There are only a very few qbs in NFL history that can 'carry' a team to victory. We are talking about Dan Marino, John Elway, Joe Montana, Bret Favre, etc. Even Manning up until a few years ago was considered not able to win the big games. Most every NFL qb need a good system, an all around good team, couple that with their talent to throw the ball and play the qb position in an efficient manner to win games. To expect A. Smith to or any NFL qb 'carry' the team to a win is just ridiculous. Because those qbs that can carry a team only comes a handful every 10-15 years if that.

Smith can help this team win, but to expect him to carry this team that will remain to he seen, but not out of the possibility. After all people thought he was done just a year ago.

Wow, I love the way you phrased that to sound like Smith did subpar. He threw for 198 Yards today, TWO YARDS SHORT of his second consecutive 200 yard game.

After checking the stats, he had a 59.4% Completion percentage, as well... about as close to 60% as you get.

The point is Hill wouldnt have made half the throws Smith did so it wouldnt have been as close as Smith had. This loss is on Raye and f**king Sing they dont know s**t about football.
He played ok, better than in the past, but still no win.

He will win very few games if the offense continues to be called as is. The play calling is asinine at the very best.

After the INT MS went way into his tiny freakin shell and didn't allow anything except for pass plays you could see coming from last week..

Our team is, and will be held back mercilessly by the f**king play calling. All the, "We have to learn to finish better, we will be in the playoffs, etc ad nausa , WORDS .. Will add to NOTHING but losses if they refuse to let Smith do what, apparently, he can do best; semi spread with judicious runs..

This is just more of the stupid play calling we have seen for 6 years..

I am so tired of this crap..

Now Smith may have a chance to do something and what, run th eball up the middle... Hey I love the 3 long TD runs, but that aint going to happen to often..

Playcalling is just weighing this team down increadably..

Wow. After reading a lot of the posts I'm surprised at the number of people down on Smith. He's going to be a very good QB for us and I'm glad we didn't junk him. His trajectory is clearly heading upward. My main worry was that he was a head case and couldn't handle his nerves, but these past two games he looks like a different player to me. That was a top defense on the road with conservative play calling. Probably half of his incompletions were either throw aways to avoid a sack or dropped passes. The one part of his game that he needs to exploit to put himself over the top is to run a bit more. Use the slide, don't be a hero...but when he starts learning to run 2-3 times a game for 10 yard pops, we will be very difficult to defense. I'm very optimistic right now. Despite having a dinosaur for an OC, we have some very talented players on the offensive side of the ball, including Alex Smith. And for all the capping I've done on Vernon Davis over the years with his hands of stone, where's that crow? I'll eat a double helping. I never envisioned Davis turning his game around like that. I though pass catching was God given, but Davis to his credit has shown that you can develop pretty good hands with lots of practice. This team is knocking on the door.

he did ok........ he didn't do anything fantastic yet he didnt do anything terrible.

I see alot of posts consisting "Greats" and alot of "Very Well" as far as how he played today....

I don't agree with this at all... I think he did fine but needs to improve... he is playing like how he played before getting injured....which isn't necessary a good thing....

alot on here wanted to blame that INT on Crabtree but that was not the case.... Alex threw it high and away......Alex can get away with this as far as passes to the side line....but when throwing it in the middle of the field he needs to either be accurate or miss low....

and there was another pass that was an INT that was dropped by the cb....

so besides these passes...... Isaac Bruce let him down, dropped very easy catchable passes....and of course, imo, Raye let him down by not letting him get into rythem....this is one thing have been complaining for most of the season with Hill back there.....the playcalling doesn't really give our QB chances to get into rythem.... I believe that WildCat on 2nd down was a wasted play....and that 2nd down inside hand off to Norris of all people on 2nd and 10 WTF???

but back to Alex... this is one thing that drives me crazy...which I don't understand... he made some PERFECT throws...hooked up well with Crabtree for some first down.....but after hitting perfect passes....he can be TOTALLY off...and he does this in the middle of the field..the worst place to do so.

and of course those delay of game penalties are killing us....he should have been paying attention or if the playcall came in late he should have called time out... it went from being 3rd 7 to 3rd 11 on that crucial drive......

but yeah the Playcalling is what frustrates me...the formations we use....like someone else has mentioned, even when we come out in Shogun, Gore was still able to get some good yardage on a play.....we have to spread the defense out...and let Alex look at everything and decide early what he needs to do....when everyone is bunched in together and our Oline has let our QBs down on simple blocking assignments it makes a QB's job that much harder to try and read what a defense is going to do.......for as much as we run it.... I don't remember seeing one playaction rollout...or bootleg... I don't get it.......also not one deep pass attempt...why is this?

some on here need to be prepared for the reality of what is going to happen next week.....although most on here feel Alex played Very Well....next weeks game is going to be at the Stick...and the home fans have had no problem booing him after one series in the past...mainly because of having to pay to see him and our offenses struggle in the past.......so Alex needs to play efficient....Bruce needs to do his job...the oline will need to do their job...but more importantly Raye is going to have to do his job by putting Alex in the situation to make our offense successful.....or else it is going to get ugly at the stick....even if the game is close... we can't turn the ball over in the middle of the field like today.

I generally agree with you when it comes to QBs, but not here. Alex IS NOT the same QB he was before injury.

