im glad both hill and smith seem to be having a good camp. Unlike last year where reports from both Matt's had all the quarterbacks having terrible outtings and not being on the same page with recievers.

I think Hill should have the upper hand though. As in say they both do relatively the same in tc and pre season: then hill should get the nod.
I'm rooting for Smith but he HAS to separate himself from Hill. IMO he has with his deep ball ability but if he's not consistently making plays in game time and is just doing the same stuff Hill is then it's Hills job. Come pre season Alex must not only move the chains but show us what he can do that Hill can't. It's like any job interview. Sure you're a great guy and I'm sure you can get the job done but what separates you from everyone else? What do you bring to the table?
We already know Alex is capable. The coaches know that thus the competition. But he has to show us why he should be chosen over Hill. You can't just walk into a job interview and hope everyone else just sucks. You have to try to be the best assuming everyone else is better.

SPEAKS FOR ITSELF...

Shaun Hill starts, if he sucks, let Alex Smith come in.

What speaks for itself is how people tend to not take into account when these stats were accrued.Smith played on a team with much less talent than Hill got to work with,so those stats mean absolutely nothing. If this were not true then there would be no need to have a QB competition as we would know who the starter is already.Let the one that wins it in the competition start, they will have earned it.

Shaun Hill wins us football games, has a career 90 QB rating and people still want Alex Smith to start. Ridiculous.

Okay I agree.. Shaun Hill looks good on paper, but he still took over the same team that O'Sullivan was sucking with.

Dude, this is common sense. I think it might be too complicated for most people to understand.

So,let me see if I got this right. You guys think that Shaun Hill would have done any better than Smith on the 05-06 teams?I think it is funny that "intelligent" posters like yourselves fail to see the forest for the trees. You see the effects but not the cause that leads to them.I have watched the niners for 30+ years and I have never seen a niners team with less talent than the 05 roster, and the 06 roster wasn't much better.I love it when people try to blame one person for a teams lack of success when it is the truest of team sports, then try to question other peoples comprehension of reality.

Absolutely, because while Alex Smith is more physically gifted, Shaun Hill is a more talented quarterback.
He is our Chad Pennington. He gets no respect.

The 05 roster was horrible, yes...but there's absolutely no question in my mind that Shaun Hill would have done better. Smith had 1 TD and what, 20 turnovers that year? Lets be realistic here, that was one of the worst seasons from a QB in NFL history.
And please, the 06 roster was GREATLY improved. Our running game was top class and our defense picked it up during the 2nd half. We won games that season DESPITE our passing game.

I personally think Hill would never have made it through the 06 season because of being sacked so much.

Rattay did fine with that 2005 roster....and I'm sure he would have did EVEN better with Antino Bryant in 2006...
Rattay and Shaun play pretty similar....both have quick releases and spread the ball around.....I'm sure Shaun would have done fine, most certainly done better than Alex with those 05/06/07 teams....

Maybe you should do a little research before you post your opinion as fact. The defense was actually worse in the second half of the 06 season. So in all actuality,we won games DESPITE the defense. As for how the roster was improved,I guess that is speculation no matter who puts it out there.
