Really? That seems very extreme to me. Lets see how Trey starts off the 1st half of the season before we start making assumptions about what Kyle thinks of Trey. Lets see how Kyle responds to Trey's first poor game, at least, before we start trying to draw any conclusions.

You don't keep Jimmy if you believe Trey is ready

Who says? Bill Walsh kept Steve Young on the roster for YEARS with Joe Montana. He even started Young in some games.

Don't give me some jack that "oh, it was a different era." That's BS. This sort of stuff happens all the time. It has nothing to do with Trey.

Steve Young wasn't the incumbent starter. This isn't like keeping Steve. This is like keeping Joe after naming Steve the starter

You do if you can't bring yourself to lose him for nothing.

I can see that but they need to make it clear Trey is starter. Still creates a mess for Trey. I can just hear the "we want Garoppolo" chants like the "We want Carr" chants

Like I said this how you ruin a young QB.

This. Which is why I don't think keeping Jimmy on the roster is a good idea.

Lance will struggle, multiple games this season, I'm guessing. And after each of these games, the question will be, "are you considering a QB change?". Kyle brought this upon himself.
If our 3 first round pick qb can't handle the pressure of sitting for one more year if he sucks then what does that say about the guy we traded the farm for.

Arod sat for a few years. I still believe in the kid but having a backup like JG is worth it. Why all the hate for jimmy? He's back on a 6.5M deal. This is great move if your a niner fan. Either the young gun kills it or the handsome one wins us no. 6.

I agree with this... I 100% understand it on a football level. Just think it will create chaos on game days. I am not looking forward to the "we want Jimmy" chants. I like Jimmy and always have but this is nuts

Bringing Jimmy back for 1 more year to mentor Trey on a team friendly contract is ideal to me and something I wanted from the beginning, but didn't think it was likely. We are built to win it all this year and Trey is the man to make it happen. Jimmy is selfless and will be a great mentor to Trey for another year. With that said, if Trey goes down, we have a very solid backup QB that can lead us to the promise land better then Sudfeld or Purdy could ever dream of.

I am not worried about the media and "fans" causing drama or a QB controversy when Trey has his struggles. I have full faith in Trey and I believe the team does too. Keeping Jimmy gives us the best backup QB in the game, while also keep the trade doors open for a potential suitor. Getting rid of Jimmy for nothing was never going to happen. We have a STRONG locker room that will not let things get out of hand.

All this move does is give us a better opportunity at 6! Let's gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Exactly right.

I guess at this point we can only hope that the restructure makes him tradeable to someone other than Seattle.

Please dont tell me that you think the chants were what "ruined" Alex Smith.

First of all, he was never ruined. He had a decent post 49er career so he wasnt ruined. Secondly, the comparison to this Alex Smith situation is absurd. Trey isnt a 6 year NFL veteran making rookie mistakes. That alone makes the comparison ridiculous.

I think the #1 thing we can count on is Shanahan not making a decision based on public opinion.

I'm not comparing the situation. Never said that the chants ruined Smith. I'm saying the chanting would be similar. Let's hope it never happens.

Let's hope Trey balls out and we never have to hear the fans call for Jimmy
