I see alot of posts consisting "Greats" and alot of "Very Well" as far as how he played today....

I don't agree with this at all... I think he did fine but needs to improve... he is playing like how he played before getting injured....which isn't necessary a good thing....

alot on here wanted to blame that INT on Crabtree but that was not the case.... Alex threw it high and away......Alex can get away with this as far as passes to the side line....but when throwing it in the middle of the field he needs to either be accurate or miss low....

and there was another pass that was an INT that was dropped by the cb....

so besides these passes...... Isaac Bruce let him down, dropped very easy catchable passes....and of course, imo, Raye let him down by not letting him get into rythem....this is one thing have been complaining for most of the season with Hill back there.....the playcalling doesn't really give our QB chances to get into rythem.... I believe that WildCat on 2nd down was a wasted play....and that 2nd down inside hand off to Norris of all people on 2nd and 10 WTF???

but back to Alex... this is one thing that drives me crazy...which I don't understand... he made some PERFECT throws...hooked up well with Crabtree for some first down.....but after hitting perfect passes....he can be TOTALLY off...and he does this in the middle of the field..the worst place to do so.

and of course those delay of game penalties are killing us....he should have been paying attention or if the playcall came in late he should have called time out... it went from being 3rd 7 to 3rd 11 on that crucial drive......

but yeah the Playcalling is what frustrates me...the formations we use....like someone else has mentioned, even when we come out in Shogun, Gore was still able to get some good yardage on a play.....we have to spread the defense out...and let Alex look at everything and decide early what he needs to do....when everyone is bunched in together and our Oline has let our QBs down on simple blocking assignments it makes a QB's job that much harder to try and read what a defense is going to do.......for as much as we run it.... I don't remember seeing one playaction rollout...or bootleg... I don't get it.......also not one deep pass attempt...why is this?

some on here need to be prepared for the reality of what is going to happen next week.....although most on here feel Alex played Very Well....next weeks game is going to be at the Stick...and the home fans have had no problem booing him after one series in the past...mainly because of having to pay to see him and our offenses struggle in the past.......so Alex needs to play efficient....Bruce needs to do his job...the oline will need to do their job...but more importantly Raye is going to have to do his job by putting Alex in the situation to make our offense successful.....or else it is going to get ugly at the stick....even if the game is close... we can't turn the ball over in the middle of the field like today.

I generally agree with you when it comes to QBs, but not here. Alex IS NOT the same QB he was before injury.

He's seeing the field a lot better and is stepping into his throws with a lot more confidence.

actually I think he was a better QB before his injury and still might have been better than he is today so far..... the best I've seen Alex play is when we move him around....when he is allowed (or chooses?) to throw down field..... when no one is open he moves....along the side line while still looking down field and completes a pass....bootlegs, playaction rollouts etc.....but so far from this years Alex he seems to be more comforable and confident when we are in Shotgun.... but this is where I'm not so sure how he is doing....because it seems like the only time we run Shotgun consistently is when we are in 2 min huddle....at the end of the first half or when we are down and the defense is playing semi prevent.....

so I don't really know where he is at right now...is it because he looks best when we are in 2 min situations....or is because Raye is not calling the plays that Alex is most comfortable with..... right now I'm more leaning on Raye at fault....but if Alex throws more passes in the middle that are not accurate than....maaaaan we have a problem.

I wish Sing would just take the playcalling duties away from Raye and give it to Mike Johnson...he is the one who has been working with Alex....I'm sure he knows what is best for Alex and our offense.
Your stuck on one pass down the middle and extrapolating an emergency out of it. I noticed on the highlights that he had several very nice passes in the middle of the field, why not focus on those?

One thing that stands out from last week and this week is that Smith plays the game much faster than Hill. He seems to process information faster and can find the open receiver quicker because of it.

If only we had an oline that played well and an OC that implemented a STRATEGIC offensive gameplan that plays to our teams strength.

Actually there are more than one play that, imo, Alex f'd up on.....like the pass that was almost intercepted that was dropped....or just that pass to Vernon that he threw too late, that some on here were getting on Vernon to tippy toe the catch...but if you watch the replay you would see that the past got there to late for him to even try to....Vernon got open pretty quick if Alex hit him earlier that would have been a nice conversion......there are more...but like I said earlier... I don't have too much of a problem with him missing those passes right now because of his long lay off (maybe in a couple of weeks, but not right now)...

the reason I make a big deal about the one pass over the middle...is because all it takes is one mistake over the middle that can change a game....so even if he had some nice ones here and there, it won't matter.....either he misses low or don't miss at all......and its not just me...I would think ANY coach would stress this.

I agree... It's not how pretty his passes look. It's how effective he is as a QB. Smith just plays a different Game then Hill does; but, both provide around the same results. A 200 yard game where they complete apx 60% of their passes maybe throw 1 or 2 TD's with 0-1 int and end up with a passer rate in the 80's.

If we want to be a playoff team we need better production from this spot. One of these guys needs to step up or we need to get a real QB in here IMO...

Wow, I love the way you phrased that to sound like Smith did subpar. He threw for 198 Yards today, TWO YARDS SHORT of his second consecutive 200 yard game.

After checking the stats, he had a 59.4% Completion percentage, as well... about as close to 60% as you get.

You're missing the point.

Hill's stats look like...
AZ 58% completions for 209 yards 1 TD 0 Interceptions and a 89 QB Rate.
Sea 73% completions for 144 yards 0 TD 0 Interceptions and a 86.1 QB Rate.
Min 60% completions for 195 yards 2 TD 1 Interceptions and a 94.6 QB Rate.
Stl 58% completions for 152 yards 2 TD 0 Interceptions and a 104.9 QB Rate.
Atl 40% completions for 198 yards 0 TD 1 Interceptions and a 45.7 QB Rate.

