Positives about Smith
His attitude is different he played with poise, confidence and a command of the offense. Most of the time he knew when to avoid sacks by running or moving around in the pocket. He didn’t focus on one receiver and did ok on his progressions. The drive he had at the end of the first half was a thing of beauty. Teams know he can throw a deep ball and get the ball to the sideline with zip so that has to be respected by opposing defenses.
Negatives
At times barley looked down field and just dumped it off. Threw several ball high his incomplete to a wide open Bruce about killed me, on the screen while he realized the Colts had figured it out damn near threw a pick 6 when throwing the ball away. Right now just does not look totally comfortable behind center in 3 WR set. After 4 years in the NFL this should not be a problem. Tried to force some passes into double coverage and did not make some good reads. There were several plays he should have done an audible and did not.
Reality
It was Smith first start in 2 years playing the #5 defense in the NFL in their house thinking he would have to score a lot of points (who knew our D would do so well). His OL is a revolving door of linemen due to injuries and poor play. On several occasion drives died due to stupid penalties, dropped balls and Crabtree’s fumble. You can’t blame that on Smith.
I am not going to make a judgement about Smith until end of season and I want to see what he does against the Rams, Cards, and Seahawks teams that Hill has already played against. Overall though considering the circumstances Smith did all right and statistics do not tell the entire story.
Frankly I thought we were going to get blown away today by Indy. Looking at their 5 previous games they led on avg. 21-7 at half and scored 40+ points a few times. The defense kept us in the game. Our ENTIRE offense let us down. We lost the turnover battle, again, which cost us 3 points we are not good enough to make mistakes and overcome them.
Nicely done. I said before the game that we needed to win the turnover battle and we didn't -- and that's why we lost. That pick was unfortunate, the fumble was bad. We really shot ourselves in the foot today... I truly believe we lost the momentum in the game with the delay of game penalty and the ridiculous sack given up right afterward. I was f**king shocked at the too many men on the field penalty at the end of the game.
Smith played pretty well, but he really needs to rethink that double-bar facemask that he wears.
I mean, even looking to the sidelines for a call he needs to tip his head down to see.
How the heck can he scan the field with that mass of metal right in front of his eyes?
Look at Manning's, for instance. No bars at all in front of his eyes.
Weird.

Bruce's dropped pass, bulls**t call on Baas, Vernon not getting 2 feet in and Crabs fumble were all drive killers. As was Jones catching the punt on the 3. To many mistakes.

I've been a big hater of smith, and for good reason! But today's performance was solid by Smith, just looking at the stat line won't tell much! Yeah there's rust in his game (clock management) and I expect it to be cleaned up before the next game. Two weeks in a row that's been a problem on key 3rd downs! But today, the WR's, Crabs and Bruce, had some drops, that should of been caught! Yeah smith had some over throws, but he looked a lot sharper than manning did! I think one reason smith's performance was hurt was by Raye! We def tightened the play calling after the pick. But, If this coaching staff has any brains we will be operating out of the gun a lot more often now! I mean we easily scored before the half!
Smith's poise and leadership has def improved from the scared sheep look he used to have! And one thing I love about his check downs is getting the ball in gore's hands as a WR! HE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PLAYER ON OUR TEAM, and he has to get the ball in his hands. He turned nothing into something on countless plays, whether it was making people miss or running with them on his back for 5 yards!!
I think(pray) with each with week Raye will have more confidence in Smith's ability to throw deeper passes and more down field! I was kinda bummed that it didn't happen this week! The O-line played great today and it was a great opportunity to see Alex perform. He stayed in the pocket and got the ball pretty quick. But for his success, I think we need to have crabs, morgan, jones and hill be the main WR's! Bruce is done!

Excellent post!
You could say the exact same thing about the way Peyton played today...

You are referring to the 'hit him in the hand' turnover of Crabtree and the desperate attempt throw with O-line guys pushed back in his face in Houston...right.