He's seeing the field a lot better and is stepping into his throws with a lot more confidence.

actually I think he was a better QB before his injury and still might have been better than he is today so far..... the best I've seen Alex play is when we move him around....when he is allowed (or chooses?) to throw down field..... when no one is open he moves....along the side line while still looking down field and completes a pass....bootlegs, playaction rollouts etc.....but so far from this years Alex he seems to be more comforable and confident when we are in Shotgun.... but this is where I'm not so sure how he is doing....because it seems like the only time we run Shotgun consistently is when we are in 2 min huddle....at the end of the first half or when we are down and the defense is playing semi prevent.....

so I don't really know where he is at right now...is it because he looks best when we are in 2 min situations....or is because Raye is not calling the plays that Alex is most comfortable with..... right now I'm more leaning on Raye at fault....but if Alex throws more passes in the middle that are not accurate than....maaaaan we have a problem.

I wish Sing would just take the playcalling duties away from Raye and give it to Mike Johnson...he is the one who has been working with Alex....I'm sure he knows what is best for Alex and our offense.
Your stuck on one pass down the middle and extrapolating an emergency out of it. I noticed on the highlights that he had several very nice passes in the middle of the field, why not focus on those?

One thing that stands out from last week and this week is that Smith plays the game much faster than Hill. He seems to process information faster and can find the open receiver quicker because of it.

If only we had an oline that played well and an OC that implemented a STRATEGIC offensive gameplan that plays to our teams strength.

Actually there are more than one play that, imo, Alex f'd up on.....like the pass that was almost intercepted that was dropped....or just that pass to Vernon that he threw too late, that some on here were getting on Vernon to tippy toe the catch...but if you watch the replay you would see that the past got there to late for him to even try to....Vernon got open pretty quick if Alex hit him earlier that would have been a nice conversion......there are more...but like I said earlier... I don't have too much of a problem with him missing those passes right now because of his long lay off (maybe in a couple of weeks, but not right now)...

the reason I make a big deal about the one pass over the middle...is because all it takes is one mistake over the middle that can change a game....so even if he had some nice ones here and there, it won't matter.....either he misses low or don't miss at all......and its not just me...I would think ANY coach would stress this.

Agreed , Sing is starting to look like a stubborn fool, I like him but if he can't see what going on then maybe he should look himself in the mirror. Obviously they are not going to throw the ball all over the place but to ignore your team's ability to do so , it's almost self destructive, they could have won this game if they had balls

Except for that drive before the half. That's the offense we can have if Raye just opens it up.

I want him to be our coach and be great at it, but he has got to change his philosophy and seriously pull his head out of his ass. Alex can play we are now built to pass IMO use the spread like Indy does. Pass to set up the run. Start Sims bench Snyder and put Spurlock or Hill as KR, Pr. We are f**ked with the Nate injury but if he can change his philosophy and yell at Raye I think we can make the wild-card. if we continue this O we win 5 games tops

After checking the stats, he had a 59.4% Completion percentage, as well... about as close to 60% as you get.

You're missing the point.

Hill's stats look like...
AZ 58% completions for 209 yards 1 TD 0 Interceptions and a 89 QB Rate.
Sea 73% completions for 144 yards 0 TD 0 Interceptions and a 86.1 QB Rate.
Min 60% completions for 195 yards 2 TD 1 Interceptions and a 94.6 QB Rate.
Stl 58% completions for 152 yards 2 TD 0 Interceptions and a 104.9 QB Rate.
Atl 40% completions for 198 yards 0 TD 1 Interceptions and a 45.7 QB Rate.

Alex's stats for this game.
Ind 59% completions for 198 yards 1 TD 1 Interceptions and a 74.7 QB Rate.

You could put Alex's stat line right in there with Hill's and no one would know the difference. Neither of these guys are playing at the level we need to be a playoff team. They're playing like Trent Dilfer...

Someone needs to step it up or we need to get a real QB in here...
I know this post will just get lost, but I am satisfied with what Alex did today.. Were there some plays he should have done better.. Yeah.. Was it mostly his fault.. Not every time.. But, overall, I like what I have seen so far.. And I hope he keeps it up..

What people are forgetting is that this was freakin' Indy that we played.. No one in their right mind predicted us to win, yet we were leading at half time 14-9 (should have been 14-6 if Morgan doesn't get whatever penalty he got).. Many people talked about limiting Manning time on the field like the Dolphins did yet they allowed big plays.. Our defense played AMAZING except for Spencer's slip up on coming up on the HB pass.. They did not allow Manning to get a touchdown pass!

Like some had said, if the Niners would have stayed aggressive on offense, I feel we actually could have pulled this one out..

As for Alex, I see this as his first real start.. Rodgers started 6-10 his first year.. I'd like to see how he's done as a whole by the end of the season to really say what I think of him.. And, yes, I know he has career stats already, but after being out for over a year and a half, I don't understand how so many people almost expect him to play like a Tom Brady or Peyton Manning.. I'm sorry, but that's a little too unrealistic for me..

I disagree there dude.

Alex put the ball on the spot perfectly. I fault Davis 100% for not bringing the other foot in bounds. Davis had a lot of time to tip his foot down but he just didn't. On that kinda of route the ball is supposed to be towards the sidelines.

If it was a WR who was running that route instead, i bet they would have been able to bring the other foot in bounds.
