Los Angeles Chargers QB Trey Lance Thread

It's pretty clear to me that he is rhythmic thrower. Needs to get on a roll first and then he truly gets going. Not somebody that is hot from the very first snap.

I was pretty pro Alex Smith despite the struggles because it was clear he got a raw deal 2005-2010. Everyone could see that. Was he really worth the first pick? Not sure. But the dude had several flashes of brilliance during those years. But Lance? I mean…I've really yet to see anything. He has all the things Smith did not…all world talent, coaching/system continuity/and more raw athleticism.

He seems like a good kid but I just don't see anything that makes me go "wow…this kid is special."

I'm not high on Darnold, but he made Lance look bad today. I mean Allen made Lance look bad (I know it was against even worse competition). Trey looked gunshy and overwhelmed while Darnold looked in command. If training camp ended today I can't help but think Trey would be the odd man out. He has some more time but damn does he need to show something in the games.

But the obvious difference between Alex Smith and Trey Lance in their respective year 3s is that by the start of them, Smith already had 23 starts...and Lance had 4.

Trying to draw comparisons between the 2 situations is silly. And even by year 4, Alex still had a large contingent of fans that were willing to give him a pass as a young developing QB. There are far less of them doing the same for Trey, in spite of it being far more reasonable to do after 4 starts compared to 23.

The game is not slowing down for Lance. The joke that is the OLine didnt help any of the QBS today though.
I think Lance may be ok if the game slows down for him, but it may never happen.

Lance mixed, inconsistent, need to make quicker decisions. Not all on him though. I saw one overthrow with 2 receivers in the same vicinity. Offensive line had some trouble handling the Raiders Dline.

I agree with a lot of this but there are other clear differences in their situation where Lance has the advantage, namely consistent coaching and fantastic players around him (not including today).

Lance had a full offseason catered to him being QB1 with those elements that Alex didn't even come close to having until 2011.

They were both developmental players. Can we learn this lesson at some point as an organization, lol.

Rich Eisen kinda called this out recently, talking to Florio. He mentioned 'fan comments' and said he doesn't get the 'sensitivity' (his quote) regarding fans with Lance. He was talking about how if you have a dif football opinion, other than him being a great fit here, why does that enflame so many ppl?

We aren't winning a superbowl with him this season
