All I hear is how Alex has his passes dropped. Didn't seem to bother Aaron Rodger's having a career year with arguably the worst offensive line in the NFL last year.
It actually did, Vikings were 4-4 until they got their bookend tackles back from injury, and then their line was one of the better ones in the league helping close out the season with a 7-1 record.
Warning Alexcuse incoming
a 4-4 record with the one of the worst lines seems eerily similar to 8-8 with one of the worst lines. Not comparing Alex to Rogers, obviously Rogers is better at this point, but just pointing that out.

This is such an old argument. Just because you say that you want Alex to do well doesn't mean anything.
For an example: The Seattle Game where Smith had perhaps his best game. Go back and look at the comments. The "ACP" or whatever people are calling the haters these days, for the most part, harped on the last throw, or said "he's only had one 300 yd game now" etc.
You see that since the ACP's (and the Alexcusionists or whatever they are called) are both emotionally invested in Alex's Success or failure for personal/ pride/ validation reasons, they interpret things with a bias. That is the problem. So what some on here are saying is that it doesn't matter what Smith does well (again as evidenced by the Seattle game last year) The ACP's will focus on any negatives to make themselves feel like their view is correct. While on the other hand the real hard core Alexcusionists will do the same thing by over-looking his faults. IT is so funny when somebody from one faction calls out the other - like you just did - for doing something that they themselves are promulgating in posts all the time.

I personally don't believe Alex had one good game last year. He had some average games. He had some below average games. And -- in others -- he just sucked.
I hope you're not referring to the game AT Seattle. If you call this "good quarterbacking," then we will never agree on this point. Heck -- I don't think we'd agree on what's black and what's white.
Good quarterbacks do not have games like Alex had against the Bears -- in front of the home crowd. Good quarterbacks take advantage of their counterparts when they throw five interceptions in one game. Good quarterbacks turn a five-pick game into blowouts.
Good quarterbacks do not play the Rams to a first half tie during the last game of the regular season.
Did you miss those games? And you're calling me biased? Really?
I think you just made his point. He didn't have a "good" game versus Houston? Jacksonville? Really? If you don't think Smith had a "good" game up in Seattle than your defination of "good" seems more like "superior" to me.
This isn't an argument over how I want my steak cooked! How many definitions of Alexcuse play are you using? Rare? Medium Rare? Medium? Medium Well? Well Done?
There are two descriptions of play in my book: well and not well.
Alex has failed to take this team to a playoff berth -- hell he hasn't even had us in a playoff hunt -- in FIVE YEARS.
To me: that qualifies his play as: NOT WELL.
I am really happy that we have people in charge right now who will accept only one outcome: playoffs. Period. End of story. No excuses. Playoffs. Perhaps even a division title. Dare to dream?
I don't think Alex can get us there. I haven't seen any indication or any sign that proves otherwise. I know there are others in this thread who appear to be just fine with giving Alex six years -- seven -- eight -- nine or ten without seeing or experiencing any tangible results whatsoever.
BUT I AIN'T ONE OF THEM.
Well, you are free to change the point of your post now, of course...
I really think that you either realized that you were destroyed in your little rant, or you just aren't comprehending what we are trying to discuss, so I guess I am done with this one.
Again in your post you exaggerate the opponents position, the negative qualities of the player, the negative perceived effects ("no tangible results"), and make almost laughably simplistic claims. Again you are proving my point about the kind of "fan" that you are. I probably shouldn't have engaged, it is impossible to get someone in your position to be objective. In any case, at least we won't have to worry about this argument after this year.... hopefully.... though that might be optimistic thinking on my part.
BTW- your definition of "Not playing well" would also mean that Patrick Willis, Vernon Davis, and Every other 49er during this era have not performed well...so I guess we should get rid of all of them right? Or is it just one of them that you don't like? See how overly-simplistic definitions of good and bad are problematic?

Whether it was HIll, Smith, JTO, passing the ball, but we take this fact lightly for some reason.
2. Even in the days we had Rattay, and Rashaun Woods, and im sure a few others u guys know who didnt do squat. I've never heard of any teams die hard fans attacking any of our players verbally in any manner as i have since i first joined the zone. Now dont get me wrong, have opinions, show frustration, and even get a little crazy, definitely. But to bash one player, and make it all about one player, never seen that like in here.
3. Favre, Montana, Young... While watching all their interviews, and just like Brett said yesterday, yeah we have have tons of guys with talent, but if we cant all come together co-hesively, and be on the same page, then we cant win. I have to do my part, but they also have to as well for us to be successful. Winning teams have everything in place to make it work.
Really? Not according to the zone. With some of us, it's all about the QB, and nothing else. QB aint right, we fail. But u have SB champ Dilfer, etc. Sanchez played ok last year, but had they not had the no 1. running offense and top defense, u still think, theyd be in the post-season???????
This whole post was a thing of beauty, jersey, so I won't quote it all to say,.
I completely agree. I think Alex Smith gets overly criticized around here. One bad pass, or one dropped ball, and his are magnified. Yes, there is a lot of heat and expectations that come along with being a #1 overall pick in the draft, but if you put anyone else in Alex's same situation, I guarantee you that they struggle just the same way!
I think part of our problem (most of us as fans) is that we were spoiled by two decades of success, and by having two Hall of Fame QBs. We hold our QBs to a much higher standard than any other franchise in the NFL. From day one, whomever our QB is, he's automatically awarded as our next great QB. Those are high expectations, sometimes unreachable by anyone! I want to win just as much as anyone here, but there are times when people here get out of hand with it.