Alex's stats for this game.
Ind 59% completions for 198 yards 1 TD 1 Interceptions and a 74.7 QB Rate.

You could put Alex's stat line right in there with Hill's and no one would know the difference. Neither of these guys are playing at the level we need to be a playoff team. They're playing like Trent Dilfer...

Someone needs to step it up or we need to get a real QB in here...

Voices of reason; you and Afrikan..

It seems so clear. However; how do you think Manning would perform in Raye's play calling?? Man, wot a frustrated dude that would be..!

Uhh well, Smith has to win a game, don't you think, before he is doing so great? At the risk of bringing up a dead issue, he in FACT lost the game last week with the INT with 55 seconds to go at the 38yrd line. A couple 10 yrd plays would have got Nedney in range to try to go to OT at least.

Some people have really lost sight of this with all the gushing going on. Maybe because the QB play has sucked so bad continually for 6 years+ when we see a few balls thrown on a rope, it's like the sea parting.. , man oh man..

No wins yet for our dear Phoenix, maybe next week? But like my bro said, if he throws more costly INTs you will hear the boos rain down. Patience with AS is thin, to thinner.. we have seen plenty already.. BTW - Bruce needs to sit, and now. Where is his passion?

if the play calling... well, Smith could what he does best. Don't clown draft GMs and coaches have a clue about letting a so-called talented QB drafted first, play in a scheme that's suits him and the other personnel??

And on, and on, and, on...

Yeah, but is it unrealistic to expect him to play at Aaron Rodgers level? How about Jason Campbell or Joe Flacco's level???

Instead, we have 2 QB's playing at a Trent Dilfer level...

WOW U SIR ARE AN IDIOT!
I don't agree with the guys point of view; but, at least he has the balls to post his viewpoint instead of just calling someone an idiot. If you disagree with him, discuss it instead of making a personal attack on the guy.

Uncool

thanks man. It has been getting worst here lately, part of losing. People are frustrated and want to take it out on someone. Why not insult someone over the internet?

I think Alex did a superb job handing the ball off to Gore and Coffee.

Are we asking him to do anything else?

sorry, just a little bitter over here.

I think some of you are pretty rediculous. The kid hasn't started in over two years and almost beats the Colts, who by the way have the 5th best passing defense in the league. Also completes about 60% of his passes working behind a backup left and right tackle. Lets be honest, is he a top 5 or 10 QB right now? Absolutley not. Did he play the best game I have seen since Norv Turner was here? Absolutley. Finally starting to see the potential in him that I have never seen. Him and Crabtree got something good going.

Alex has a future in SF. Some of you who just hate him for the past need to get over it and start supporting this kid. He played a solid football game today and I feel its only going to get better from here on out.

With that said Mr. Raye needs to either change his thinking or get the hell out of here. When Alex completed a pass on 1st down Gore was chewing up 5 to 8 yards a carry. When we ran 1st and 2nd down he was averaging about 2. Open up the air game and Gore will break a 50 yarder every week. Oh yeah and can we once, just once send someone deep down the field? Seriously would it kill us to send someone on an go route once? Do we not do that or do we just not have enough pass protection for someone to get 20 yards down the field?

Alex is no longer a rookie in this league. His stats and performance were very mediocre and what you would expect from Hill. I think that it is too soon to judge his future here, but if today's performance is indicative of what is to be expected, then his future with the team will be that of a back-up.

Those plays to run the ball and formations are needed. They prevent the defense from pinning its ears back against a weak line and every now and then, Gore will break one. However, Alex was not back there running for his life. He had adequate time and simply did not even seem to try to avoid a couple of those sacks. Although his pocket presence has improved, I don't get the feeling that he believes that he is a leader; at least not yet.

There is no way that an objective observer can give him a grade higher than a C. I'm sorry, throwing the ball over 30 times while netting less than 200 yards with 1 td and 1 interception and AGAIN causing a delay of game penalty at a crucial time in the game does not impress me.

Becareful when you go to work, they may drug test you. Smith played very well today in a tough stadium against the best QB in the last 20 years. He had us in the game to win at the end. He fell short, but the spread was 12 points. If that doesn't impress you, then what will besides a win?

Oh, and a 74.7 QB rate... We could insert these numbers directly into Hill's stat sheet and no one would know the difference.

If you look at the stats for this game it looks like S.Hill on paper but if you watched the actual game it's obvious there's a difference and who the better QB is.If Raye didn't go vanilla most of the game Smith's stats would not only look "prettier" they would have won a game they had no business even being competitive in.

Smith's stats for the year in 1 1/2 games:

34-54 for 404yds 4td 2int 7.5avg 63%comp 95.0 rtg

Hill's stats for the year in 6 games:

87-155 for 943yds 5td 2int 6.1avg 56.1%comp 79.6 rtg

Smith has almost the same amount of td's in less than 2 games and at this point his stats look more favorable than Hill's

[ Edited by Super5 on Nov 1, 2009 at 20:18:24 ]
Compare the stats all you want. Smith has the arm and the zip to get the ball into tight, closing windows where Hill can't. He gives the team a better chance to get the ball to playmakers like Davis and Crabtree.

At this point Smith's stats look more favorable

The question was how he did today. Not last week, not 2006 but today. Now today, he played at the same level as Shaun Hill.

Look, all I'm saying is that this kid has not put up numbers that we as fans should be content with (just for the record neither has Hill). This type of QB play will not get us wins against good teams. Our D is just not good enough to carry poor QB play
