QB Competition

Stick a fork in Smith. Unless he has a HUGE turnaround in this next game, he's riding the pine to start the season.

Well see i dont know about that because the same could be said in regards to hill, and just doing what he feels most comfortable doing. His strength is quick pass short. dont matter if we dont like it, it's just his strong point, and even he said if i dont feel comfortable doing something in the game then i wont do it. Even sing said he wanted to see hill go more downfield.

In the first game both underneaths to davis in which davis would have a breakout season because in my eyes davis will always be hills first option. And it was like that in the Denver game as well. When he took that second sack, people were open down the field but after the pump fake he panicked, saw that his checkdown man wasnt open and took the sack.

Im gonna watch this next game just as close, and i bet the farm that you will see him drive down the field probably, but then stall at the end. We dont really talk abut it that much, but after defenses started to figure hill out, then his passing became almost non-existent. Now i dont mean in total yards but in yards prepared for the TD. Soo many times in those last 5 games, teams realized that you take the checkdowns away from Hill, and you force him to go deep when not running the ball, and more times than not you'll get the sack, or him forcing a checkdown. And do we forget all the fumbles for holding on too long and not bombing it down the field. Some said he rarely held onto the ball, but i remember games where he looked worse than leaf and o'sucky combined.

At least this time Sing even said, we already know what we have in hill, so its just what you see is what you get. Smith may not start the season, but at the same time, not because hill has done so perfectly in games, but because smith hasnt done enough to stand apart. If hill does start, I say by week 4 teams will already have the quick out defensive approach nailed.

I just don't think you can compare the two weaknesses. Smith has major weakness in accuracy and reading the defense which makes almost any play unexecutable. Shaun Hill only has one weakness and that's a ball over 40 yards. He has proven to zip 15-30 yarders in the middle of the field so, I think he is miles ahead of Alex Smith.

Couldn't agree with you more JoeCool. Throwing a 45 yard pass on a line isn't the most valuable trait a QB can have. Having a strong arm just means you can make up for mistaken or late reads (not to mention the deep ball). Hill has consistently shown an ability to quickly read the D and move the ball, something that is invaluable when the O-line is still a work in progress.

I am not in Camp Alex at all but I didn't necessarily disagree with resigning him. By the end of this contract he will be around 27 meaning we will pretty much know exactly what we have (barring he is some late bloomer like Gannon/Warner). Cutting him for nothing and then watching him take off some place else would have sent the Bay Area media in a frenzy. I agree that he hasn't shown anything worthy of starting so at least we know we have a mediocre back up locked up for two seasons.

How so is that, they already paid him what they were going to pay him. The new contract just lowered the number for two years, cutting him would have completely wiped him off the books. Sure some of the bonus would have counted against the cap but that money was already paid.

Yeah. Not good at all for Smith.

its one practice. i think/hope that its actually good for him to take his lumps in practice though and hopefully get used to reading different defenses again. hopefully he goes through his progressions faster when the bullets are flying and just throws it to the first open player. it may never happen for him though and if it doesnt than oh well.

Wouldn't that make it 2 practices, yesterday mornings and today, i heard he and Hill both looked ok in the second practice yesterday so i'll not count that one, or am i wrong???

Not just one practice. He has been slower with the ball in EVERY practice.
