most people who are elite in any field make millions, especially entertainment. You have to be an absolute stud and physical freak to even make the NFL roster, let alone start. Besides all that, these guys sacrifice their bodies and have a significantly shortened life span just to play a decade in the NFL if they are lucky. They deserve every penny. It might be a "game," but the money they generate is real and the toll it takes is devastating. Look no further than Jr. Seau and recently Vincent Jackson.

if you have an amazing skill and are working on an assembly line for minimum wage, that's on you, but don't hate.

There are more NFL players who live long productive lives than ones who die early. You point out Seau and Jackson because it makes headlines. It is a game and they do get paid millions. They know the risks just as much or more so than fans. Simple, if they don't want to take the risks to their bodies they can choose to NOT play in the NFL and go into a career that they went to College for. The LB for the 49ers 2-3 years ago retired after 1-2 seasons, forget his name, but he had choices and made the one to stop playing football. I'm not going to feel sorry for one player whether they make it in the league 20+ years or 6 months. Ford could have walked away from football before he ever came to the 9ers and lived a very comfortable life but he choose to play for the money. He hasn't played very much for the $ that's for sure.

That settlement will go towards the CAP, it can be good or bad depending what they settle for

Agree with both. 49ers just have to make it worth Dee's agreement to get out from that 11 million guarantee. Again, 49ers can just cut him after that date if he doesn't play ball. I think Dee Ford and the 49ers can come to an agreement unless the relationship between 49er front office and Dee Ford has deteriorated to the point like that of Deshaoun and his front office.

Ford just has to understand that if he doesn't agree to a revised 49er contract, he'll be facing free agency immediately and with his injury history, I'm betting very few teams will be willing to give him a chance and with more that minimum vet salary this off season.

Great post. playing in the NFL is a privilege and shouldn't be treated as entitlement like social security.

Sigh Ford quality. If he was named Toyota this be a diffrent story.

jokes aside we almost won the Super Bowl with him. That alone would have made it worth it. Great player hope he finds some magical healing

You guys are high. It's not a privilege, like someone gave it to them. They earned it. They are special. Players put fans in the seats. Otherwise, we could easily start the WNFL, just like the WNBA.

Also, great players usually want to play well beyond reason. You are guessing that it's all about the money for Ford. Healthy, dude is a beast. When I was 25 or so, I thought I was invincible.

This. Some very simple minded answers in here.

The free market values players who produce. (And geniuses who produce) if you don't produce your value drops. Yes NFL players are *worth* every penny, but that worth is determined by market forces not by ethics or morals. The free market is brutal and merciless. If you think otherwise you are deluded.

Dee Ford, for what he has done in the past isn't *worth* 11 million, that's why there is ongoing negotiations. Saying it in another way, the 49ers (and many others) think Dee Ford has not *earned* the 11 million that he contractually wants to get paid for.
As soon as he signed that contract

Won't get over it until he's off the team.
It'd be one thing if he helped us in the Superbowl. But he was stoned all game and his defense gave up 21 points in 5 minutes. Like Chris Jones, we literally, just needed one play. Nope.

Good for Ford. Screw all NFL teams. Most of the time players are getting hosed. So the Niners are out 11.mm. Who gives a crap. They'll get over it. For Ford its life changing. This isn't a charity. The first chance a team gets to replace you for cheaper they will. Look at Montana, Rice and Brady. There is no loyalty in the NFL. Save your tears for things that really matter.

Isn't this the same reason some of you want to get rid of Jimmy G???

But its okay if Ford takes money while injured right.

Poor comparison. I want to get rid of Jimmy because he sucks. It has nothing to do with loyalty or his phantom injury.

Much much better than Krapernick.

If the salary cap is above the 185 million that's projected, then cutting Ford is doable. Also ford refusing to take a pay cut guarantees him to be cut after his physical, because there is going to be not much stopping the 49ers in his contract from cutting him *after* his physical.

But he is going to fail his physical. He is guaranteed 11+ million for injury. Its a mess which is explained very well here in this Athletic article. Paid publication so it may not pop open:
Potential savings if the 49ers cut Weston Richburg, Dee Ford – The Athletic (Edit yeah it won't post)

From the article: (Delete if not allowed)
(* Assuming $11.6 million injury guarantee is activated.)

In the event of a pre-June 1 cut, all $14.4 million of Ford's prorated signing bonus money that has yet to hit the cap plus the $11.6 million injury guarantee would flood the books. That'd total a staggering dead money hit of $25.9 million, which would actually make it $5.9 million more expensive for the 49ers to cut Ford than to keep him in 2021.

A post-June 1 cut would allow the 49ers to push $9.6 million of the prorated signing bonus cap hits back to the 2022 books, thereby reducing Ford's 2021 dead money charge to $16.4 million. But although the 49ers would save $3.7 million in this scenario, money they could utilize in a late-summer extension for linebacker Fred Warner, a $16.4 million dead cap is still massively inefficient.

A more creative solution might be needed if the 49ers want to lessen the financial damage to a more palatable level here.

The 49ers might consider again restructuring Ford's contract, this time to pay his injury-guaranteed money as a signing bonus instead of a regular Paragraph 5 base salary. That'd spread out the cap hit over numerous years instead of dumping it all on 2021.

By extension, it might be beneficial for the 49ers to keep Ford on their roster at the veteran league minimum of $1.075 million, even if their worst fears are realized and he's destined to be on injured reserve for all of 2021.

Not cutting Ford would push back potential dead money damage, since accelerations don't happen until an actual release does. If the 49ers wait until 2022 to cut Ford with a post-June 1 designation, they could stretch the dead money hit into 2023 — which is the deal's natural ending point anyway — and open up over $6 million in 2021 cap space.

That might make all of this easier to stomach for them.
