s/o to @acosta32_jp for pulling these numbers. here's a look at some of the differences between wilks and demeco's defenses last season. wilks blitzed 10% more while predominantly playing with a single-high safety.
Playing more 1 high or 2 high, within a game, should be gameplan specific imo. Some offenses you want to play more 1 high, versus some offenses more 2 high. I wouldn't read too much into that. What I do want to know is when Wilks plays 2 high, what's the breakdown regarding Cover2 vs Quarters. And even then, the 49ers defensive personnel may cause him to change things. What seems consistent is that Wilks does believe in bringing blitz pressure and is zone dominant wherever he's been.
Stoked on the hire of Steve Wilks! I think he met the prerequisites of what Shanahan and Lynch were looking for in a DC. Experienced, Leader, can work in the scheme and I believe balances well with Kocurek, as Wilks background is more on the DB side of things. Love the hire! Check the video out below for more!
Is this the best hire? I really need to read up. Why only one year stint at Browns 2019? I need to go look up their defensive ranking that year. Carolina top five both years he was DC?
After Demeco a little nervous. I wish Vic came over. I do but welcome! Don't mess up.

I'm mixed on the hire, but I trust Shanahan's judgment. He got a raw deal in ARI as HC, but he's had only brief stints as DC.
ARZ gave us trouble when Wilks was there in 2018. They held us to 18 and 15 points in the two games. We lost both of them.
Honestly, I was a little skeptical about both Saleh's and Ryans' experience, but they knocked it out of the park. I wanted Wilks specifically because of his experience so I'm hoping with a couple of new pieces next year our D will be even more dominant than this year. Great hire, go Niners!
Is there a way to keep him for at least 3 years by any chance? I like that he has over a decade of being a DBs coach, strengthen our secondary to match our stout front 7.
