They did try and trade for Sam before moving up to #3. Wonder if the same folks would've been OK with them swinging for that fence

Yeah, the signing of a QB didn't surprise me - it was his contract and when he was signed.

he was specifically targeted and that's why he was a day 1 of free agency signing. His contract shows that the team really wants him (insane amount of money for a QB3). I think it really shows how uncomfortable they were going in with just Lance.

i thought we would make a traditional QB3 signing and then give Lance all the reps until Brock was back. I didn't expect us to pay a guy to actually compete with Lance for the position and take reps away from Lance.

To me, that says volumes about how they view Lance right now. Minimal trust in him and his ability in the short term. I expected a Brandon allen type signing. Not someone they actually envisioned playing week 1. Lol just someone who could fill in if we have a bunch of injuries again.

All of this. Kyle has had his eyes on Darnold for a while now. Honestly I think that Darnold will be the week 1 starter. Unless Purdy gets time in preseason games, which is doubtful. I just can't see Kyle being able to pass up on an opportunity to see what he can get out of Darnold.

It sure is going to be VERY interesting - can't wait for the season to start.

IMO, one thing for sure - No matter how it ends up, we won't be caught short without a quality back-up QB.

is a whole lot better than the last quarter of the season.

I commend you, some people actually try to hide that they rode the short bus. Takes courage to pronounce it to the world. Good boy

So I take it that you're making fun of special needs kids?? So tough of you to do so. Nice!!! You're so cool.

It's a turn of phrase or slang. And if you want to talk about work for special needs kids we can do that offline. DM me. Ill introduce you to the SCCOE (Santa Clara County Office of Education) if you'd like along with everyone who wants to come cause we need more volunteers.

Kyle had his eyes on Trey Lance too. Imagine thinking Kyle is just going to throw that kid away given everything they've given up to get him because he wants to kick the tires on a guy on his 3rd team in 6 years.

I personally anticipate that Lance will be QB2, if he is on the roster. Which I think is 75/25 right now. It all just depends on if they get the offer they want. It isn't like some team has to pry him from us - they'll move on from him quickly if they get an offer they like. You can't say that for any of our other main players. That whole "id trade my grandma for the right offer" is just nonsense fluff for the media - they wouldn't trade Bosa, Aiyuk, CMC, Kittle, Trent, Deebo, Warner, Greenlaw, Huff, Armstead etc. lol because having those players means more to our success than having draft picks.

Anyways, The main reason why I think Lance will be QB2 is because if you push him farther down the depth chart - it craters his already minimal value. Plus Lance should have the edge playbook wise. I do think darnold will have a chance, I mean it's nuts they're taking reps away from Lance. Lol that kinda tells you everything you need to know.

brock will be the starter week 1. I think he will be participating in camp much earlier than some realize. He will have completed 2/3 months of the throwing rehab and have been 5/6 months through the rehab by the time camp even starts. No reason why he won't get eased in. When you're that far through rehab - his arm will be essentially back to normal. It's just a matter of making sure it's ready to go.

Lance is being benched. He will have to duke it out with darnold for QB2 and Purdy will be QB1 until he proves otherwise.

im also confused why some don't think Lance is being benched. Lol he was QB1, and now he is no longer QB1..? Hell he might not even be QB2. Lol but that isn't being benched?

the way I view it KS eyes are on the prize, the Super Bowl trophy, and he's gonna roll with whoever gives the best chance at it

And the way I view it why are we assuming that a guy who is still learning the offense and is on his 3rd team in 6 years is that best chance?

I liked the signing because it gave us a great QB room and hopefully protects us from last year's tragedy but everyone is simply just pushing Lance to the side because he doesn't have experience. I understand why we're doing that with Purdy as QB1...but not Darnold. He's done nothing so far to merit that elevation. Now if we go into camp and he's consistently outplaying Trey and showing a great grasp of the offense...ok it is what it is, play the best.

Right now I see no reason to thank the best is Darnold. Didn't work with Josh Rosen. We'll see how Darnold looks.

And they don't think Lance is ready to get them there this year. I don't think they know how far they can get Darnold this year, but think he's got a chance. I think the plan was to pick up Sam and trade Trey, but ran into zero market for Trey, so unless that changes, they'll probably keep all three this year, so Trey still has a chance at qb2 if Sam stays a "work in progress". Don't expect the FO to ever say anything negative like that about Lance when they'd like to get value for him, but don't expect them to play him either if Sam comes along on the offense and gives them a better chance to win.

Because he wasn't...

You don't get benched for injury. Brock coming in and playing great isn't a knock on Lance.

We don't know that. We have a great example of a team who didn't know what they had with the Eagles last season. Looking to trade for Wilson because they didn't think they could get where they wanted to with Hurts.

Whoops.

Rosen was arrogant. Darnold is self critical. Which one has the best chance to improve?

That statement would have had a far higher probability of being correct about Purdy last year.

Sure. That's the position most NFL teams are in. Lose your starting QB for extended periods of time and your season is in trouble. We have two backups competing with each other and will hopefully have some nice insurance for a short term absence of Purdy. I wouldn't expect us to be a legitimate Super Bowl threat if we're relying on Trey or Sam to take use there as a full time starter, so to speak. It's really unlikely.

I see it different, as this is a unique team. We have an MVP candidate at RB. Good depth all around. Two #1 WRs. An AP TE. A HOF LT. A #1 D in football, with the top FA addition. It's not unreasonable to suggest SF as the best O around the QB spot, and also the best D. So that's near or at NFL best, on both sides of the ball. So I think, if you just have someone game manage this thing, you can win a SB that way. Most cities, don't have it built up both sides of the ball, like we do. Darnold on a poor team would have no chance, like has been the case. A lot of QBs could have great success here, if they are functional, good QBs. It's as built a team, particularly on O, as I've seen since the 90s, in 49er history.
