Amongst his players, punter Geoff Price finished as the school leader for punting average in a season and punter returner Tom Zbikowski tied the career record for punt returns for a touchdown. Also, in 2009, kicker Nick Tausch was named a freshman All-American, prior to his departure.

In 2007, the Irish ranked 13th in the nation in net punting at 37.9 yards per game, marking the second straight season the team had finished in the top 15 nationally in that category.

Prior to Notre Dame, Polian served on the staff at Central Florida, where he coached the running backs and was recruiting coordinator. He mentored running back Alex Haynes, who became the Golden Knights all-time leading rusher - finishing with 3,356 yards and 27 touchdowns. While at UCF, he led the recruiting of the 2004 and 2005 classes that led the Golden Knights from an 0-11 record in 2004 to a bowl berth in 2005.

For three seasons starting in 2001, he was the special teams coordinator and runing backs coach at the University of Buffalo. In 2002, running back Aaron Leeper was award the league's freshman of the year honor, th first major award for the university since 1999.

Polian graduated from John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in history and later added a master's degree in education from Baylor in 2000.

A three-year letterman as a linebacker, he was named to the all-Ohio Athletic Conference team in 1996 and helped the 1994 and 1996 teams to top-10 finishes in the NCAA Division II rankings.

Polian's father, Bill, is the president of the Indianapolis Colts and his older brother Chris, serves as the team's general manager. His younger brother Dennis is the assistant to the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings.

He was a contributing author to the AFCA book, "A Complete Guide to Special Teams."

Born Dec. 22, 1974 in the Bronx, N.Y., Brian and his wife Laura are the parents of one son, Aidan Doyle.

well Manusky was good, but i wont miss the rest that are leaving by any means. i think its funny how the Texans have a notoriously bad defensive backfield, and they go and hire our DB coach to improve it, when our defensive backfield is almost as bad.

no but better can only happen if things become different. so right now were all hopeful, rather than the last year being doubtful.

regardless of how successful this new coaching hire is, it could be the push that gets us over the hump of missing the playoffs every year, and brings more fans back, as well as giving us a push towards the new stadium.

i have a feeling that if we can get this new stadium built, our fortunes will change. revenues will be up, the 49ers as team will be more attractive to coaches and players to join, and the fanbase will be happier.

Agreed, especially with Shaw unavailable. With this being Harbaugh's first NFL HC gig he's going to need all the back-up he can get. I'm sure Roman is capable but he's never been an OC at any level and Drevno was an OC at DII San Diego U . . . not exactly the big time. An if Roman and Drevno are brought in, and neither becomes the OC, where do they coach? The majority of their coaching experience is at o-line . . . which doesn't bode well for Solari and Brown to stick around if Callahan is brought in.

Very versatile, bright young coach. Has 13yrs of NFL coaching experience and learned the WCO in Carolina from Siefert, Gill Haskell and Bill Musgrave. Also worked under Billick in Baltimore. I read somewhere that Roman was responsible for designing and CALLING most running plays for Stanford the last 2 yrs.
