How successful will depend on him and Shanahan. I think he has potential to be the top 3 QB in the league. So, even if you think he's the riskiest pick - IMO - potential is worth it

I think risk comes from him playing in FCS and only playing 1 year. I don't think that's a huge deal bc of what I say about his person. And, it wasn't like he was just sitting at home. He was working with private QB gurus and refining his mechanics. I actually think he needed that just as much as the game reps. I think it really helps the Niners that they don't have to make him unlearn things and then teach him. He already started that process last fall.

Lastly - 49ers already went all in when they made the trade - you don't do all that to play it safe and bunt or find the gap for a single. You swing for fences. You don't try to draft a QB with Kirk Cousins' ceiling - you try to draft one with top 3 QB ceiling.

This is why I said days ago that I didn't think we had inside us what it would take to do something like this. I thought the move was for one of Fields or Wilson dudes I thought were consensus top three picks but all things considered Lance was the best fit and it looks like I was wrong on Lance but I'm glad I was right on Mac Jones

Lol Adam Schefter said - There are no leaks from
the 49ers but he believes that the pick will be Mac Jones.

So clearly - he's guessing. He thinks it's a very educated guess but guess nonetheless.

I'm not sure why Lynch and Kyle both will cook up stories that Kyle was obsessed with Lance's film in late January? Kyle said it very clearly - they wanted to move up in Feb - and they eventually wanted to move up to 3 bc they felt if they traded to a lower spot - someone will jump to 3. He also felt the price will go higher - so better to make the move now. All of this makes sense.

It was Lance all along. Could they have changed their minds? Of course - if he turned out to be a know-it-all brat who doesn't sound like he wants to be coached - sure. But, they liked the person too and they were already gaga over his tape.

Lombardi and Simms right now

And Florio.

oh he's the king of the clown show....love if someone could photoshop Simms/Florio/Lombardi in a clown car hahaha

This is a great point.

There was also the report of meeting with his parents that leaked.

Did the 49ers call Lance just before the pick was announced, or was it after? I'd love to see a video that combines the backstage and front stage views into the actual timeline as events happened.

They call before. That's why they stopped showing that room before the picks are announced cuz it would always tip the pick if a guy was on the phone and smiling/crying.

When an idiot and an intelligent person say the Sun rises in the East, you agree with both "on that issue". I guess the idiot is not always wrong.

When the first two picks were obvious, and you have the 3rd pick, there is no reason to make a big deal out of that. I think Shanahan and Lynch wouldn't waste time on some tricks, etc. I think they were genuinely uncertain who they would pick, hence the hesitation to openly talk about it. Nothing wrong with that. Based on their presser two days before the draft, both were uneasy, it seemed like.
So some discussion, some convincing had to happen.
Anyways, who cares at this point, the draft is over, time to move on, and more importantly, win!
It would be a shame if Lance was a bust.

I think it's as easy as saying the top 3 QBs on their big board when they made the move were Lawrence/Wilson/Lance. After the move up they got to scout freely and the other two impressed them AND the original guy they moved up for (Lance) impressed even more...that's exactly what Shanny said the last presser before the draft. People just assumed that meant Jones because well they were forced fed b******t for a month.

DJ said right after that first pro day that the 49ers had multiple zoom meetings with him as well....it was all there but people couldn't see through the crap lol.

At this point, these idiot so-called sports analysts have to say something everyday in the off season so people continue to watch their show.
The draft is done, the 49ers selected Lance, just go out and win the whole thing (with Jimmy or Lance whoever the heck it is). Two SB losses in 7 years, it's time to win one.

Why?

Logically break it down to me why you believe that garbage?

lol what???

Who the 49ers were going to draft wasn't a scientific fact. Take that analogy and flush it down the same place where Mike Lombardi talks cuz all that comes out of that guy's mouth is sh*t.

The first pick was obvious. Zach Wilson is not Trevor Lawrence. There is also absolutely NOTHING to gain from the 49ers tipping their hand. In fact they explained why they even kept the pick under lock from their own scouts/coaches and even the owner until the very end.

Regardless of that you claimed you agreed with Lombardi. He didn't say "49ers traded up without a clear guy" He's making the claim they traded up and were going to draft Mac Jones until the fans said how much they hated the pick.

That's a load of garbage.

And they weren't uneasy during their press conference. They literally said they don't care about fan opinion, which actually led to more speculation that Mac Jones would be the pick. Kyle also once again brought up the fact that if he was going to draw it up he would get a guy who can throw from the pocket like Drew Brees and have the mobility of Lamar Jackson.

Not Trey Lance may not be that(not sure anyone is) but it sure as hell wasn't Mac Jones.

They moved up so they could get Trey Lance who they figured wouldn't make it to 12 due to his skillset and the heavy demand for QB ahead of them. They made the move early so they could shake every tree and see if there was a reason NOT to take Lance or to take one of the other QBs.

I made the analogy to Draft Day earlier...the GM in that movie moved up to #1 for Bo Callahan and then asked his guys to find out everything they could why he shouldn't be the pick - they found something to swing his decision.

We moved up for Lance and he did nothing but strengthen that decision.

Everything else is absurd speculation and people who refuse to look stupid for running their mouth with no real sources worth a damn.
Lol media trying to save face and some of you are buying into that garbage. Don't matter, believe who you want, speculate all you want, end of day all that matters is Trey is the one that got drafted and none of what anyone is saying now will change that. Period.

He's less fast than Kaepernick. Keep it in perspective. He's here to throw.

Who are these people???. They need 👁 implants. This dude is gonna be handing off to himself on 3d and short and the goal line.🤣. He'll call his protections then blast out on a boot and either hit a second or 3d window at 55 yards or just keep it and truck corners. Wish the Kap Shlit would stop. This dude's top end is faster than LJ's

I don't know. Kap's top speed was like a cheetah.

But Trey doesn't need to be the fastest QB. He just needs to be fast enough to scare defenses — and he is.

I hope to God he isn't like Kaep. I want a QB that can read defenses, go through his progressions, have some pocket awareness, anticipate a receiver getting open, and not just run to run, but do it when its truly the best option. Just saying. 😂

His tape shows he is miles ahead of Kap when it comes to reading defenses, going thru progressions, decision making etc

AGree, and I'll just add that Kyle is a much better QB developer than Harbaugh ever was. On top of that, his GM (Lynch) is a hell of a lot better than Baalke. Two OLine picks to protect Trey, and Two tough power running/zone skilled RB's for Trey to hand off to if he's having a bad QB day. Nice!

I have asked this question across multiple threads and it has never been answered.

What possible upside is there to keeping this pick so close to the vest? I would understand if we had the 5th pick, but the 3rd?

People keep talking about a smokescreen we started and I just dont understand why people believe that.

Lol he confirmed it was Lance and Jones as a backup. I'm curious what made Fields third, but oh well. Also how he mentioned Watson and Stafford, very interesting.

In many ways we got lucky. We paid the same for a 21 year old as Rams did for Stafford who's 33? I'd rather roll with the rookie in hopes Kyle develops him. obviously Watson is a mess so glad we didn't get blindsided by that.
