I'd love to see Brooks blow up, but aren't we getting a bit ahead of ourselves here? After all . . .

We talkin' bout practice. Not a game. Practice.

Nah, we are not getting ahead of ourselves. We have genuine hope that we may have an inexpensive solution to our pass rushing woes. I don't think Coach S. is getting ahead of himself either.

I think it is just genuine excitement, that's all.
From Sando on FB:

Mike J Sando Chilo Rachal punishes Kentwan Balmer in "nutcracker" drills. Twice. Players fired up.

I'm with you on the excitement. I was referring to the burn on MD comment.
Apparently Shaun Hill And Brandon Jones look very good today.

Here You Go

From Matt Barrows:
"The MVPs of this morning's practice, which was played under uncharacteristically gray skies? I'll give you two: Shaun Hill, who looked quite sharp during team drills, and Brandon Jones, who is making everyone forget about Michael Crabtree with yet another big catch downfield. It was Hill's turn to run the first-team offense today. Here's how he did in early set of team drills:

1. He hit Morgan along the sideline just if front of Dashon Goldson, but Morgan only was able to get one foot in bounds. Incomplete.
2. Jones got tripped up on a 12-yard crossing route, but still managed to hand onto the ball. Nice catch.
3. Hill scrambles to his right and is chased down by linebacker Ahmad Brooks, who has looked very good while taking over for Parys Haralson (hip).
4. Hill wiggles free of pressure and spots Delanie Walker downfield for a 28-yard gain.
5. Hill fires a pass along the right sideline to Vernon Davis in front of safety Reggie Smith. (second-team defense was in)

Second team drills:

1. Hand off to Frank Gore, who gets a nice block from David Baas.
2. Up-the-middle run by Gore.
3. Hill audibles and throws to the left side to Morgan in front of Dre Bly. Gain of 10 yards.
4. Nice play-action by Hill. He throws 35-yards downfield to Jones who crashes into cornerback Marcus Hudson but still comes down with the ball.
5. Run to the left by Glen Coffee
6. Hand off to Gore over left guard."

I believe the second unit was run by Alex Smith not Shaun Hill. Typo or Freudian slip? According to Dan Brown:

I disagree, at least at OLB depth I do.

ILB's - Willis, Spikes, McKillop, Ulbrich, Roland -

OLB's - Lawson, Haralson, Brooks, Harris, Briggs, Washington -

4 outta 6 OLB's are question marks, that position screams for an upgrade and more depth.
"Sometimes you can get an idea of where players stand as far as the final roster by the special teams lineup. Here is the No. 1 kick-return team: Ulbrich, Kory Sheets, Hudson, Brooks, Zak Keasey, Takeo Spikes, Balmer, Norris, Walker, Robinson and Allen Rossum."--M. Barrows

Where's Clayton?

From the Mercury News blog:

Coach Singletary had the players take part in another round of “The Nutcracker.” The highlight of the drill was when undrafted rookie guard Kyle Howard moved back Sopoaga, much to the approval of the rest of the offensive linemen.
Is there an afternoon practice or only one practice today?

I am starting to like Harris more and more. His versatility may bump one of the other three off of the roster. Right now, I would say Harris is a better Sam and Will than Brooks.

This is why I am so excited.

If Brooks and Lawson can step it up along with Haralson, then we can add to those three next year in a heavy DE/OLB draft! We can start building on that quality depth.

Hmmmm....wouldn't it be awesome if next year, our pass-rushing squad become like our WR squad this year?

I'd like to see Harris in a real game before I pass judgement on him, seems more like a Will to me. And I think that's where San Diego used him last. Manusky knows him best, so I'll trust his judgement.