Wow, I love the way you phrased that to sound like Smith did subpar. He threw for 198 Yards today, TWO YARDS SHORT of his second consecutive 200 yard game.
After checking the stats, he had a 59.4% Completion percentage, as well... about as close to 60% as you get.
You're missing the point.
Hill's stats look like...
AZ 58% completions for 209 yards 1 TD 0 Interceptions and a 89 QB Rate.
Sea 73% completions for 144 yards 0 TD 0 Interceptions and a 86.1 QB Rate.
Min 60% completions for 195 yards 2 TD 1 Interceptions and a 94.6 QB Rate.
Stl 58% completions for 152 yards 2 TD 0 Interceptions and a 104.9 QB Rate.
Atl 40% completions for 198 yards 0 TD 1 Interceptions and a 45.7 QB Rate.
Alex's stats for this game.
Ind 59% completions for 198 yards 1 TD 1 Interceptions and a 74.7 QB Rate.
You could put Alex's stat line right in there with Hill's and no one would know the difference. Neither of these guys are playing at the level we need to be a playoff team. They're playing like Trent Dilfer...
Someone needs to step it up or we need to get a real QB in here...
If we were to count the one throw to Vernon Davis where he didn't even attempt to drag his left foot inbounds as a drop, Smith had four very catchable passes dropped. Add those to his totals and he is better than any of Hill's games.

I thought Alex got in a rythm on that awesome 2 minute drill in the 2nd. Then when the Colts opened the half with FG, the 9ers went into ultra conservative mode.
It's extremely frustrating.

Oh, and a 74.7 QB rate... We could insert these numbers directly into Hill's stat sheet and no one would know the difference.

rams pass D- 25th

The 49ers have now lost three straight despite getting a solid performance from Alex Smith in his first start in nearly two years. Smith was 19 of 32 for 198 yards with one TD and one interception. He was sacked four times behind a makeshift offensive line that may have sustained another devastating blow when left tackle Joe Staley went down on the first play of the game. The 49ers are already without right tackle Tony Pashos for the rest of the season.
Yet thanks to Smith's steadiness, Frank Gore's long run and the continual contributions of Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree, the 49ers controlled the game for most of three quarters.
It was good enough -- almost.
"A couple dropped balls make the difference in a game like this," 49ers coach Mike Singletary said. "Any missed opportunities in a game like this are going to bite you in the end. The only thing I can say is we came here to win the football game."

I give Smith a B for today.
His QB rating is not indicative of his play as he had easy catches dropped.
The thing that was most impressive about his play today was the quality of a number of the throws he made. The long pass to Crabtree was a thing of beauty. In the past, he didn't make throws like that.
Smith, like most QBs, plays best when he gets into a rhythm. The biggest problem he has is when the ultra-conservative running plays gain nothing and then everyone knows he has to pass. Until Raye learns how to keep him in rhythm and quit with this unproductive running-between-the-tackles running game, Smith will not reach his potential.
I'm pleased with Smith today. The problem with this team is that it does not have enough overall talent to overcome stupid mistakes, like the demonstration penalty, or VDs failure to drag his foot on the one sideline throw, etc. Against a team like Indy, the 49ers must be flawless, and they were good, but not flawless. The biggest flaw continues to be an antiquated offensive philosophy.

He looked good IMO. The one interception was a tipped ball that the WR could have maybe brought in with a better effort. A tough catch for sure but that WR is capable of it.

I keep reading this over and over.... the difference between Peyton and Alex is that Peyton has proven himself in this league....where as Alex as proven to over throw his WRs in the middle of the field...he use to do this before his injury and even did this during the preseason game at the Stick...
on top of that I didn't see Peyton overthrow his WR over the middle today...
again I don't expect him to be perfect on his passes....just don't make those mistakes in the middle of the field where there are alot of defenders ready to make a play. Its real simple...if you can hit the numbers throw it low...
