Per an ESPN report, Nate Clements is moving to free safety, so San Francisco could really use a shutdown corner like Joe Haden.

Local reports say he is staying at CB and ESPN who barley covers the Niners says he is moving to FS. I will wait and see once we know how he has recovered from his injury.

Bottom line we need to draft a CB no matter what happens to Clements and FS.

Dashon Goldson is definitely the Free Safety...

If Michael Lewis was playing deep field, we'd be getting beat deep every single game of the season...

just because Goldson lines up into the box doesnt mean he plays Strong Safety, and even if he does line up occasionally on the strong side, it's only a situational package..

near the top of the NFL in missed tackles and blown coverage among all S.

....but he hits hard

Damning stats. You got a link to an article?

HELL NO HE DOESN'T... just talking out his arse.

yes i do, go look. i back up what i say with stats, unlike most people.

read the stats and weep. one of THE very worst cover S in the NFL this year. and he misses way too many tackles. 11 this year. and i know he had a couple today.

click the link, and sort by "Cov." scroll all the way down, look whos in last place.

those stats are not straight forward..... when you look the number of snaps he got this year compared to others on that list, combined with they way our pass rush has struggled this year to get to the QB, its understandable about the number of catches and missed tackles in his area......offenses have had more opportunities to try and pass against us.

as far as the yards he "gave" up.... its funny that he has done a good job (being middle of the pack) as far as % of catches he has giving up.....as well as yardage per catch....

So yes our Defense has given up huge plays this year....we have all seen it...but how often as a fan have you seen Dashon get burnt....one of the main plays I remember was the play against the Falcons....I don't know about the one against the Texans, but I do know Spencer didn't get back far enough on his part.

from my perspective from watching the team play this year.... Dashon is a better tackler than most safeties.... Dashon has great covering speed (especially to what we are used to here in NinerLand).....and he always seems to be around the ball.

he is not just a hard hitter......no where near the one dimensional play of Roy Williams

I'm very impress with Goldson's improvement! That's one less position we don't need to worry about.

Doesn't he have like 4 INT's and 4 fored fumbles this year? Thats not a bad year for a first year starting safety. Plus in the second half of the year he responded very well to becoming the QB of the defense and calling the plays. Give the kid a chance.

With that said M. Lewis needs to go. I think you need another strong tackler and heavy hitter who also has coverage skills so your FS and SS can be interchangeable. Adds a dimension to your D that other teams can't easily game plan for.

So either go out and get another saftey, Otagwe?, or move Nate to safety and draft the CB out of Florida in the first round (my favorite option).

2010 CB's
Haden
Spencer
Brown
Bly/Harris/Hudson

2010 Saftey's
Nate
Goldson
Smith
Taylor

I don't think Lewis needs to go anywhere. I think you invest an early draft pick (R2-R3) for a SS prospect that can rotate with Lewis in certain situations - ala Roman.

FS: Goldson/Smith
SS: Lewis/T.J. Ward (or someone else).

That's a good combo at safety. And you keep Clements at CB - which is what both parties ideally want.

I think you missed what he was saying. Goldson could move over to SS and then 49ers couls find an another player (not Lewis) to play FS.
It's easier finding a SS thanit is a FS. I think Goldson should stay at FS.
I like to see Goldson moved to SS and draft either Earl Thomas from Texas or Chad Jones from LSU in the 2nd round.

yeah...some people dont know much about our players..

Goldson needs to be SWITCHED to SS though. less coverage, more run stuffing, blitzing, tackling, and fumble forcing for him. hes an awful cover S.

no i mean that his style of play is more suited for SS

I would like to see the 49ers draft Robert Johnson FS from Utah
I'd love to see him move to SS, Mike Lewis is a great tackler but he's a liability in coverage and it showed over the course of the season. Can anyone say Eric Berry?

Exactly. I do not want to move Goldson as he looks very comfortable at FS now. If we have the chance to find a quicker SS, that could pay big dividends for us down the road.

Possibilities may include Kam Chancellor, Ward, Skinner (Maryland), Phillips (Northwestern), Stuckey, Coleman, Church, etc.
well, i like the move Goldson to SS,

then draft a top FS in the draft, i wish clements would move to FS, then we could draft a top CB.

But, michael lewis is to injury prone with his concussions, it's only a matter of time when he'll get another and then he's useless to us.

So i say take a top Saftey, or try to sign OJ ATOGWE, remember he dates singletary's daughter, so theres a good chance. haha