When you compare QB ratings versus common opponents does offensive line play into the ratings at all? I know they don't show up in the rating but do you think it effects it Do you think either Niner QB got average or even adequate NFL protection last year? Niether Hill nor Smith ever consistently got a lot of time in the pocket in last year.
Rodgers is often used as a comparison (because of all the sacks he got) but when I saw the Pack play it always looked like Rodgers consistently got better pockets to throw out of than either Hill or Smith.
It sure does; but this is where Stats and Football don't work well together. There are so many variables that you can get the stats to say just about whatever you want them to. If we had a very instinctual QB then he would be better apt to cover the lines weaknesses. If we have a slow QB then our lines problems would be amplified. Either way, I could use the QB as the scapegoat if I cared to do all the math...
I guess what I'm saying is what we all already know; every position has an impact on every other position. So, what it comes down to is who do we perceive as doing their part and who do we perceive needs to improve.
As for me, I think the O-line needs to improve, our pass rush needs to improve, and our QB needs to improve.

He might been a little below average statistically (above 45%, below %55) but to say that is "well below average" is kind of a joke.
Houston was not calculated because he did not start and the reasoning for his performance was too debatable..

Ok I have decided you just don't have good reading comprehension skills then. Don't you understand that I am not defending Alex Smith? I'm not sold on Alex Smith for this season or in the long run. As a much less biased fan than you on this subject, I can see some good points in either direction of the argument, while you will always choose to see things so that they slant to Smith's detriment. It is the same thing that some Alex supporters overlook the negatives. THAT WAS THE WHOLE POINT OF MY POST! Haha yet again proving my point and you are not understanding why... this is ridiculous. Go back and read s-l-o-w-l-y. Come on man, you can't really think that we were having an argument about the merits of Smith there can you?

I'm happy to talk about the football decisions, but part of that is being able to have an intellectually honest discussion. It is much more fun to be able to talk to people on here or read posts from people with no "chips in the game" so to speak. That is all I was trying to say with that comment. Again, the point of my post wasn't to destroy anyone. I was hoping that BIllBird could try to understand how he was doing exactly what he was calling the "supporters" out for. It is a stupid endless cycle of interpreting situations based on personal bias.

RE: Alex Smith
Response: BULL
I really think that you either realized that you were destroyed in your little rant
Yeah man, you toasted me but good. All Alex all the way. I can see now that Alex can do no wrong.
I've just gotta stop with them negative waves.
Why are there more and more posters on here concerned with "destroying someone" instead of talking football?
Well, you did start by saying Alex played no "good" games last year and then cited a lot of games in support. I took exception. Then you just jumped to the fact that the Niners not having been in the playoff hunt with Smith as quarterback and that qualifies as playing "not well." You changed the whole argument. We were talking about specific games and then you changed it to something quite different. You might as well have just said "I don't like Smith, never have and never will and occassional good performances will not change my mind" which I think everybody already gets.

1. Jerry Rice- If your a WR and the ball comes in your direction, i dont care if it comes down side ways u catch it. I use this because i'll say this, since Young and Garcia played QB, a lot of our players have had TONS of drops.
I think most look at the reality of the situation. If it takes 6 years for a QB to finally have a decent year, then it may never be possible. I, for one, am just tired of waiting for Smith to succeed. To give so much patience, following injury, average performances, etc., I think we are entitled to expect more from the starting QB.
This is a society that, for the most part, lives in the now. Smith doesn't satisfy our desire to be good NOW (well, maybe this year he does, but not the past 5 years in the league), therefore many are growing impatient with him. I sure hope he does well, since I would love to finally make the playoffs. But if he falters, I expect that he would walk after this year and never be heard from again...

Years of bad to mediocre QB play with no answer in sight.
It's a civil war amongst us. Smith backers are not more loyal than the Smith haters/bashers, realists, whatever you call us. We expect more than what we have been given by this franchise lately. That includes Smith.
Smith has to prove us wrong. For the sake of the team, I hope he can. It's time to be above average. No more up and down games. Everything is there.
