That's not awareness related. That's speed of the game and strength of NFL defenders related and that will come to him with more reps.
The game was fast for him last year but it's not about strength if you watch the play I'm talking about. It's really just bad awareness to not work toward the sideline or get down before getting hit by a defender that was tracking him for about 20 yds.
His last second dives to get down and lack of sliding really just shows that he needs to improve in this area. And it can definitely be speed of game related as you alluded to.

Which is why many of us believed that he needed reps last season.

It's about strength because he needs to understand he can't run over guys in the NFL he was able to at NDSU. He's got a safety coming down in on the play and while Mack was out blocking for him he wasn't exactly driving the defender out of the play completely. Trey may have no realized Hicks was there until making the decision to stay up the field but that could be speed related.
Looking back on it it's easy to say he should've gone to the outside but Mack could've easily drawn the holding call the way he was positioned and then they're in 1st and 30 instead of 2nd and 13.
Either way I wouldn't say it's an awareness issue. He's a QB. I'll gladly take less action from him when running the ball with most of his awareness being involved on pass plays.

Let's hope so. It's been long overdue since the 9ers last had a QB who had potential to be great. It sure would make up for those missed opportunities from 2017.

When I read solo man Thomas I thought he was talking about Ambry in one on one man coverage or something. Took me a sec.

Kyle was visibly upset with Trey on that play (if you guys are referring to the play that he got trucked by Reid). There was another play that in which stepped out of bounds a yard short on either 2nd or 3rd down. That was certainly lack of awareness.

He did get reps last season. Maybe not a full season worth like some of you wanted.
Also he did get to practice against one of the top defenses in the league, so he's gotten a good taste of NFL defenders speed.

We had two players in Alex (1st overall pick) and Kap (lit the nfl scene on fire) that had potential to be great that never fulfilled it. Hopefully Lance is finally the QB to live up to it.

Yea it's hard to make the right decision when everything is moving too fast. Whether he thinks he can truck these guys (he's pretty damn soft at the point of contact), thinks he can outrun them, or he's not processing fast enough, to me it all falls under the category of him not being aware of when to get down.

Some of those split second decisions just come down to innate ability and feel for the game. Some of it can get better with experience and some of it can't. We'll get a better understanding of Lance, with a larger sample size this year.

This stuff is great from a pure x's and o's/numbers game. I really do hope Trey learns to protect himself better though. But more than that, I really hope Shanahan does a better job protecting Trey. I like the idea of Trey's abilities in the run game being a threat more than I do it being an actual staple of the offense. I do understand that he is going to have to run to keep the threat alive. Perhaps have a sort of a pitch count for the season or per game.
One of things I love about Shanahan is the ability to add new wrinkles. I like the one idea that the guy in the video brought up with having a WR or RB out there waiting for a screen if the defender doesn't follow the motion. Another way I can see Shanahan protecting Trey is by turning those zone reads into play action/misdirection type plays. He could have Kittle fake a run block and sneak out to the side that Trey is running toward. Could have a reverse with Deebo or Danny Gray coming back the other way. Could be wrinkles I can't even imagine at this point. All I know is that at the very least this offense should be exciting to watch.
Trey definitely needs to work on his awareness. That play at the end of the video where the Texans DB runs him down and pops him should never happen. He should see that coming from a mile away. He rarely (if ever) slides, which shows he doesn't have a feel (yet) for when he needs to get down.
RG3 lacked that feel for the game, and it didn't end well.

I think that was a wrong read (play @ 7:11 of that video). The DE slow plays it and does not crash down, so the proper read is to hand it off. Had he handed it off (and Compton gets to his second level block) it's a big gain. At the time of the mesh point, no way Lance could have known that Compton doesn't get to his block, but the point is that the proper read is to hand it off. 3 box defenders on the weakside of the offensive formation with both Laken and Trent pulling.
----------
Then, this is the very next play (3rd & 1). I think Lance doesn't see the safety creep down into the box. So it's not enough to just read the DE. Lance has to take into account that the safety now has edge contain. This is again not a good read and probably the reason Kyle was not happy about that sequence of plays that led to a punt.
Maybe Lance did see the safety, and thought he could out run/out muscle him, but this isn't some FCS safety.
I've been a trey critic since prior to drafting him. I didn't think he was a qb, but an athlete playing thr qb position. I thought he was too raw and there wasn't enough snaps or game film to take a guy that high. I thought his play was worrisome last year, especially his running ability and his lack of touch. I still have my doubts about his ability to to throw TO a reciever than AT a reciever. I also doubt his ability to throw the 5 to 10 yard throws that are so critical for a qb.
With all that said, I've never doubted his drive, his maturity and his likeability. I'm super impressed how he's handled everything, from Jimmy to the media. I like how the team is rallying around him, I like what I'm hearing from old players and current players and the coaching staff. Now all that's left is for him to put ot together on gameday, and especially in a game winning moment. Thay prssure isnt something hes seen before. He just needs to tune out the media, his critics like me, and just perform. The pressure is on but it's nothing he didn't expect or ask for.

I still not sure how you've come to those conclusions....he absolutely has shown touch in college (and NFL). He has shown anticipation in his passing. What he was asked to do in college as a freshmen is the opposite of being "raw" compared to a lot of college QBs and what they're asked to do...he's "raw" regarding just live reps, which was out of his control with COVID.
His running ability is just fine. He's not Lamar, but not one who watched him in college objectively would call him that. He's been put in a great situation and all I want is improvement. The great thing is we saw that last yr in a small sample size.
IMO we have a good one....he just needs to rep through the bad stuff, like any very young player

Lance was much more comfortable checking the ball down than Fields was in college. He's also the best QB prospect i've seen in awhile in carrying out play fakes. And he surely has the most upside when it comes to sliding and escaping the pocket. Fields is a great downfield passer but he likes to run backwards to escape pressure unlike Lance who has shown the ability to slide up in the pocket,
There's a lot of nuance to his game that most don't understand because they look at box scores. I still stand by the fact that he was the correct choice. 49ers fans won't be disappointed in the next couple of seasons.
