although the niners might not want to sign him anymore.
This is the best article I have seen on Crabtree yet. The whole thing is great, but I think my favorite part is:
"Some athletes utter words - generally upon signing a big-money contract - that they love the sport so much they'd play for free. You won't hear Michael Crabtree make such an absurd statement."

just read it for myself this morning too, agreed, dang good article...
i thought he broke it down as best as its been broken down and his point on this getting to a point where the niners won't even want him is something that isnt echoed enuf. at some point, he isn't even worth 16 guaranteed, 20 total and ive got to believe we are fast approaching that.
while he could always sign any minute now, those holding out hope or that are convinced he will be a niner should prepare themselves for the possibility of the opposite holding true. i think everyone should get themselves to realize there is a point that this will get to if it hasn't already where we should no longer want him. as MM said, niners could start dropping their offer at some point to assure he doesn't sign.
for me personally, i think if he doesnt sign by sometime next week he isn't going to lower his demands at all and it will be in the niners court to raise theres. i am of the opinion that at that point, michael crabtree is no longer worth signing as it isnt worth raising the offer on someone who has taken a me, me, me attitude to a whole new level(never played a down, never ran a route in a game, training camp etc.) and for someone who will be a non factor till next year now anyway. even if he magically broke and took the niner offer in the weeks or months to come, he lacks the value to make that worth happen.
i dont want crabtree if he doesnt sign by next week, he doesnt give my team good bang for the buck. cleveland browns would have had it right to shy away. questionable character, would be potentially a collasal waste of money. past my own personal deadline, the negatives begin to outweigh the potential positives.

What would his trade value be? I think it would be hard to get a first round pick for him at this point but who knows. Whatever happens to him, he has set out organization back another year.

9ERS, PLAYOFFS
LET'S GO D!!!!!!!
Not true. He was one of the best players to come out this year but there have been plenty of WR's rated higher them him over the past few years.

Niners have offered a contract what a no. 10 draft pick should get. Crabtree's camp reportedly wants DHB's money. I say, meet in the middle. Crabtree is not a usual #10 pick, so break the slot and offer him money between the no. 8 and no. 9 slot. Meet him half way, and get the deal done. At this point, Crabtree's side wants to save face, and Niners obviously would like to get him on the team as well.
That's the best possible scenario left on the table imo. Give him a 6 yr. contract which has a clause for team option for the last 2 years with high escalators like teams do with no.1 overall pick. If he is really good, he can get paid 7-8 million a year in the last two years, and if he is not, he can become a FA after 4 years.
and show every rookie in the future that if they hold out long enough, teams will buckle and pay them more money? No, I would rather not. Keep the same offer, if he don't take it, attempt to make a trade come March...
While I do not like the idea of him getting traded to someone and getting money, I would love to see him drop to the second-third round in next year's draft, but that is really not in the best interests of the team. It makes more sense to trade him come March 1st if the holdout holds up...

Looking back at the draft I recall his "posse controversy" and a lot of people were saying it was being blown out of proportion. I don't think so. He may think he should have been drafted higher but there is a reason he fell. If he wants to proove he should have been number one then he needs to proove it on the field, not with his mouth. Kevan Barlow had a lot of big talk too.
I really want an example set with this kid, and if he does not sign I hope he never makes it big. I know he will sign, but I'm thinking more Mike Williams.
Nobody is bigger than the game.

How are you coming to that conclusion?
We offer X.....He wants Y.....We wont give him Y.....He wont accept X, neither side is going to cave into the other. I'm really starting to think he isn't going to sign.

I do not get it - some say that we can trade him around March but I thought that the trade deadline for draft choices had already expired. Help please.

The trade deadline for 2009 season on draft choices was August 12th. The Niners will still control his rights starting at the end of this season till next March, before the 2010 draft.

Does anyone think his foot is keeping him off the field? If you couldn't play right now and knew you could potentially get some extra cash for not rushing to sign what would you do? At this point I don't see anyone in the league rushing to trade for a diva in the lockeroom expecially one who's never caught a pass in the NFL I hope Deion's right and there is a demand for his services come March but I don't see it.........

I believe we hold his rights right up to the draft so we could refuse to let him workout for any team.
I'm almost to the point of doing that to make him fall even furter in the draft and use our 2nd rounder to pick him up, give him a low-ball offer (say $ 0.50 for 5 years) and making him sit out another season. Let's see his value after 2 years away from football. If he wants to play hardball, let's play hardball.
Let him suit up for Sundays in his Subway uniform!
